Anil’s Ghost CW Post 2

April 3rd, 2009 — 05:09 pm

Dear Mr. Shank,

It was exceedingly difficult for me to get this blog done on Friday.  My home computer was broken, and I knew that I had to no choice but to blog.  I decided to head on over to the library to use one of their computers.  On my way to the Library, I was attack by a pack of ravenous wolverines.  After defeating all of the Wolverines in hand to hand combat, I once again resumed my quest for a computer.  About 10 minutes later, I arrived at the library.  I thought I was in the clear until I noticed that the Librarian was actually a Vampire!  I pulled out my trusty cross and used it to scald the Demons eyes.  I then pulled out a stake and swiftly drove it through the foul creature’s heart.  You see, the moral of the story is that we should blog on Saturday.  It would make our lives much easier.  (And help to save the lives of countless man-eating Wolverines)

In this section, I am going to be taking a look at Sarath.  Sarath is a character.  We never know what he is going to do next.  Is he working for the government?  Or is he a friend?  Is he gunnin’ for Anil?  Or is he just playing hard to get.  Sarath is such a shady character that it is hard to tell what he is going to do next.  In this section, Sarath serendipidously slinks softly sideways while solemnly saying “Saline.”  But seriously, this guy is shady.  It sometimes appears as if he is going to betray Anil, which makes us doubt if he ever is trying to help.  We don’t know much about Saraths background, except that he was previously married.  My question for you guys is:  Do you think Sarath will betray Anil?

Anil’s Ghost Character Watcher Post 1

March 20th, 2009 — 11:43 am

Let me start by saying, that I am doing this Blog in Keyboarding class because I do not have the time to do it at Home.  Mr. Shank, seriously.  We all loved to blog on Saturday morning.  When Blogs were due on Saturday, it was like a party that never ended.  Tonight I have Lax till 7, then I am going to a Lock-In at Adam’s church until Saturday.  It would have been a much more efficient use of time to have the Blogs due on Saturday.

Anyway, Anil’s(lol) Ghost is a pretty good book.  I have to admit, I was a little sceptical at first, because we chose the book for the sole purpose of Anil sounding like Anal.  Despit the resemblance, the book is pretty good.  We see the world through Anil’s eyes.  She is 33 years old, and is a native Sri Lankian.  Despite this, she prefers the Western style of living.  She enjoys Forensic Science, and is called by the Geneva Human Rights comitte to investigate a series of killings in Sri Lanka.  After arriving in Sri Lanka, she is immediately thrust into a world of violence and death.  We see how she reacts to the uncertainty throughout the first part of the book.  She can trust noone, and feels alone.  We see that the violence in Sri Lanka threatens everyone, and leaves nobody alone.  Anil is continually put into dangerous situations.  We will see how she continues to react in the rest of the book.

My question is do do you think anything will happen between Anil and Sarath?  Is Sarath Married?  Why did he lie to Anil?

Return of the Native Character Watcher Post 4

We have to look at a different character each time, and seeing as Thomasin and Clym were already taken, I will look at Eustacia.

In this section, Eustacia inadvertantley kills Mrs. Yeobright.  Instead of coming out and admitting her mistake, she chooses to keep it to herself.  This shows us how dishonest Eustacia really is.  She would rather force Clym to suffer the thought of having killed his mother than confess.  When Clym finds out on his own what Eustacia did, their is a fallout.  Eustacia leaves Clym, and returns to live at her former house.  (Interestingly, in the movie, it is Clym who leaves to go live with Thomasin, not Eustacia.)  Eustacia continues to live without Clym, but begins to see Damon.  Damon promises her a life of adventure, more than what Clym gave her.  Eustacia, still unsure if she loves Damon, agrees to allow him to take her part way to Paris.  The night they are meant to leave, Eustacia falls into a River/Stream.  Seeing his love in distress, Damon Follows her.  Diggory Venn and Clym also arrive on the scene and try to help.  Unfortunately, Eustacia and Damon both drown.

