Much Ado About Nothing: Summarizer: Leah Sevco: LAST BLOG!

May 22nd, 2009 — 11:21 pm

LAST BLOG EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations class, we did it.

 ct Four: Scene 1
Everyone is gathered at the church for Claudio and Hero’s wedding. Claudio tells Friar that he is not going to marry Hero. Don Pedro also joins in on Claudio’s side, saying that he saw Hero hug another man the night before. Hero faints, and Don John, Don Pedro and Claudio all leave. Beatrice tries to help her, but Leonato, believing the men, says that Hero should die for what she did. The Friar then tells everyone to stop, saying that he thinks that Hero is actually innocent by the way that she had reacted.
QUESTION: What was your first reaction to hearing the idea that Hero wasn’t going to marry Claudio?
When Hero had awakened, she said that she was not with a man. Leonato said that if she was lying he would hurt her, vice versa to Claudio and Don Pedro. The Friar told Leonato to pretend that Hero was dead and that she died out of shame, so that people would honor her and feel bad, especially Claudio. Benedick said he would keep this a secret.
Soon later after everyone leaves the scene, Benedick and Beatrice confess their love for each other. Benedick tells Beatrice to make him do something to prove it. She told him to kill Claudio. At first he declined, saying he would never do that, but Beatrice then accused him of not loving her. Therefore, Benedick said he would challenge Claudio.
QUESTION: Could you believe that their plan worked!?  I never thought it would…

Act Four: Scene 2
Dogberry had taken Borachio and Conrad to the Town Clerk and is interrogating them. The Sexton takes charge and orders the watchman who arrested them to step forward. He says that he had overheard the two discussing the plot against Hero’s reputation. The sexton says that they cannot deny it. He then tells the two that Claudio had accused Hero for this at the wedding and she had died out of humiliation. The men were then ordered to be taken to Leonato.

Act Five: Scene 1

Antonio is trying to comfort Leonato. Leonato says that he will make the men suffer. Claudio and Don Pedro arrive, and Leonato challenges Claudio to a fight. Antonio joins on Leonato’s side. Don Pedro refuses to fight. Antonio and Leonato leave, angry. Benedick then arrives. He challenges Claudio, but they think it is a joke. Benedick tells them that Don John has left Messina, and tells Claudio that they will meet later to fight.
Dogberry and Verges come in to the scene, and this reminds Don Pedro that Don John had left. Don Pedro goes up to the prisoners and asks them why they had been arrested. Borachio tells him the whole story. Leonato then arrives with the Sexton, who has told Leonato of what happened. Furiously Leonato accuses Borachio, Don Pedro and Claudio of killing his daughter. Claudio and Don John try to plead innocent, but they remember that they have mistaken Hero for cheating too. They say that they will tell the whole city of Hero’s innocence. Claudio further promises to marry Leonato’s niece, whom he tells Claudio is his sole heir. Leonato then asks what Margaret’s role in the scheme was. They say she was innocent, but they are going to ask Margaret anyway.
QHESTION: What do you think Margaret would have said if you asked her what had happened?

Act Five: Scene Two

Benedick had written a poem with Margaret for Beatrice. He then tells Margaret to go get Beatrice. Beatrice comes and they talk about love. Soon after Ursula comes in and tells them to come quickly because they proved that Hero was wrongly accused.

Act Five: Scene Three

A bunch of the men go to visit Hero’s gravestone. Soon Don Pedro leaves, taking Claudio with him to Leonato’s house.

Act Five: Scene Four

Leonato sends the woman into their chambers and orders them to come out masked when they are called for. Antonio said he would pretend that Hero is his daughter so Claudio will believe he is marrying Hero’s cousin. Benedick asks Leonato if he could marry Beatrice at the same wedding ceremony. Leonato says yes. Claudio and Don Pedro then come, as the women come out wearing masks. Claudio asks who he should marry, and Antonio gives him Hero. She unmasks herself for Claudio to see.
At the wedding Benedick asks Beatrice if she loves him, and she responded with, “Why no, no more than reason” (5.4.74). Soon they then realize that everybody has been setting them up. Claudio and Hero watch this take place, and Claudio gives Benedick sonnets that he and Beatrice wrote so they could prove they loved each other. Benedick and Claudio reconcile their friendship and tell Don Pedro to find himself a wife so he is not alone. A messenger arrives at the very end and informs them that Don John has been captured and brought back to Messina.
QUESTIONL: Will Claudio and Hero ever get married, do you think.

