Taming of the Shrew, Last post, pd.1, Erin Campbell

May 22nd, 2009 — 11:12 pm

Act 4

Scene 1

On the way to the country house Kate and Petruchio run into some problems.  We hear the story from Grumio when he goes ahead of them to make sure that the servants are prepared for their arrival.  He tells them that during the journey Kate fell in some mud, Petruchio becomes furious and their horses ran away.  During the meal Petruchio continues his rage by claiming that nothing is done right.  First it takes to long for the food to come and then he decides that he meat is burnt at which point he throws the food on the floor.  When asked why he is acting in such way he responds by saying that Kate deserves nothing but the best, when in fact all she wants is food.  They then wind up going to bed without any dinner.  Next, when Petruchio is alone he informs the reader of his plans.  He is going to continue this behaviour throughout the night by complaining about how the bed is not to his liking.  His reasoning for doing this is because he thinks that it is the best way to calm her down and teach her to listen to him.

Act 4

Scene 2

This scene takes place back in Padua where the suitors are still trying to court Bianca.  She has clearly chosen Lucentio and Hortensio is highly upset by this.  Tranio, makes things very convincing when he walks in on Lucentio and Bianca during their lesson by acting enraged and therefore removes himself from trying to court her, which Hortensio follows his action.  This leaves Lucentio with Bianca and no competition.  At this point Hortensio leaves to go to Petruchio because he wants to see how he is dealing with Kate, because he plans to marry a widow.  He wants to use Petruchio’s skills to help himself in the future.  Next, Biondello comes in to inform them that he found a man to play Lucentio’s father.  He cleverly tricks him into doing this favor for him.  He tells the man that the dukes of Mantua and Padua are fighting and therefore anyone from Mantua found in Padua was to be put to death.  Biondello is “kind” enough to not turn him in if he does that favor for him.

Act 4

Scene 3

Several days have past and Kate has been deprived or food and sleep.  Eventually Petruchio and bring her a meal at which point a tailor arrives, to fit them for clothing on their journey back to Baptista’s.  Petruchio is not happy with anything that Kate likes and then blames the tailor for terrible craftsmanship, at which point they make him leave (yet they do inform him in private that he will still be paid).  Petruchio next decides that they will leave so that they would arrive their by noon, in the clothes that they already have on.  Kate tells him that noon has already past, so Petruchio freaks out telling her that they will arrive at the hour that he decides they will arrive.  Again, back at Baptista’s house Tranio has made sure that the man planned to play Lucentio’s father, Vincentio, has his stories straight.  Then he is brought to Baptista to state that he approves of the union of Bianca and his son.  They then continue to decide all of the financial details of the wedding.

Act 4

Scene 5

This scene takes place between Biondello and Lucentio.  Biondello tells Lucentio (still disguised as Cambio) that Baptista wants him to take Bianca to dinner and that they are planning a fast marriage to elope.  Lucentio agrees to the plan at which point they go their separate ways to put the plan into action.

On the journey back to Baptista’s Petruchio continues to try to tame her by claiming that the moon is shining, yet it is midday.  When Kate claims that is the sun, he refuses to continue until she says that is is the moon.  she says that it is the moon, so that they can continue.  He then changes his mind and claims that it is the sun at which  point he decides that she is tamed.  At this point they run into Vicentio.  When they seem him Petruchio again goes back to his same ways in claiming that the man is infact a maid and that Kate should give her a hug.  She obeys, which is when Petruchio says that Kate is mistaken and that he is in fact a man.   The man turns out to be the real Vincentio so Petruchio informs him of his son’s plans to marry.  This causes things to be a little awkward between everyone as they continue their journey to Baptista Minola’s house.

