YAY! Were finally done!!!!!!!!!!

We can all agree that the humans of Earth are inferior to the martians being able to fly.  That is one of the most frightening part about the martians. H.G. Wells giving them the ability to fly spread their dominance around the globe. When this story took place humans could not fly,but as of today humans can fly anywhere thanks to the Wright Brother being able to obtain liftoff in North Carolina in 1903.

Another way the martians had dominance over the people of Earth was that they could travel through space. Wells describes space travel by a canister being shot to Earth like a bullet from a gun. When this story took place Earth could not travel through space. Today we understand the principals of rockets so that we can explore our solar system.

In chapter 8 it talks about them being the Angel of Death. Another Angel of Death was Dr. Mengele who worked as a doctor in concentration camps. Both killed numerous people.

Is the ending of the book, in which the Martians are destroyed by microbes and chased down by packs of dogs, a letdown? Can you think of a better ending?

Well in this past section of the book we now see that the martians clearly have not visited the Earth for nonviolent reasons. It was mildly noticable before, but now we see a glimpse of some of the real damage that these martians can do. When I was reading this section and the narrator said that he felt a surge of heroism it reminded me of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. If you haven’t read this novel before it was written by Mark Twain and is the sequel to “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. The reason why this reminded me of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” is because in both instances the main character takes up the mantle of someone else. What I mean by this is that in “War of the Worlds” the narrator felt the need to do something heroic to quench his desire for heroism and he didn’t feel this before, and he said that he only felt it because of the situation at hand. The same goes for “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. In this series written by Mark Twain Tom Sawyer is normally the instigator of trouble, but when Tom Sawyer is taken out of the story for a majority of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” we see that Huckleberry takes up the mantle of Tom Sawyer. This brings up an interesting question, are certain people who are more outspoken driven to fufill their certain desires when someone who normally would do so are no longer there? Also, do you think that these more outspoken people only step up to claim the mantle if someone else is not there, or do you think that they would stand up to someone else who already had the mantle? Don’t be afraid to respond.

I believe that this novel can be connected with Lord of the Flies. in the War of the Worlds the people are attracted to the crater were the martians have landed. There is a hidden danger in the hole though. When the martians fell out of the ship they started killing.  Havoc began to break out among the people. The same occured in the Lord of Flies. The boys had believed that the island was going to be fun, there were no rules, no adults, and there was a lot of space to play. Soon power struggles broke out and people were being killed. Just the same as the little boy with the birthmark who had disappered, the shop keeper had fallen in the hole and they never knew what had happened to him. The was that hidden danger that must have been in the spectators minds but they were so excited about somenthing new that they had dismayed it, the same as the boys on the island they knew that there was danger but they were so excited about being on the island that it temporarily put that out of their minds. Obviosly there will be violence and war in the story, but will the martians provide a sense of false comfort like the island did?