Let me know if you need any words cleared up!

WE’RE DONE GUYS!

How did you guys like the book… it didnt turn out to be too bad….

Also yes, my fonts had gotten mixed up editing this. Sorry!

Much Ado About Nothing: Summarizer: Leah Sevco

Act Three, Scene One
Hero tells Margaret to get Beatrice, and tells her that she overheard Ursula and Beatrice gossiping in the orchard. Hero then tells Ursula to talk Benedick, pretending that he was madly in love with Beatrice. They make this plan, and then wait for Beatrice to hide in the orchard to go to the hiding spot. Once they are there, Hero says that Benedick is madly in love with Beatrice, but she would never tell Beatrice that because Benedick would just get turned down. The ladies continue saying things along these lines, including the statement that Benedick is a fine man and would be a great match for Beatrice. After they leave, Benedick says that she will plan on marrying Benedick.
Do you think it is a bad idea to bring these two together (Beatrice and Benedick) by lying? I think that it may not be the best idea, because Beatrice and Benedick really did not have the exact feelings for each other that they are saying they do.

Act Three, Scene Two
Benedick is noticably been sad, and Claudio, Don Pedro and Leonato have taken notice. They tease him, and Benedick asks Leonato if he could speak to him in private. Don Pedro and Claudio are quick to accuse him of wanting to talk about Beatrice.
Don John then comes in the scene, and tells Claudio and Don Pedro that Hero is unfaithful. He says he will show them that he is not lying, telling them to go with him to look in her window that night. Claudio says if he sees anything, he will shame her before the wedding. Then all agree then to meet Don John that night.
Why do you think Don John is so obsessed with ruining the marriage? Also before you read the outcome, did you think Claudio and Don Pedro would believe what they saw in Hero’s window?

Act Three, Scene Three
Dogberry and Verges assign a watchmen for the night. They tell the watchman what to do to guard, and Dogberry says to only wake him up if something important happens. Soon later, Borachio and Conrad come up and accidently stand within hearing distance of the watchman. Borachio tells Conrad that he earned a thousand ducats from Don John that night because he wooed Margaret in Hero’s room and called her Hero. Meanwhile, Don John had brought Don Pedro and Claudio to orchard where they watched this whole scene, being convinced that Hero has another lover. One of the watchmen then arrests Borachio and Conrad for villainy. They are then taken to be interrogated.
What do you guys think Borachio and Conrad will say when they are interrogated about their villainy? They must not have been too smart and not careful enough to talk in hearing-distance of the watchman.

Act Three, Scene Four
Margaret is helping Hero get ready for her wedding. She then sends Ursula to get Beatrice, who has come down with some sort of sickness. Margaret then tells Beatrice that Benedick is in love. She then says that maybe someday Beatrice will come to love him too. Ursula then tells Hero that the men are there to take her to the church.
Are the men totally fine with Hero now? Aren’t the men who saw Hero in her window going to say anything about it?

Act Three, Scene Five

Dogberry had told Leonato that two men were arrested the previous night. He asks Leonato to interrogate the men, but Leonato rejects the offer because the wedding is that day, and tells Dogberry to do it himself. Dogberry tells Verges to get one of the men who can write to examine the two men, so he can write everything down and give it to Leonato.
Do you think that this examination will help or ruin the marriage? Will the interrogation be a good thing or a bad thing for the marriage? And how do you think Leonato will react?

Just let me know if you need any help with vocabulary or words, or figuring out what something means.

Much Ado About Nothing: Leah Sevco: Summarizer

May 9th, 2009 — 08:41 am

Blog 1 guys! On MAY 9th. . .