Act 5

Scene 1

This is the act where all the fake identities start to cause some major issues.  While Bianca and Lucentio rush to the church to get married the real Vincentio arrives where he runs into the imposter Vincentio and Biondello. The imposter tries to get the real one arrested while Biondello pretends not to recognize him.  At this point Baptista and Tranio come out of the house.  The real Vincentio also recognizes Trainio in his son’s clothing causing him to be even more furious.  The entire crowd then turns against the real Vincentio by trying to escort him to jail.  When the newly weds arrive they realize that their plan is out and therefore Tranio, Biondello and the pendant flee.  Then, Lucentio tells everyone about his scheme was revolved around his love for Bianca.  The two fathers are upset by this and because of this they seek revenge on the men that fooled them.  Watching all of these procedings are Kate and Petruchio who stand in amazement.  Petruchio then asks Kate to kiss him right in the middle of the street and at first Kate refuses, but she eventually gives in after he threatens her.  At this point Petruchio finally seems pleased with her.

Act 5

Scene 2

Everyone joins in at the end of the show for a banquet do to the three weddings.  The talk starts with some jokes about Hortensio which then continues to become worse and worse between the widow and Kate at which point Biance intervenes and calms them down.  They then leave to talk to eachother.  After they leave the men make a bet saying that however’s wife is obedient and comes first when asked wins.  Neither Bianca or the widow came right away, but Kate astonishes everyone and arrives right away.  She shocks even more when Petruchio states that he does not like her hat, so she gets rid of it.  To make things even more unbelievable she has this long monologue about women.  She states that she has realized that women should obey their husbands because they go through a lot of pain to make their lives wonderful.  She says that she was once like Bianca and the widow, but that something in Petruchio has made her realize her faults, and therefore she has changed.  The men then realize that they have been defeated and Petruchio wins the bet.  Petruchio and Kate then leave happily leaving the other two men in deep confusion

The Taming of the Shrew Pd.1 Summarizer/ww Post 2

May 15th, 2009 — 10:56 pm

Hey guys we did not get to talk about how much we are reading, but read through acts 2 and 3.  That way we will have two for the last post too.

Act II Scene I

A lot occurs during this scene.  It opens with the Katherine and Biance fighting about the suitors and which Bianca likes the most.  After this occurs we are brought to a tavern where all of the people disguised as others are introduced to Baptista.  They present their gifts to him in exchange to see Biance or Katharine.   After Baptista tells Petruchio that Kate comes with a hefty dowry he assures him that he will be able to woo and wed Katherine.  When the two finally meet they wind up in a pretty deep fight that goes back and forth between them with pretty quick and snippy remarks.  At this point their wedding is set to take place on Sunday.  After this the suitors of Bianca talk to Baptista to figure out who will have her hand in marriage.  He pretty much states that whoever has the most money is the one who will marry her, and for that reason she is going to marry Lucentio. Because of the sudden wedding plans forced upon Kate she is not sure how to respond so for some odd reason she just stops talking.  Yet, at the end of the scene she seems to comply with Petruchio.  In this act we truly see that up to this point Kate truly hates men.

Act III Scene I

This Scene is all about Bianca and her suitors trying to court her.  After a little bit she makes it quite clear that she prefers Lucentio to Hortensio.  She does this by deciding to have her latin lesson first, and by dismissing Hortensio on multiple occasions so she can talk longer.  At the very end of the scene Biance goes off to help prepare things for Kates wedding.  We also learn that Hortensio realizes that most likely he has lost his chance with Bianca, but he finds himself able to accept that fact.

Act III Scene II

The wedding day has finally arrived and Petruchio is late.  This causes Kate to become incredibly upset resulting in her running away in tears.  Biondello arrives to announce that Petruchio is in fact on his way.  When he finally does arrive he is dressed in a ridiculus outfit that embarrasses Baptista.  Baptista begs him to change but Petruchio does not listen.

Act III Scene III

The main idea of this scene is that Gremio returns to Tranio and Lucentio by telling them the terrible news of the wedding.  The whole thing was a complete disaster and no Petruchio claims that they have to leave at that moment.  This does not go through well with Kate because she wants to be congratulated by her friends and family, but still Petruchio insists.  Most of the guests just laugh at the pair and continue with the festivities.

Words to know

Questions

1.  What do you believe is Petruchio’s reasoning for dressing and acting so strange during the wedding?  Try to support your answer.

