The Time Machine per 1 connector post 2 Taran Copenhaver

April 3rd, 2009 — 06:54 pm

In this section the time traveler meets Weena, and discovers the Morlocks. He finds these vents and discovers that is were the Morlocks live. he starts making up a theory of how human kind separated into these two completely different species. My connection is between the homes and lives of the Morlocks and the civilization in The City of Ember. Of course the similarity between them is that they both live underground. Although in the City of Ember their city starts falling apart. which leads me to wander if there are imperfections in their underground world or if it is destroying the world above or is in danger itself. you would be led to believe that there has to be some sort of conflict that is to arrive. So far all we have seen is the daily hardships and lives of the future. Even though the time traveler is struggling to get home there has to be something stopping him or a real conflict to arise. There technically is no real conflict or worry of his survival right now because we know he makes it home some how.

So my question for you is do you think there is a more complex conflict at hand and if so what is it? Also what do you believe these Morlocks are? Sorry for making a connection to The City of Ember if you have never read it.

The Great Gatsby: Connector: Period 1

March 21st, 2009 — 01:23 pm

“He had one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced, or seemed to face, the whole external world for an instant and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself.”

This quote made by Nick reminds me of a quote from the movie, “Win a Date With Tad Hamilton.”  In the movie a boy likes a girl named RosaLee and he describes her as “having six smiles.”

“Like do you know she has six smiles? One when something really makes her laugh. One when she’s making plans. One when she is laughing out of politeness. One when she is uncomfortable. One when she is making fun of herself. And one when… she’s talking about her friends.”

In both of these quotes, the men are describing people and how much they like the other person’s smile and how good it makes them and others feel.  It seems that Gatsby will be a very interesting character to follow just after reading this quote.

What do you think about the quote?

Dracula 1st Post, Kianat Zamir, Period 3 Connector

March 20th, 2009 — 10:08 pm

This song is by Sirenia and it’s called “In My Darkest Hours”. I thought this comprised a pretty strong resemblance to Dracula. In chapters 1-7 we learn that Jonathan Harker has gone to meet Count Dracula and is held captive at his tower. He did not know that he was meeting Dracula, but the time he spends with him begins to get him suspicious. He fears Dracula and the time he is forced to spend with Dracula at his tower is probably the darkest time of his life thus far.

In your opinion in what ways can this song connect to the book Dracula and what do you think ‘winter’ and ‘morning star’ can mean when put in context with the book? Do you believe that Jonathan Harker is at the start of his darkest hours, or is he already facing them (meaning the time that he spends with Dracula)?

In My Darkest Hours

In my darkest of hours
I yearn for the light my life devours
winter’s at hand
In search of a key, a door, an endHear my voice, don’t quail inside the void
nor fear the sound of winter

Winds aroundin my darkest of nights
I yearn for the dawn to bring me alive
How to ascend?
While you hold the key that shield my end

Hear my voice, it’s calling on the dawn
Ascend to fall, but never to withdraw

Winter

nights…I hold them inside
I stand to fall, giving in on life as a whole
Winds of time…won’t mend my somber mind
I can’t deny that I’m on a closing way downMorning star

…shining from afar
your radiance diminish every day now
Evening star…you’ve lost your stalwart
Your skies endark
like my mind, my soul and my heartCome take my hand
and lead me on towards the end
The darkness in me
devours the strength I craved for all these years

These feelings I have never shown remain unknown
I really don’t know if I’m that strong…

These secrets I have held inside through all my life
I guess I’ll shield them till I die…

Brittany Miller-House of Sand and Fog- Connector post 1

March 20th, 2009 — 01:59 pm

Well, first off, this book is unlike anything I have ever read before so I can’t really make any in depth connections at this point. It is also unlike any movie I have ever seen. But, a little connection that I can make would be that in the first section of the book the lady named Kathy gets evicted from her house. This is much like what is happening all over the world today do to the horrible economy. Many of Americans are losing their homes due to various reasons. This is the only connection I found in this section.

My question would be, Why do you think Kathy was evicted from her house?

Wuthering Heights Pd. 1 – Connector – LAST POST!! – Heather Kinney

March 7th, 2009 — 11:15 am

Last Post!!

Ok, so I have two connections. They’re basically both about Catherine’s death, but in different ways.

The first is when she dies during childbirth. I connected it to the special on Discovery Health Channel called Birth Day. Even though I’ve never seen an episode where the mother dies, most of the births are high-risk and extremely dangerous, both for the mom and the baby.

The second is about the movie Jack Frost. When Heathcliff cursed Catherine for leaving him, he also told her to come back, even if it means putting himself in total agony, just to be with him. In the movie, Jack comes back to have a second chance. The thing that really doesn’t fit is the fact that he’s a snowman. But oh well.

There you go! Any opinions?