Act One, Scene 1
To start the scene; a messenger arrives in Messina to tell the governor, Leonato, that Don Pedro and his army are coming to town. His daughter, Beatrice, asks about someone named Benedick, and then mocks him and says nasty things about him.
Later, Don Pedro arrives with a few of his partners, Claudio, Benedick, Balthasar, and Don John. The Two speak, meanwhile Beatrice and Benedick argue. Don Pedro then says that Leonardo has offered to them to stay at his place for a month.
Meanwhile, after everyone has left room, Claudio and Benedick talk about Leonardo’s other daughter, Hero. It is obvious that Claudio has some feelings for her. Don Pedro comes into the room and hears this. He agrees they would make a good couple. He tells Claudio that there is going to be a masked ball that night, and that he will pretend he is Claudio and tell Hero he loves her, because Claudio is too afraid to do it himself.

Act One, Scene Two
Antonio, Leonardo’s older brother, tells Leonardo that one of his servants had overheard Don Pedro and Claudio talking in the peach orchard and heard that Claudio loves Hero. He also hears his plans for the night at the masked ball. Leonardo is excited about this, and only tells Hero so she can prepare an answer for Claudio (Don Pedro disguised as him).

Act One, Scene Three

Conrad, another one of Don Pedro’s, had noticed Don John being particularly sad. He asks him why and he says he likes the way he is, and he is not going to change just because he is reconciled with Don Pedro.
Borachio tells Don John that he had also overheard Don Pedro and Claudio talking in the orchard. This seems to anger Don John, and he tells them to help him think of a plan to make Claudio’s plans fail.

Act Two, Scene One
They all sit down to dinner, except for Don John. Hero says that he is sad, and Beatrice makes a mean remark about him. Leonardo orders Hero to say yes to the prince if he were to offer her something. Beatrice again makes another comment.
Soon later, Don Pedro and the others arrive all wearing masks. As soon as they get there, Don Pedro asks Hero to dance. Some of the other men also meet up with ladies and start dancing. Don John and Borachio come up to Claudio and ask him if he is Benedick, even though they know he is Claudio. Don John says that they should break up Don Pedro and Hero. Borachio then says that he had overheard Don Pedro talking and his plans of marrying Hero that night.
When Claudio is alone again Benedick comes up to him and tells him that he is sorry for having Don Pedro steal Hero. Depressed, Claudio agrees. Then Don Pedro comes up and Benedick yells at him and accuses him of stealing her. Don Pedro, confused, says that he was just doing what he said he was going to do to help the two.
Benedick, still unhappy of what Beatrice had said to him, tries to tell Don Pedro this. Then Beatrice, Hero, Leonardo and Claudio arrive, and Benedick scatters.
Don Pedro had told Claudio that their plan had worked and that they are able to get married now (meaning Claudio and Hero). Neither Claudio nor Hero could speak at the thought of this because they were in such shock (this is a good thing).
Beatrice then gets angry and leaves after Leonardo has sent her away, after she realizes that everyone is getting married except for her. The wedding is to be planned for a week from now. They also decide that they are going to try to make Benedick and Beatrice fall in love.

Act Two, Scene Two
Don John is furious that Claudio and Hero are going to get married. Borachio says that he is a good friend with a servant of Hero’s, and he can try to ruin their marriage. Don John says that he will meet her servant in Hero’s room and at the same time tell Claudio and Don Pedro to watch into Hero’s window. That way they will both think Hero has another lover.

Act Two, Scene Three
Benedick was thinking in the garden and sees Don Pedro and Claudio coming. He hides so he can overhear them. Don Pedro knows that Benedick had hid, and asks Claudio and Leonardo if they knew where. Don Pedro then purposely asks if Beatrice is in love with Benedick. Leonardo says it is hard to say that knowing the way that she treats him. They then continue to say thinks that suggest Beatrice loves Benedick, and Benedick then believes it thinking it has to be true. Claudio says that he thinks Beatrice would die before she confessed her love.
The men then leave and decide that the women need to do the same to Beatrice. Beatrice then later invites Benedick to dinner, without knowing any of this. It is so hard for Benedick to be nice to Beatrice due to her manner.