2.  Do you think that Baptista/Bianca will go through with the idea of her marrying Lucentio? Why?

3.  Do you believe it is right to marry because of money when it was the most common thing to do during the time or should it be different?  After defending one side, explain why the other view is true too.

4.  What do you think will become of Kate and Petruchio? Be specific.

Also I think I did a good job with this post.  It took a long time to do.

Pd.1 Taming of the Shrew Word Watcher/summarizer

May 8th, 2009 — 11:14 pm

Induction Scene 1:

The lord of a house finds Sly, a beggar asleep in front of a lords house, at which point the lord decides to play a trick on him.  He tries to convince him that he is actually a lord by dressing him up and everything.  Their reasoning for forgetting about his life is because he got sick and then lost his memory.  That night they decide to see a play.

Induction Scene 2:

Sly wakes up to find himself in the lords house being welcomed back from a long illness.  After some tales being told to him, he believes that he is infact a lord.  This part of the show opens the actual “Taming of the Shrew”.

Act 1 Scene 2:

The play opens to a scene in Padua where a man named Lucentio is entering.  We are also introduced to Signor Baptista (played by Seth in Kiss Me Kate haha) and his two daughters, Kate (My wifey, Katrina =]  ) and Bianca.  Bianca has two suitors wanting her hand in marriage, but the father, Baptista will not allow her to marry until after Katherine is married.  This is a problem because Kate is not the most friendly person, to say the least.  It is not believed that anyone will ever fall in love with her.  During Baptista’s problems Lucentio falls madly in love with Biance and he convinces to switch lives (for the time being) so he can be a tutor, and therefore be closer to her.

Act 1 Scene 2:

In this scene we meet Petruchio, a friend of Hortensio.  He tells him of his financial problems and says that no woman is bad enough, if she has money.  Because of this he agrees to (attempt) to woo Kate.  Hortensio too now is disguised as a music teacher for the Minolas.  So now we have three suitors for Bianca, Gremio, Hortensio, and Lucentio, and one man attempting to court Katherine,  Petruchio.  Keep in mind that this is the play that Sly is watching.

Words to Know:

headborough- constable or cop

Sirrah-  a term to address someone of lower status than you

quoth- said

trow- think deeply

pate- head

board her- to woo

sober- dark

woodcock- a species of bird that is thought to be foolish

1.  From what we have learned about the three suitors and Bianca, who do you believe that Bianca will choose? why?

2.  Do you think that Petruchio will follow through with his plans to marry Kate?  Why or why not?

3.  If you were Petruchio do you think marrying Kate for her money would be worth her aweful personality?

Anil’s Ghost Pd.3 Mallory Stickler

April 19th, 2009 — 02:27 pm

Yes, this is very late and I apologize. :)

IDK where you guys read from so I’m starting at 237.

They are in a lab in Arizona doing tests on Sailor. Oh and btw, I don’t think we should have picked this book because there are a lot of F bombs and dirty jokes in it. Mr. Shank would not approve. Then, the book goes into another one of it’s infamous flashbacks to Gamini and the first time he Cardiac Surgery on a little boy. Gamini then finds out that he is sitting at the same table as one of the nurses or poeple that operated on that little boy. She said she has visited him and the parents renamed the boy Gamini because he saved the boy’s life.

We find out that Gamini was married. At least I think he was. He was married to someone who was already married but her and Gamini had a wedding day and dance? He loved her and was there for her more than her real husband was. But, it didn’t seem like she loved him when she was dying. She swallowed lye and she died the next morning while Gamini was working in the hospital. We never find out her name, even though Anil asked about 3 times.

Next, Anil gets to talking about Leaf and how they met up in Mew Mexico. Anil finds out that Leaf has Alzheimer’s. She keeps forgetting things. Then Anil writes a letter to John Boorman asking if he remembers where the bullet entered and exited on Lee Marvin in the movie Point Blank. Mr. Marvin had gotten shot in Alcatraz and he escaped and swam across some straits in San Francisco.