This section show a lot about Eustacia’s character.  She doesn’t care about other people.  She just wants to be living the high life, in a city somewhere.  She is so blinded by her wants, that she doesn’t see what the people around her are sacrificing. (Clym, for example.)  Eustacia, throughout the entire book, was snobbish.  The book ends with the same conclusion.

My question is why do you think Clym still loved Eustacia even though he knew that she was taking advantage of him?

As the character watcher, I have to chose one or two main characters and follow them throughout the segment of the book we read.

I chose to follow Clym Yeobright. In the previous part of the book we read, Clym came home from Paris and he started to “fall” for Eustacia. They became closer and closer, and in this part of the book, that affection did not stop. In fact, it grew. Clym’s mother, Mrs. Yeobright, was not happy about her son being interested in Eustacia. They got into a big fight and she did not want to speak to him again. Clym and Eustacia went off on their own and got married. They moved into a little cottage in the heath, that is until they can move to Paris again. Clym’s mother does not come to the wedding, but she does want to give her inheritance to Clym and Thomasin. She sends Christian Cantle to deliver the 100 Guineas. Damon did not go to the wedding, along with Mrs. Yeobright. Clym was also taken advantage of because Eustacia let Damon into their house while Clym was sleeping. I feel bad for him because Eustacia even told Damon that she wasn’t happy with her marriage. Clym has come a long way from the last part of the bok we read because he came home from Paris, he got married to Eustacia, and his relationship with his mother has gone right down the toilet.

The other character I thought played an interesting role in this part of the book was Damon. He was able to deliver the money to Thomasin and Clym, but Mrs. Yeobright did not let him. During Christian’s trip to deliver the money, Christian got caught up in a raffle for an expensive piece of cloth, which he wins. He also manages to tell Damon that he has all of Thomasin and Clym’s money, which Damon wants. He gambles and loses it all to Damon. But, Diggory Venn manages to save the day and wins the money back from Damon. But, Diggory makes a mistake and gives all of the 100 Guineas to Thomasin, when Thomasin was supposed to get 50 Guineas and Clym was supposed to get 50 Guineas. Damon was invited into Eustacia and Clym’s cottage, but this was while Clym was sleeping. Damon and Eustacia talked and they confessed that they still had feelings for one another. Damon’s personality keeps getting more and more shallow. He practically cheats on THomasin with Eustacia AGAIN, he lies, and he steals.

My questions for you are…

Was Clym making a smart decision when he married Eustacia against his mother’s will, and what do you think this will do to him and his mother’s relationship?

Also, why do you think Mrs. Yeobright didn’t trust Damon with the money? Afterall, he is her neice’s huband. What was Damon trying to do when he won the money from Christian? Would he have given it to the Yeobrights, where it was supposed to go? Why do you think Damon didn’t go to Eustacia and Clym’s wedding?

ROTN Character Watcher: period 3-Laurisa

Because I am the character watcher, I think I should talk about a different but important character in the book. That character is Granfer Cantle. He knows everyone in town by their first or last names and their occupations. He likes to talk about other people’s business, especially about the wedding of Thomasin Yeobright. He is eager to hear every new piece of information that may come about in that subject. He does not gossip to hurt other people in his town, but it does not seem to matter to him if they do not want him to say anything to anyone or not, because, he most likely will update everyone anyway. However, as the story goes on, I think that he is starting to care how people feel when he tells everyone their business. My question regarding this character is: Do you think that Granfer will stop his gossipping? or do you think that due to his gossipping there will be an outburst between who he gossips about and himself?

Return of the Native, Character Watcher, Pd. 3

The character that I would like to look at is Thomasin Yeobright. She is the niece of Mrs. Yeobright and had been away from her home because she was to be married. Her aunt did not approve of the marriage. After she changed the location of where she would like to be married on the day of her wedding, her groom forgot to get a new licence for the new location. So it seems to me that Thomasin is a spoiled girl, and always has to get what she wants. Although the fact that they have to postpone their wedding is embarrassing, why are they trying to hide it from the rest of the towns folk? They planned to get married the following day, so it really shouldn’t be such an ordeal. Why is Thomasin along with her aunt so intent on hiding this from everyone else?
