Final Bolg – Much Ado About Nothing – Per 1 -Illum.

This passage is going to be when Claudio basically trashes Hero at their wedding.

  CLAUDIO
20 Stand thee by, Friar.—Father, by your leave,
Will you with free and unconstrainèd soul
Give me this maid, your daughter?
LEONATO
As freely, son, as God did give her me.
CLAUDIO
And what have I to give you back whose worth
25 May counterpoise this rich and precious gift?
DON PEDRO
Nothing, unless you render her again.
CLAUDIO
Sweet Prince, you learn me noble thankfulness.—
There, Leonato, take her back again.
Give not this rotten orange to your friend.
30 She’s but the sign and semblance of her honor.
Behold how like a maid she blushes here!
Oh, what authority and show of truth
Can cunning sin cover itself withal!
Comes not that blood as modest evidence
35 To witness simple virtue? Would you not swear,
All you that see her, that she were a maid
By these exterior shows? But she is none.
She knows the heat of a luxurious bed.

So in this quote, Caludio tells Leanato that Hero is lying and a whore, and that he doesn’t need her and she doesn’t deserve a good man like him.  I found this quote interesting because we have always seen Claudio as such a kind gentlemen and now he is somebody very different.

My questions:

  1. Do you think Claudio handled the situation in the right manner, if not how should he have handled it?
  2. What do you think got into Claudio to do such a horrible thing? (peer pressure, lies, etc.)
  3. What do you thing Hero should do? (should she take him back after this or leave him) (your opinion)

Her blush is guiltiness, not modesty.

Well, I think that Claudio did handle the situation rather childishly. He should have at least confronted her in private before the wedding instead of embarrassing her during the wedding. He should have handled it more maturely and privately instead of parading the situation to the universe.

I think that the lies of Don John and that other dude got Claudio into this mess. Along with Claudio believing them and listening to them instead of taking the accusations straight to Hero. He just believed what everyone else was saying instead of going to the person who was actually involved. This is what he gets for listening to rumors.

I think that Hero should maybe give him a second chance, because everyone needs a second chance sometimes. They should just work on their communication skills and talk to one another if a problem like this arises again. So, I guess she should take him back.

    1. I would have to agree with Brittany and say that Claudio did not handle the situation in the most appropriate manner. He could have taken Hero aside and talked with her and explained how he felt. He also could have simply not accepted her as his wife in the wedding ceremony and then explained to her his reasoning after. It is understandable though why he would be so mad, but I think he should have kept his cool.

    2. He was tricked into thinking his fiancé was a whore. I do not believe he acted the most appropriately, but it is obvious why he acted in such a manner. A lesson can be learned from this and that is to not let rumors get to you and to not draw conclusions without having all evidence.

    3. I think that if Hero really loved Claudio, she would give him another chance. I also think that Hero should go to Claudio and sort things out, get each other’s stories straight. There was obviously some miscommunication, as well as some deceitful plans that both should learn about.