Then there is more crap about Cullis that isn’t important so I’m not including it. Anil has to give her speech about Sailor. Sarath goes off for a few days to find out more about Sailor’s background. He doesn’t return and Anil gets pissed. She goes to Dr. Perera for help. She is talking to him in the cafeteria and Sailor’s skelton gets stolen by someone in a van. The day comes when Anil has to convince people that Sailor was killed by the government and Sarath shows up. He took all of her evidence and he told her to get away. She did not catch the bad guys and she did not convince anyone that Sailor was killed by the government.

Then Sarath took all of the research that Anil had gathered over the entire course of the book and he didn’t give it back to her. It was just to protect her but that was very harsh. She got in a van and he told her not to contact him. She got on the ship where the lab was. She got the skeleton that Sarath had given her after he made a fool out of her at the conference. She immediately recognized it as Sailor and there was a tape to listen to. It was Sarath. He told her that she had to finish her report on Sailor that night and there would be a plane for her to catch at 7 the next morning. She needed to erase the tape and not call him, because she is in great danger. The government knows that she is onto their killings and may be after her now.

Sarath dies and Gamini sees him dead in the hospital. I didn’t really get the last chapter of the book. I didn’t think it had anything to do with anything. Who’s Ananda?

toddy tapper-(n.) a person who makes an alcoholic beverage from that sap of various species of plam trees.

pneumonic-(adj.) of, pertaining to, or affecting the lungs

pieta-(n.) the ancient Roman personification of familial affection, patriotism, and piety.

paraphernalia-(n.) equipment, apparatus, or furnishing used in or necessary for a particular activity (I have heard of this word but didn’t really know what it meant)

corrugate-(v.) to draw or bend into folds or alternate furrows and ridges

I picked these words because I didn’t know what they meant. :)

Chapter 5:

In this chapter Nick is on his way home from a date with Jourdan when Gastby surprises him by coming up behind him. Gatsby starts offering Nick all of this stuff because he wants Nick to agree to his Daisy plan. (Inviting her over for tea.) Nick says yes and Gastby is overjoyed. The meeting ends up being very awkward at first, but after Nick leaves for a little while he comes back and finds them overly happy.

Chapter 6:

In this chapter reporters come to Gatsby’s mansion and Nick tells them the truth about Gatsby’s early life. Tom is suspicious about the fact that Daisy is always visiting Gasby alone. He invites Gatsby over for dinner and Gatsby agrees to go. Then, Tom and Daisy come to one of Gatsby’s parties and Gatsby is upset because he thinks that Daisy has not had a good time. He wants it to be like it was when they first met.

Chapter 7:

In this chapter Gatsby fires all his servents and stops having his parties. The only reason he had them in the first place was to attract Daisy to his house. His love for her is taking up all of his time and he can’t think about anything else. During an awkward lunch meeting at Tom and Daisy’s house in East Egg, Tom sees the way Gatsby gazes at Daisy and is sure that they love each other. There is a confrontation between Tom and Gatsby and Daisy ends up going back to Gatsby’s mansion with him. Tom is okay with this because he wants to prove it will not hurt him.

*Do you think this plan of Nick’s will work? Will Daisy and Gatsby end up together, or will she stay with Tom?

*As she watches the conflict between Gatsby and Tom Daisy is leaning a little towards being on Tom’s side. What does this show?

Words:

Contemptuous- This means to show or express contempt or disdain. I picked this word because I have always thought I knew what it meant but I was not sure.

Ineffable- This means unable to be expressed with words. I chose this because it looked interesting.

Ramifications- The act of ramifying. I picked this word because it looked interesting.

House of Sand and Fog Summarizer Final Post!

April 17th, 2009 — 06:30 pm

So, when Les takes Behrani and his son Esmail to go to the county office to turn the house back over to Kathy, Esmail gets shot by two police officers when they do not continue to move along the sidewalk to the building and Esmail turns Les’ gun on him. The two police officers at the scene think that it was Behrani that was the instegator. So, they arrest Behrani but take Les with them too because they know who he is. Les goes to the police station and they ask him to explain what happend, and he tells them the whole truth about imprisoning the family in their house and threatening them.