Wooooooof.

All-In: Last Post: Summarizer: Leah Sevco

April 18th, 2009 — 03:30 pm

I AM EXTREMELY ANGERED! WE DID NOT FIND OUT HOW THE FINAL TOURNAMENT ENDED!

All we found out was that the final two were Artie and Denn. But oh my, I am really angry that we did not find out who won the million dollars.

Anyway, All-In was a great book, and I’m glad Mr. Shank let us read it!

Now for my chapter summaries:

Chapter 32 [Cattie]:

Cattie heard a knocking on her door when she was in her bathtub. When she got out and got dressed (getting ready to go to the big tournament and deal) she found Denn sitting opposite of her apartment door. She was confused and somewhat annoyed to see him. All he stated was that he wanted to make sure she was okay.

Chapter 33 [Denn]:

Denn sat there in the hallway thinking for awhile. When he took a look outside he found Cattie sitting on her car smoking. He went out to her, and restarted regular conversation. Cattie asked him if was playing in the tournament. He responded no, due to the fact he has no money. Then she asked Denn if he would play if he had the money. Then she ran up to her room to get him $10,000.

Questions: Do you think Denn was really looking for Cattie to give him money?

Chapter 34 [Jimbo]:

The chapter is narrated by Jimbo, and he says they are walking around the poker room waiting for the big tournament to begin. Tons of big-time poker players are there. Jimbo spots Denn and goes to wish him good luck, and asks Denn if he plans to win. Of course, Denn says that that is his intension.

Question: At this point, did you think that Jimbo was possibly trying to get money from Denn, too?

Chapter 35 [Denn]:

The chapter starts out with Denn realizing his surroundings, he is tired, hungry, and has one of the biggest poker games of his life ahead of him. He wondered if he was being fooled by Artie and Cattie again. He didn’t think so. He wanted to take his chances. He proceeded to ask Cattie why she had given him that $10,000. Did she want him to play?  After their conversation, Denn went to find his seat in the poker room. The chapter ends with Artie announcing talking to the crowd about the tournament, and the tournament beginning.

Do you guys think it is suspicious that Artie is playing in his own tournament?

Chapter 36 [Denn]:

The tournament started, and the blind bets started at $10-$20 and would increase every hour. At the first break, Denn and Jimbo talked some more. Jimbo said some UNLV kid had been tearing up the tournament. The games continued and more and more people began to leave. Denn’s focus came and went. Then Cattie came to deal at his table.

Chapter 37 [Cattie]:

Cattie seemed to deal Artie pocket aces every round to anger Artie. At the break Morty scolded Cattie and told her to not make the cheating so obvious.

Chapter 38 [Jimbo]:

Jimbo tells one of his ‘bad-beat stories’, dealing with the UNLV kid. The story was actually from the very tournament. The UNLV beat Jimbo in a tough round, knocking Jimbo out of the tournament.

Chapter 39 [Denn]:

Denn had been winning some small pots, and the blinds kept increasing. He got into a long battle with the UNLV kid, and at the end Denn one sending the UNLV kid crying out the door.

What do you guys think of this kid? Weird?

Chapter 40 [Cattie]:

There has already been suspense and knowledge in the previous chapters that Cattie will cheat and help Artie win. Also in previous chapters, Artie got unhappy with Cattie because she dealt him 2 aces 5 times in a row, which become somewhat suspicious. So in this chapter the big poker tournament continues, and Cattie, one of the dealers, had rotated to Artie’s table. She hadn’t dealt to Artie’s liking, so he sent Morty over to tell Cattie that she was done dealing for the night. Morty warned her to leave so Artie couldn’t find her.

Questions: Why do you think Artie wanted to get rid of Cattie if she was his only chance at cheating to win? Did he figure that he would just wing it, or were there other dealers cheating for him too?

