So, this is our last blog for this book and then we are moving on to ‘The House of Sand and Fog’? We are going to have to discuss who will be doing which role for the first blog.

Taylor has gone through many things throughout the book. How has Taylor changed by the end of the book? Also, Taylor keeps in touch with her mother but still she does not seem to like her mothers’s new husband very much. Do you think Taylor will ever go back to see her mother? Why or why not? Estevan and Esperanza are illegal immigrants. With this as an issue today in our country, what do you think of the situation involving illegal immigrants? How should the United States deal with this in your opinion?

Summary:

In chapters 1-4 we read about a girl named Taylor and how she had a child given to her, but we also read about a girl named Lou Ann and how she was having a baby and how Angel left her. In our first posts we never mentioned Lou Ann. I think it was necessary to mention her because now in chapters 5-8 Taylor was looking for a place for her and Turtle to stay and she ended up moving in with Lou Ann and her son, Dwayne Ray. Taylor soon got a job working with Mattie even though she has a fear of exploding tires. Also in these chapters Turtle starts to talk. Taylor took Turtle to the doctor and pound out that she had multiple fractures that had healed as she grew. Taylor and Lou an also discovered that Turtle’s real name is April.

Questions:

1.    Do you think it was a wise decision for Taylor to choose to live with Lou Ann instead of choosing one of the other people that had an ad in the paper?

2.    Do you think that Taylor’s decision to work with Mattie was smart due to her fear?

3.    Do you think that Taylor should have reacted little more when Turtle started talking?

4.    Do you think that they should continue to call Turtle, Turtle or start calling her by her real name April?

Well, I am still trying to figure this thing out so hopefully this works and the group gets it. My question is why does Taylor choose to keep the baby that the one woman gave her? So far in the first four chapters she treats the baby well but she doesn’t talk about it as if she wants to keep the baby. So why does she choose to keep the baby when in her mind she doesn’t really want it or it may cause her problems down the road?

Also why is Taylor always second guessing herself? Is she just naturally one of those people who second guess themselves, or is she concerned about the effect that the decisions she makes will have. For example she was second guessing herself when she took the child instead of giving it back, why do you think that is? Could it possibly be because she is scared that she might not be a good influence on the child. Or maybe she thinks that she will not be able to support the child or be the good, steady parent that the child needs.