Behrani finally gets to go to the hospital to see his son to find out from the doctor that Esmail has died. Behrani is so upset, that when he arrives back at his house, he strangles Kathy in an attempt to kill her. Then he goes into his bedroom where his wife is laying, and strangles her too. He quickly writes a note to his daughter and places it on the refrigerator. His last act is to kill himself by suffocation.

Les goes to jail in Redwood City and is in Protective Custody. He misses his family and wonder what has happened to Kathy. Kathy wakes up to find herself in the hospital. A police officer comes in and tells her she is under arrest for Aggravated Kidnapping, False Imprisonment, and Brandishing a weapon. She has them call Connie Walsh for her since she cannot speak because of Behrani strangling her. Connie comes and tells her all that had happened to Les and the Behrani family. Kathy is then sent to jail.

I have one question, why would Kathy be charged on these accounts even though Les was the one who has committed these crimes?

So, I thought that we would brush up on legal terms for the last post of educational vocab words:

Booked-(v.) to enter an offical charge agaisnt a suspect on a police register.

Commissary-(n.) a term used for a deputy.

Protective Custody-(n.) detention of someone by the police as protection agaisnt a possible attack or reprisal by someone.

FTO- stands for ‘Field Training Officer.’

House of Sand and Fog Summarizer- Post 3

April 10th, 2009 — 01:20 pm

After Behrani takes Kathy into his home after her suicide attempt, his wife cares for Kathy and blames all of this happening to them on him. His wife leaves Kathy in the bathroom to take a shower before they all eat. After a period of time, they check to see if Kathy is okay and find her in the bathtub unconsious. Kathy has taken pills and this is her second suicide attempt.

Lester finally goes back to the camp to find Kathy missing. He drives around trying to find her, when he sees her car packed at Behrani’s house. He then breaks into the house. He take sout his gun and orders Behrani and his family to get away from Kathy. He takes Kathy into the bedroom and then calls the hospital. He is told that Kathy will be okay.

Behrani and his family are now prisoners in their own home by Lester. Lester locks them in the bathroom and they attempt to make the best of it in there. Lester orders Behrani that tomorrow, he is going to sell the house back to the county.

Kathy wakes up to find Lester in the house. He shows her the note he left her earlier and she is shocked that he has locked Behrani’s family in the bathroom. He lets them out after Behrani bangs on the door ordering that they have food. Behrani then makes the call to the office about the selling of the house back to the county. At the end of this third part, Lester has ordered Behrani and his son to come with him somewhere.

Words:

Heechee-nothing (in Farsi) Behrani keeps using this word as a put down on his family and himself. Saying that they have nothing and people should pity them because they have nothing.

Patronize-to behave in an offensively condenscending manner toward someone  I didn’t exactly remember what this word meant so I thought it would be a good refresher for people who know it and good for the people who don’t.

False imprisonment-when a person who is intentionally confined without legal authority  This I thought was a good word to define because this is a charge that Behrani could file agaisnt Lester, among others.

Inconsequential-of little or no importance  Another word I did not exactly remember the definiton for.

Great Gatsby Post 2 Summarizer

April 4th, 2009 — 10:16 am

Chapter 3:

By this chapter Gatsby has become quite famous in New York for his fabulous parties. He is known for hosting the fanciest parties and people practically beg to be invited. This chapter talks about one particular party that Gatsby is throwing. Gatsby invites Nick to this party and he attends although he feels awkward among the other guests. Jordan Baker is also there and she tells Nick what she knows, or thinks she knows, about Gatsby. Apparently he may have been a spy in the war and he once murdered somebody. As the party progresses people get drunk and the scene gets rather wild. Jordan and Nick meet Gatsby and the host meets with Jordan privately. When they are done meeting, Jordan is excited about the  extraordinary news she found out from Gatsby. At the end of the chapter Nick decides to date Jordan despite the fact that he feels she is a dishonest person.

