Adam Lough- Anil’s Ghost, DD

April 3rd, 2009 — 04:44 pm

In this section of the book Anil and Sarath go to many different places and people in order to find clues about what happened to Sailor, the body they found in a cave. Although much of this chapter also dealt with the retelling of Anil’s life. We also learn that Anil was married once but she doesn’t like to talk about it because it is shameful. Anil at first seemed like a structured and matter of fact kind of person, but as we are finding out she has a lot of skeletons in her closet.

What kind of person do you think Anil really is? Use examples from the book and explain why you feel that way.

In this section one of the people that Anil and Sarath go to for help is Sarath’s brother. His name is Gamini and he’s an Emergency Room doctor, even though they’re brothers they don’t seem to talk to each other much. Also, I would assume that their jobs would eventually intertwine considering that at one point they might need each others help to discover cause of death.

My second question is, using the conversations about the brother’s relationship, what do you think happened that could have caused them to be so distant???

Adam Lough, Anil’s Ghost- Discussion Director

March 20th, 2009 — 05:27 pm

Anil had a had a very different kind of life growing up. She was treated very strictly and had a regimented lifestyle. Even as an adult she seems cold and unmotivated.

So why is it that when she realized that the one body she found was murdered was she so intent on bringing the killer to justice?

Also, why is Anil so suspicious of Sarath?

He seems like he only wants to help her and hasn’t given her a reason to not trust him.

P.S. I wrote this blog after I came home from a long day of work and after a school sport and before i had to participate in the very time consuming and preplanned activities of my Friday night. Therefore i propose that the blogging dates should go until Saturday morning, there is hardly anything planned on then and they were much easier to do.  Thank you for your consideration.

My in-depth question that I think everyone should be able to think about is why do you think that Thomas Hardy ended the story the way he did? It seemed like Clym and Eustacia would live happily ever after but then Eustacia dies and Thomasin ends up happily ever after with Diggory. Do you think it’s fair that Thomasin, a less important character than Clym ends up happy in the end? At the end of the story, Clym ends up a preacher to the peasants in town and Thomasin ends up marrying Diggory.

I noticed that before Diggory and Thomasin got together, Clym and Thomasin barely communicated. But when Clym realized that his mother’s wish for Thomasin was not to be married to Diggory, Clym asks Thomasin if she will marry him…………….ew! They are relatives!!! That is nasty…I’m sorry. But Clym had not right to ask Thomasin to marry him out of the wishes of his mother. First of all, that put Thomasin in a very awkward position and Clym has no right to tell Thomasin she can’t be with Diggory due to their mother’s wishes because HE didn’t listen to his mother when she told him not to be with Eustacia. What do you think of that situation? Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?

Return of the Native-DD, Adam Lough, Pd. 3

February 28th, 2009 — 09:44 am

When Mrs. Yeobright went to go visit her son a terrible mistake was made. Eusatcia saw her coming towards the house and Mrs. Yeobright saw Clym entering the house. Thinking that Eustacia would tell Clym she was coming, Mrs. Yeobright decided to wait for him to come help her. But when no one ever came she thought that Clym was still upset and didn’t want to have anything to do with his mother. Mrs. Yeobright eventually collapses from exhaustion. Clym then finds her and sees that she has been bitten by a viper. They towns folk try to help her but she ends up dying. Then Johnny Nonsuch comes and tells them her last words, the she thought she was “a broken- hearted woman cast-off by her son”.

My question to you is, how do you think Clym will feel when he finds out that Eustacia didnt tell him his mother was coming? Also, how might Eustacia feel knowing that she indirectly killed Mrs. Yeobright? What do you think will happen to the couple?

Mallory Stickler Pd. 3 DD Return of the Native

February 20th, 2009 — 07:34 pm

Okay, some questions that I have to get the party started are…

Is there any “true love” in this book? Are there possibilities of “true loves?” Use previous and current relationships to support your answer. Don’t forget to use furture possibilities now that Clym is in town!

Also, are there unique customs in this book that are displayed? Some examples could be superstitious or religious customs that are displayed in the heath. Use examples that you find unique to the people of the heath. If you don’t find any extremely unique customs, tell what is similar to today’s culture. Or you can tell what is similar AND different.

:) have fun!

The Return of the Native Period Three Discussion Director

February 11th, 2009 — 08:11 pm

What is the main characters opinion of the Heath?  Do they like it or despise it?  Why are their opinions different?  How do their differences in opinion affect their interactions?  Remember to try and use the best examples from the text that you can, even though the book is wicked confusing.

Edit-

I was about to change this question, but saw that everyone had already responded to it, and the answers made pretty much sense, so I guess I will use my next question next time.  I was going to ask how Eustacia’s relationship with Damon effect the relatinship between Damon and Thomasin.  But ’sall good, so I guess we will wait untill next time.

On another note, for anyone who saw “V for Vendetta”, which I know that Adam and Mallory haven’t, I think the events in Reutrn of the native are being alluded to in the movie.  In the beggining of “The Return of he Native”, a “gunpowder plot” is mentioned.  While mentioned in passing, it was still mentioned.  In V for Vendetta, there was a ryhme:

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot…

Now, after some research I discovered that the 5th of November was the date of some sort of important treason perpertrated by Guy Fawkes.  It just so happens that the day Eustacia meets with Damon on the hill is the 5th of November, and that was her excuse for a bonfire.

I thought that it was pretty interesting, seeing as the movie was good, so I put it in.

Also, remember that this story is taking place in the 1800’s, and that is why the language is so much different.  Another thing I thought was *interesting* was the amount of trouble the people go through in the story for the person they love.  Do the best to answer the above question the best you can.  Not really to much  more to say I suppose….

Just a suggestion to Mr. Shank, if your reading this, it would be ridiculous if we could do some video blogs.