Return of the Native Mallory Stickler post 4

March 7th, 2009 — 10:11 am

Okay well, I’m not very good at connecting stuff, because they’re never in-depth connections, so beware Mr. Shank. I guess since this is the last post till Anil’s (anal’s?) Ghost, will make this post yellow and pink honor of Spongebob and Patrick. Btw, I’m watching Spongebob right now, it’s the one when Patrick gets a nose. :)

Onto the blog. I thought it was pretty funny when Diggory found the glove that belonged to Thomasin. It sounds exactly like Cinderella. Before she became rich and famous and in love, Cinderella was a girl that was treated unfairly and very unhappy. Thomasin was very unhappy at this point in the story because she had just lost her husband when he died in the dam thing. Diggory, whom she has growing feelings for, holds a dance for the heath, in which Thomasin attends. Just like in Cinderella, there is a dance, or in Cinderella’s case, a ball.  After the ball, Cinderella has to be home at a certain time. She is in such a hurry that she loses her glass slipper and Prince (Charming?) finds it. Sorry, it’s been a while since I’ve watched Cinderella. Anyway, Thomasin loses her glove at the dance. She sees Diggory outside waiting for a girl who has lost her glove. Thomasin thinks it’s outrageous that he would wait around for hours just for a girl that lost her glove. It turns out that the glove is her’s. In Cinderella, she thinks it is outrageous that the Prince is searching all over the town just for the perfect girl that fits in that perfect glass slipper. When the prince finally finds the girl that perfectl fits into the the slipper, they fall in love a live happily ever after. In Return of the Native, Thomasin and Diggory fall in love, get married, and live happily ever after in the heath. I’m pretty sure this book was written before Cinderella came out, but I thought it was a cute connection.

Now a wonderful question. This story is a Cinerella story for Thomasin and Diggory, but what about Clym? He was loyal the whole story, but he ends up very unhappy. Would yo have changed the ending to this story? Who would you have matched up whom?

PEACE! Until Anil.

Amber Jones War of the Worlds pd. 1 connector post 4

March 7th, 2009 — 10:05 am

YAY! Were finally done!!!!!!!!!!

We can all agree that the humans of Earth are inferior to the martians being able to fly.  That is one of the most frightening part about the martians. H.G. Wells giving them the ability to fly spread their dominance around the globe. When this story took place humans could not fly,but as of today humans can fly anywhere thanks to the Wright Brother being able to obtain liftoff in North Carolina in 1903.

Another way the martians had dominance over the people of Earth was that they could travel through space. Wells describes space travel by a canister being shot to Earth like a bullet from a gun. When this story took place Earth could not travel through space. Today we understand the principals of rockets so that we can explore our solar system.

In chapter 8 it talks about them being the Angel of Death. Another Angel of Death was Dr. Mengele who worked as a doctor in concentration camps. Both killed numerous people.

Is the ending of the book, in which the Martians are destroyed by microbes and chased down by packs of dogs, a letdown? Can you think of a better ending?

TOTC: Connector: LAST BLOG!: Leah Sevco

March 7th, 2009 — 09:33 am

LAST BLOG!

This does not really have anything to do with my position as connector, but I would like to point something out. Does it not seem that by the end of the story Carton is portrayed to be more of a central character than any of the other main characters? Throughout the story we could only really get into Lucie’s, Lorry’s, the Doctor’s and a few others thoughts. But now at the end of the story, we got inside Carton’s head and were able to see what he was thinking.

Anyway, now to be the connector. In a very distant way, because we all know that this story’s events were no way near as significant… the sacrafice that Carton made for Lucie, Darnay, Dr. Manette and Lorry could somewhat be related to the sacrafice that Jesus Christ had made on the cross for everyone in the world. Throughout Jesus’ time spent human on earth, he taught people of God and guided them in the correct direction to eventually get to heaven. Even though Carton may have not seemed like a huge main character, he was still there to help and enfluence people. And lastly, when Jesus had died and sacraficed himself for us on the cross, this is similar to Carton disguising himself and then sacrificing himself to save Lucie, Darnay, the doctor and Lorry. Do you agree with me? (Or laugh at me, haha) Can any of you think of another way that the two are similar?

Hope you guys enjoyed this book as much as I did………………………………

War of the Worlds Period 1 Post 3 Erin C.

February 27th, 2009 — 10:28 pm

This section of the book deeply describes the town, and the condition that it is now in.  The area seems to be almost completely barren at this point and most of the buildings are destroyed from the heat ray and the aliens.  This section is one of the good descriptions: “We pushed through them toward the railway without meeting a soul.  The woods acreoss the line were scarred and blackened ruins; for the most part the trees had fallen, but a certain proportion still stodd, dismal gray trunks, with dark brown instead of green foliage.”  All of these descriptions remind me a lot of the movie, “I am Legend”.  The only differences are that instead of being infected humans, they are martians.  So my questions for you are:  Will the planet become completely desolate by the aliens killing them all off?  If not, how do you think the humans will survive?  Try to use background information to draw your conclusions.

Again please everyone post as soon as possible. Sonam and I are going to be in NY and unable to post anytime tomorrow or Sunday because we do not have internet connection!!! Please save us!!!! hahaha

Pd 1 totc connector-alyssa tice post 2

February 21st, 2009 — 05:50 pm

The connection I made in this section was that when Lucie had to pick one of the three guys to marry it reminded me of the show Parental Control where the contestant’s parents don’t like their boyfriend/girlfriend so they have to go on dates with 2 new people. Then they choose between the new people and their boyfriend/girlfriend, which is a total of 3 people. This is alittle like lucie’s situation since she is choosing between 3 guys to marry. In the show the person looks for likeable traits to help them decide who they want to be with, and lucie also has to do this with Carton, Darnay and Stryver.

*This sorta a dumb connection, but do you guys agree?

*And which of the three do you think lucie will pickk?
