In these past chapters the narrator has stayed remarkably calm. He has changed from panicking at the martians arrival to staying calm and thinking about what he needs to do.  We learn that he has a brother but it seems that his introduction is mostly to describe the scene in London.  The narrator seems to be less concerned with his own survival now.  When he saw the martian destroyed in the river, he didn’t immediately try to escape from the resulting wave of scalding water.  The narrator is starting to take the place of a leader.  He is the one who makes the decisions (usually dealing with where to run) when he is with someone else.  For example, when he is with the curator, he is the one who decides to hide in the ditch to escape the martians.  He is still hopeful about the defeat of the martians as well.  Why do you think that the narrator has changed from acting instantly to survive to thinking before acting?  Do you think that the narrator will become more of the leader later in the book?  If so, why is he motivated to become a leader?

So far in the story we still do not know the narrorators name. In chapter 6 he takes a more general view instead of his own expeiriences. In chapter 7 he seems to be going crazy becasue he cannot remember much about what has happened and is going on. In chapter 8 the narrorator collects himslef and starts analyzing the events that are happening. The narrator points out the irony in that, on the brink of their collapse, the old habits of the social order are as strong as ever. The narrorator seems to be foreshadowing in the 9th chapter when he uses the color red to describe the red glow. This foreshadows the future bloodshed to happen. In the 10th chapter when the thrid cylinder falls the narroartor seems to be even more intruiged my the martians.

questions:

If you were the narrorator would you be interested in teh martians or would you stay away becasue of the danger?

The narrorator seems to represent order in the story, what does it mean when he starts to become crazy?

In the first five chapters of the story the main characters name is unknown.  What is known is that he is an adult male that seems to be in the upper class.  We can assume this because he knows things about meteorology and associates himself with higher level society.  When he finds out about the capsule that landed on earth near him, his interest is sparked and he goes to see it as soon as possible.  He is definately one of the braver people because he approaches the capsule with the other men (including Ogilvy and Henderson).  This seems to diminish a fair amount when the capsule opens though, when he backs up.  So my question to you is if you think the main character is brave or a coward?  Also do you think this will stay the same through out the story or will it change?  In other words if the you think he is brave will he become scared, or if you think he is already scared will he become courageous?  Use facts to back up you view.