Chapter 41 [Denn]:

It was about 2 a.m. and the tournament was down to two tables. The UNLV kid that had been a hit and was crushing in the tournament had gotten knocked out by Artie. A break in the playing was called, and Denn walked over to Cattie who was sitting in a chair in the distance where she was watching the action.

When the action continued, it was down to the final ten (one table). They had a new dealer, Ree, whom which Denn determined wasn’t cheating for Artie. A bunch of people were knocked out within not much time. It was soon the final three, Artie, Sammy Gold, and Denn. Artie still played trickily, without cheating. Finally, a hand was dealt where Denn had beaten and knocked out Sammy Gold. The game was then left to Artie and Denn.

Chapter 42 [Denn]:

Denn noticed that Cattie had left the room and was no longer watching. Denn took a break, and when he reentered the room it was time to play again, just Denn and Artie. Ree was dealing. Denn and Artie had gone back and forth, until Artie had gotten a really good hand and made Denn go all-in. Unfortunately, Denn lost, leaving him with one measly $1000 chip. Neither of the players realized that it was still there. They both thought that Artie had won after the last play. This was a shock, but then later everyone encouraged Denn to play. To do this with the extremely high blind bet, Denn would have to go all-in for a couple of rounds until he got more chips. The book ended with the dealer dealing the two their cards, and Denn betting with the quotation, “All-in,” and a smile.

AND NOT TELLING US WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE REST OF THE TOURNAMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Questions: Do you guys think that Denn would have won the tournament? Why so, or how so?

Did you guys like the story? I think it was the best book that we have blogged about so far!

Also there were still no words that really stood out to me. Tell me if you need anything clarified!

blind = blind bet, short term

All-In: Summarizer: Blog FOR LAST WEEK: Leah Sevco

April 15th, 2009 — 09:41 pm

Sorry again, everyone, for not having my book last week and not blogging. Also, thanks for responding to me now. :)

Chapter 20 [Denn]:
The scene began with Denn sitting at a table in the Bellagio, playing a wimpy $6-$12 game. Cattie kept crossing his mind, causing him to lose his focus. The game got somewhat intense when the Hispanic woman and the man with the Twins cap started to play smart. Noticing that he was going to lose, Denn decided to fold and walk out.

Chapter 21 [Cattie]:
During this chapter Cattie reflects upon her mother and all of her mothers’ horrible and disgusting habbits. She explains how her father had left her and her mother. She also goes on into detail about her mother, saying that she has about 3-4 new boyfriends every week. She also says that her mother is a gold digger. Do you think that this could be how Cattie ends up? Lastly, the chapter ends showing that while Cattie was reflecting about her mother, she was out to dinner with the grey haired man.

Chapter 22 [Denn]:
Denn had come to King’s Crossing to look for Cattie. He had asked the man at the bar, Harley, but he said he had never heard of Cattie. Frustrated and not wanting to talk to the man anymore, Denn sits down at a $15-$30 holdem seat.

Chapter 23 [Cattie]:
Cattie had realized the idea that the grey haired man most likely only wanted Cattie to mess with Denn, and possibly to mess around with sexually. Creepily, the grey haired man tries to convince Cattie into coming back to his house. She declines multiple times. The man then gets a phone call, and takes Cattie and himself to King’s Crossing. Cattie tries to leave, but he insists that she stay. Why did you think that he wanted Cattie to stay? What all do you think the man wants from Cattie? Also, what do you think the man meant when he asked Cattie if she was “cold”, since he said he wasn’t talking about the weather?

Chapter 24 [Denn]:
Denn continued playing his $15-$30 game when he spotted Cattie out of the corner of his eye. He noticed that she was with a grey haired man, and he followed the two into the lounge. When he walked up to the table, he found Cattie there, and discovered that the grey haired man had been Artie Kingston, the man he has won the resturant from. After you guys had read this part, what did you think about this whole situation (do you think the phone call was from someone that was spying on Denn?)

