The Taming of the Shrew Pd. 1 Connector Final Post Taran Copenhaver

In the final section of the story we see that Pertrucio was acting like a lunatic because that is how he believes he will tame Kate. We see that in the end he helped out Kate more than any of the others helped out their wives. She is now more obedient than the other wives. This reminds me of the Ugly Duckling. I know it is a children’s story and is kind of weak but it just sticks out in my mind. In the Ugly Duckling there is this black little duck among these beautiful yellow ducks. He is made fun of and nobody wants to be around him. That is Kate, she was ugly to people and nobody wanted her hand in marriage. As time went on the duckling grew and matured into a beautiful swan while his brothers and sisters were just plain ducks. Pertucio is the time and aging. He is what changes Kate like the time changes the duckling. The Swan was more beautiful than the ducks and is loved. That is Kate when she is tamed. She is polite and more obedient than her sister and the widow.

So my question for you is, do you think that Petrucio had this planned all the time or did he really want to marry for the money and this just popped into his head? Do you think that he is going to be fair to her and do you think they are actually in love?

Thank you

-Taran

First of all Taran I think that is a very accurate connection. Though The Ugly Duckling is a children’s book it fits quite well.

Next, onto your question. I believe that Petruchio’s intentions changed over time. I think that at first he really did only marry for the money and that he was telling the truth in saying this. What I take out of what happened is that when he actually met Kate he realized that he would have to do something to change her, which put his plan into affect. At this point I still do not believe that he had any actual feelings for her though. After he transforms Kate into a lovely wife he realizes how much he really does care for her and her for him. I’m guessing that they are actually in love and that they will be fair and take care of each other.

Well, I much like Giddy would like to say that I personally think that this is a very good connection and it is fitting for your last blog. I have to admit though that I had not thought about this connection until I had laid eyes on your blog.

Now to answer your first question I would like to say that I personally think that Petruchio had wanted to originally marry Kate because of her economic stability, but then after meeting her he thought of a way to make her more tamed much like the other wives. The reason why I think this is because when we were first introduced to Petruchio he had seemed desperate for money and he had agreed to marry Kate even after he had heard all of the bad things the other suitors had to say about her. Also I don’t think that Petruchio is quite clever enough to think of an idea on the spot, like when he first heard about Kate.

Now to answer your second question Tear Bear I would like to say that I don’t think that they are in love, yet. Now I’m going to sound like Truax; back in those times I don’t think that there was such a thing as love. The reason why I say this is because guys in those times only really cared about a woman’s appearance, their lineage, and of course their dowry. So with all of these things luring men to marry certain women there really was no love involved with marriage, at least that’s what I think. Although I do think that Kate and Petruchio will learn to love one another as we have already started to see, and I believe that they will treat each other like a fair couple.

I think that Petruchio thought about this while hearing about Kate. He had started with this plan the first time he saw Kate, so it was obviously something he thought of early on. I think that he thought of it at the same time that he heard about Kate’s behavior and her large dowry. He couldn’t have wanted to be stuck with a shrew if he knew he couldn’t change her. He seems to be a crafty person and would have thought of it from the get go.

I think that he is going to be fair to Kate. He will be a little bit more demanding for a time, but it will go away after a few months. He will gradually move onto being nicer to Kate. If he gets too nice too quickly he could lose the progress that he made. I do think that they are in love. They were happy together and Kate does do whatever Petruchio wants. You could argue that Petruchio tamed Kate because he loved her. After all, he said he didn’t care what kind of woman Kate was as long as she had a lot of money. This means that he loved her enough to change her.

Erin, I think that you like that connnection becuase you can relate to the ugly duckling… hahaha just kidding. But remember, you will be the beautiful swan.!! :)

Well I think that this was his initail motive. Money can drive people to do crazy things. It inspires people. Mow the lawn.. no.. I’ll give you twenty five bucks.. DONE!!

I can’t see in the long run that he will be fair. He must be corrupt to get into a relationship for money. Not good.