Chapter 4:

In this chapter Nick and Gatsby go into the city to have lunch. On the way Gatsby reveals some of his mysterious past, telling Nick his life story. The story sounds fake; there’s something strange about it and it’s hard to believe. Gatsby lists all of his unbelievable accomplishments, such as collecting treasures in Europe, and going to school at Oxford. Gatsby sees that Nick is skeptical of these accomplishments so he proves that he shows him a medal and picture as proof. As the men reach the city Gatsby is speeding and is pulled over by a cop. Instead of getting a ticket he gets out a white card and the cop apologizes for the trouble. What is this card used for and why do you think Gatsby has it?

During lunch Gatsby introduces Nick to Meyer Wolfshiem, who apparently fixed the World Series. He is a shady, unethical man and Nick does not trust him. He also begins to get suspicious of how Gatsby came into wealth. After lunch Nick goes to see Jordan Baker and she tells him about her meeting with Gatsby. Gatsby told her that he is in love with Daisy and has been since before the war. Daisy was in love with him too but married Tom and stayed faithful through their marriage although Tom did not. Apparently Gatsby moved to his new mansion just to be near Daisy, because her house is across the water. The reason Gatsby met with Jordan was that he wanted her to convince Nick to arrange a meeting between Gatsby and Daisy. Gatsby thinks Daisy will refuse to see him so he wants Nick to have tea with Daisy allowing Gatsby the chance to show up and surprise her.

Words:

1. Prodigality- This is being so extravagent that it is wasteful. I chose this word because I thought it had something to do with being a prodigy but I wanted to find out for sure. I found out that although it looks like it means the act of being a prodigy or something to that extent, it doesn’t.

2.  Innuendo- A hint made about someone, often in a derogatory manner. It is describing how people are being introduced to eachother at Gatsby’s party. I picked this word just because it looked cool and I wanted to know what it meant.

3. Melancholy- This means depression. I chose this word because I always thought I knew what it meant but I wasn’t sure.

4. Ascertain- To find out for sure. In the book “Owl Eyes” makes the ascertian that the books in Gatsby’s library are indeed real. I chose this word because it looked interesting and it has a lot to do with the story.

5. Dissension- Strong disagreement, or a quarrel. I picked it because I was curious as to what it means.

Summarizer/Word Watcher House of Fog and Sand- Post 2

April 3rd, 2009 — 03:08 pm

Kathy and Lester move out into a cabin in the woods that is owned by a friend of Lester’s. Lester goes to Behrani’s house one night and poses as a cop that is questioning the owner of the house to try and scare them to give the house back to the county so Kathy can have her house back. After one day that Lester goes to his wife to settle things with her, he has yet to come back to the cabin. Once again, Kathy has been left by someone. She leaves the cabin and decides to go and talk to Behrani’s wife when he is not home. She talks to his wife and she is compassionate about Kathy’s situation.

Behrani goes to a lawyer and they tell him that there is nothing that Kathy can do to get her house back. He continues to work on selling the house and goes to the police station to ask about the cop who came to his house the one night. When he comes home, he finds his wife talking to Kathy. He approaches them and grabs Kathy by the shoulders, causing bruises to develope on his arms later. He tell her to never come back to this house again and tells her he knows about how she had a friend come and pose as a cop.

Kathy leaves and drives around thinking. She starts drinking a lot again which was her addiction before the story began. She finally can’t take all her problems anymore so she finds Lester’s gun that he left in her car, and she tries to shoot herself.

Behrani comes out of the house to see Kathy’s car parked there. So, he goes over to it and opens the door. He finds Kathy crying and trying to shoot herself but it is not working because the safety feature is in place. Behrani takes the gun out of her hands and leads her into his house. He takes her into his sons bedroom and leaves her there to sleep. Behrani now feels pity and compassion for Kathy and her problems.

The words I chose this week are the, a, an, is, and of because they are key to every sentence structure!

Just kidding! :D

So, the actual words are:

bungalow- a small house with only one story. This is important because Behrani calls the house a bungalow with is also a term from where he comes from for a type of housing.

virgin drink- a beverage that does not have achohol in it as it usually does. This is significant because Kathy goes to different places to drink because she is depressed and after a while, she should have order drinks without the achohol in them, but doesn’t.