Chapter 25 [Cattie]:
Cattie had sat back in her chair while watching Denn and Artie converse. She could see how Artie was mocking Denn and how Denn was taking it. She started to stand up, but again Artie grabbed her and stopped her. When she finally got free she grabbed her purse and stormed away. Why do you think she removed herself from the situation so quickly?

Chapter 26 [Denn]:
Denn continues to talk to Artie in this chapter. Artie says that he knows that Cattie likes Denn. Denn likes this. Yet Artie continues to shoot Denn down with puns, and he informs Denn of all his victories and reminds Denn of all his failures. Artie tells Denn that he is too easy, and that he can’t be in love and play poker. He also confesses that he is the one behind all of Denn’s losings. Why do you think Artie wanted to get back at Denn? I think that Artie is a very suspicious character.

Chapter 27 [Jimbo]:
Here Jimbo, our narrator, tells us that when you’re in the poker business you should be careful picking your friends. He also tells us stories of how he lent money to some of his friends, but only reasonably. Denn had approached him and made small talk, leading up to the question if Jimbo would lend him some money. Jimbo shamefully declined, and Denn could tell that Jimbo was lying when he said he didn’t have the money. Why didn’t Jimbo want to help Denn out?

Chapter 28 [Cattie]:
Here Cattie thinks about her mother again. Could this signify something? She also was thinking about Denn a lot. She commented on her lazy lifestyle, with an ‘i hate myself’ tone.

Chapter 29 [Denn]:
Denn was in the Mirage, walking around, thinking. He had stopped by and watched a few games. He came across one that had a beefy man playing intensly. The man had overall won more than $50,000, and the game wasn’t over. After a while of watching, Denn laid down his wad of cash and joined the game. Do you think this was a good idea of Denn’s? Or could this be another mistake he is being sucked into by Artie?

Truthfully I really had not found any words that we haven’t came across before, and all of the poker terms have been defined. Let me know if you need anything clarified!

Thanks again guys for cooperating with me and blogging now!

Chapter Summaries
Chapter 10 [Cattie]:   Cattie had gon shopping for jewelry. She said that she loved going jewelry shopping in Las Vegas. She had tried on multiple items, but told the clerk that she would be back with her husband later, which was a lie. When she had gone out to her car, she had looked in the review mirror and surveyed how the ruby earrings she stole looked on her. Deciding she didn’t like them, she yelled to a random man and told him to give them to his girlfriend. Her phone then started to buzz… it was Denn. Cattie just wants him to give up.
The chapter then goes into a flashback from Denn and Cattie’s first date. On this date, Cattie had taken Denn to an amusement park, where she taken Denn on one of the most dangerous and thrilly rides there. Denn seems to remain to like Cattie, and wants to do whatever she wants.
Questions: Why do you think Cattie had taken him on that ride without letting him know? Did she want to make him ‘wet himself’? Haha.
Statements: I believe that it is in these chapters where we learn more aboutthe relationshop that Cattie and Denn had and how close they actually were.

Chapter 11 [Denn]:   The chapter starts off with a few sad lines explaining Denn’s depression. The scene then turns to a flashback of Denn playing cards at the Bellagio. All he could think of durring this time was Cattie. Denn was playing back and forth really tight and risky with Sammy. Denn got so caught up with his thoughts that he did anything to impress Cattie, even though she wasn’t there. That resulted in Denn losing a big pot- more than $80,000.
Then the chapter proceeds to tell about the following nights. Denn says that he hangs out with Cattie a lot. At nights Cattie worked as a dealer, while Denn played poker. Denn’s necklace is also focused on in the chapter. Cattie says that she think Denn touches the gold necklace whenever he is worried, except for at the card table. Confused about why he is wearing the necklace anyway, Denn takes it off and gives it to Cattie. After this day, Denn goes to play at the Sand Dunes, where he first meets Morty and Frisk.
Questions:  Why did Denn wear the gold necklace, anyway?
Statements: I think this is where the reader can begin to tell that Cattie had helped the men set up Denn.

Chapter 12 [Jimbo]:    This chapter explains another event of Jimbo’s. Here, Denn calls Jimbo, and Jimbo pretends like it’s not him for a short while. Jimbo then asks for the status on him and Cattie. Jimbo then asks Denn if he wants to join the ‘Big Deal’, which is going to be a huge game of poker with a gigantic pot. Denn answers with a maybe.
Questions:  Do you guys think that Jimbo could also be a part of this scam with Denn?
And I may just be forgetting, but how are Denn and Jimbo so tight?
Statements:  I think that Jimbo may secretly be a part of the same scam that Cattie is involved with. It will be a total shock to the speaker, because so far Jimbo has been a seemly good and unsuspicious character.

Chapter 13 [Cattie]:   This is a revealing chapter. Cattie had gone to King’s Crossing, which was a newly opened casino. The poker room was enormous. There she seems Morty Deasel. Cattie thought to herself, “Denn Doyle had no place in a world infested with the likes of Morty Deasel and Cattie Hart” (66). She then thought about how she somewhat actually liked and had feelings for Denn. She then admits that she had a scam and was cheated Denn out. She calls him “just another mark”. “Guilt is for suckers” (67).
Questions:  Why did the author reveal that Cattie really was pulling a prank so early in the story? Since we’re only half way through the book, what other kinds of scandal do you guys think Cattie, Morty and the rest of the crew will do?
Statements: Cattie said that she had “never meant to get that far” with Denn. I think that Cattie really likes Denn, and that she is going to have trouble pulling this off.

Chapter 14 [Denn]:  Denn had gone to Lousy Lou’s, another casino. There, he had bought his chips from a creepy bartender, and proceeded to the back room to play a game of one-to-four stud. The bartender says, “Don’t say i didn’t warn you” (70). When Denn walked into the room, he found a table full of old men and two women. The elders thought that Denn didn’t like them and that he was hiding when he took out the traditional ipod and shades. They told Denn that they don’t wear cheaters. Most of the male players keep commenting one kids and how Denn reminds them of them. In a way they make fun of Denn. They game became tricky, and the game broke up leaving Denn only $22 down.
Questions:  These old people seem stealthy. Do you guys think they have any part in the Denn-Scandal?
Statements:  These men and women seem pretty scary and creepy to me. How about you guys?

Chapter 15 [Denn]: Denn drives back to his appartment, thinking of his wins and regrets. He noticed how his appartment was empty, and he barely had any food. He then decided that he was going to try to get the money to ender in the tournament that Jimbo had mentioned.
Questions:  Do you guys think this is smart for Denn to do?

Chapter 16 [Cattie]:  The reader hears of a man named Jerry, who supposedly worked with Cattie before, cheating and making big bucks. Some other man then appears. The man seems to hit on Cattie, but she declines bitterly. He then warned her that security was surrounding Jerry.
The scene then turns to a flashback. It says that the man had been the one that had taken Cattie to the Sand Dunes, pointed out Denn, and asked Cattie if she think she could fall in love with him. This proves that there was some planning and scanning going on.
The scene then became present again, and the man had asked Cattie to be his personal assistant.
Questions:  Who is this man? And how does he know Denn? And why do you guys think he wants to cheat Denn out? Lastly, how does this man know Cattie?
Statements:  I think that possibly this man is trying to cheat Denn because he is jealous of him.

Chapter 17 [Denn]:  Denn returned to Lousy Lou’s to win some more money. Most of the players didn’t remember him from the previous day, but remembered after they were reminded. They started playing cards, and Denn was doing exceptionally well. The men comment that if they were Denn’s age, they wouldn’t be playing poker, and they’d be out chasing girls. At the end of the chapter, Marge smiles sweetly at Denn and says, “Let him be, Moses. Can’t you see he has a broken heart?” (84).
Questions:  How do you think Marge could tell that Denn had a broken heart?
Statements:  I think that everyone is somewhat hinting to Denn that he shouldn’t be playing poker at such a young age. Maybe the author is trying to teach teens a lesson.

Chapter 18 [Denn]:  Denn had begin to learn some new tricks after playing at Lousy Lou’s for awhile. He was also gaining more money. He was up to $124. Yet, Denn said that it was hard playing with these experienced players.

Chapter 19 [Jimbo]:  In the chapter Denn’s ‘heater’ was described. It said that Denn had won himself over $400. Jimbo had noted the changes in Denn… no more ipod or glasses. Jimbo then tells Denn that he thinks Cattie is working at King’s Crossing. Then Denn turns and remains focused to his game.
Questions:  Do you think that Denn changing is a good thing or a bad thing? Also, why do you think Jimbo pointed out to Denn that he thought Cattie was working at King’s Crossing?
Statements:  I really think that Jimbo may be a part of the scheme. Even though Denn hasn’t been chasing Cattie too much, he is trying to lead him back to her. Makes me wonder.
Also, I’m going to point out a few more poker terms that we have come across:

Call- to match a bet

Fold- to drop out of a hand

Raise- to bet more chips than the previous bettor

Pocket pair- in holden, when you have two hole cards of the same rank

Set- three of a kind

Wow, that took long.

As the summarizer, I want to point out the setting, and the info of the book, and the time that is occurring during these parts.

Chapter 13-  Not much in this chapter except fro the strange visit from Sydney Carton.  It is weird, because he shows up at Lucie’s house, and just discusses how he is not well.  Also how they would not work out.  I think that he is a little mental, because I never knew that she was even considering marrying him at this point of the book.

Chapter 14-  This is where it gets really weird, and it really shows how the time period was.  In this chapter there is a guy named Robert, who is getting buried.  This is important, because they say he was a spy.  Also they started stealing things at the end of the funeral.

Chapter 15-16- I put these chapters together, because they all follow the same plot.  They all deal with this group that wants Darnay dead.  This group includes some spies, Monsieur and MadameDefarge, and many more.  They make petitions which they go to Versailles to see the king and queen.  Also in this chapter we find that Lucie might marry Darnay.

Chapter 17-19- They are officially married.  I pretty much knew that, but now it is official.  But now the latest is that Dr.Manette is making shoes again.  This is not good, because this is taking him back to the past.  So Mr.Lorry does destroy the stuff as Darnay, and the Manetts do to Wales.  Why do you guys think he is making shoes again?

Chapter 20- They get back just to see Sydney Carton.  What do you think of this guys character part in the story?  I think he is pretty annoying, and I think he is jealous.  Anyways he shows up because he thinks that Darnay hates him basically.  He wants the approval to come over whenever, and he gets it.

Chapter 21-Three years later…..  Lucie has a daughter.  Several years later….. the daughter dies, and a son is born.  So why do you guys think that Charles is letting all this time go by?  Also Sydney keeps dropping in over time.  Also Mr.Lorry, and Darnay are going to Paris during a dangerous French Revolution.

Chapter 22-We really find out a lot about Madame Defarge, as she is murdering a lot of people.  There group is now known as Vengeance.  But what do tehy need revenge on?  Does anybody understand this?  What is her reason to kill all these people?  Is there a thing called police, and laws at this time period?

Chapter 23-In this chapter, it talks about how there is no more class.  There is no rich and poor, because everybody is being killed.  It is like the poor has taken over.  This is complete madness.

Chapter 24-We know the year is 1792, and also it has three years passed again.  Same thing with the killing, and he leaves two letters behind as he leaves for Paris.

Other key thing- The knitting is like voodoo, as she knits names that will die.  She kills the people though.

Also notice the setting as it switched all over the place.  To understand the book, you have to understand how all the events show the theme of the book. It shows us number of settings where violence took place.  This book wants us to see how bad the time period of the French Revolution.  It is showing us a piece of history, but using different characters to give us a better idea of things that could take place.

Word/Character

Words-vengeance-To have revenge on someone.

class struggle-This is how things happen between the rich and the poor.

resurrection-Rising to life again.(Rebirth)

Mender of Roads- A character in the story that is apart of the Vengeance.

Question:  The story is called “Tale Of Two Cities,” what does that have to do with the book so far?  Support your information with examples.
