Taming of the Shrew Pd. 3 DD Paula Ferrara
LAST POST EVER!!!!!!!!!
Alright, I’m just going to jump straight into the questions:
1. Gremio and Hortensio, who were so spirited about winning Bianca at the beginning of the play, gave up pretty quickly when it became apparent that she loved Lucentio. Normally if you truly cared about someone, you’d try and fight for them. Therefore, did they really care for and love Bianca?
2. When Vincentio came to visit his son Lucentio unanounced, Biondello, Lucentio’s servant and apparently Vincentio’s too, was very quick to renounce him to cover up the fact that he and Lucentio lied to Bianca’s father to win her hand. He even tried to convince Lucentio to lie and say his father was actually the merchant. Thankfully he didn’t, but begged amnesty for Biondello and Tranio, who also helped him. Do you think that was right, to beg forgiveness for two people who wanted you to turn down your own father?
3. During Kate’s taming, she is not allowed to eat. When she tries to get Grumio to sneak her food, he toys with her and she in turn gets mad and says that he enjoys her torment. Do you think that was true? After seeing her torment so many other people, do you think Grumio enjoyed tormenting her in return?
4. Kate seems happier now that she’s been tamed. But do you think there’s still some pent up resentment towards Petruchio still inside her? Also, after Kate’s speech at the end of the play with her telling Bianca and Hortensio’s new wife that wives should live to serve their husbands, do you think they will change their ways like how Kate did?
5. Kate and Petruchio, who seemed to hate each other, are now the most harmonious. Soft-spoken Bianca has renounced her kind ways and surprises everyone by refusing Lucentio. It was deemed that they would be happiest, but now its a little unclear. There isn’t a lot known on Hortensio and his new wife but they seem to be faring the same as Bianca and Lucentio. After the bet in the final scene, which couple do you think will live more harmoniously?
6. Final question…..what happened to the subplot with Christopher Sly??????

Did I miss something? Why did no one blog?
Whatever…I’ll answer my questions now I guess.
1. I think instead of loving Bianca as a person, they loved her public status. She’s rich, mild-mannered, and beautiful. But they never got to talk to her and they never got to know her as a person. That’s why they gave up so easily when her and Lucentio’s love became more apparent.
2. In some ways, yes I think it was ok to ‘forgive and forget’. But still, Biondello and Tranio should have gotten some form of punishment. If they hadn’t been trying to help Lucentio, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have asked for forgiveness for them.
3. I don’t really know if Grumio enjoys tormenting Kate. His feelings on the entire matter are never clear. He recognizes Kate’s bad behavior and comments on it. At the same time, he also sees his master’s bad behavior but doesn’t put an end to it because he knows it’s all a charade. All in all, I don’t think he enjoyed tormenting Kate, but he didn’t feel sorry for her when he did it either.
4. I think Kate will keep to her tamed ways. She’s happier, her family is happier, and her marriage will probably have a chance to be happy too. To answer the second question, I think Bianca and the widow will definitely take consideration to Kate’s words, especially after taking in her dramatic change of attitude.
5. I think each couple will live happily ever after in their own way. Kate has stopped being a shrew and Petruchio can stop acting mean to her, Bianca and Lucentio have found true love and both their father’s blessings on their union, and Hortensio has got his riches while the widow has gotten her man. Each couple is happy and will forever live in harmony.
6. I guess it just faded away….

I BLOGGED!
1. No, this question is obvious. They wanted to marry someone that was going to put them higher on the social ranks and also give them more money in their pocket. Thats how it was back then. People didn’t marry for love, they married for money, which is sad. And if people still do that, then that is pitiful.
2. Well I don’t neccessarily think that Shakespeare was going for that point of view. I think that he wanted us to see that Lucentio was willing to totally lie about his father to marry the girl that he loved. Kind of wierd, but thats how I see it.
3. I think that he was just enjoying that fact that he got to put Kate in her place since Kate has put him in his place forever. The leaves have turned and things have changed.
4. I do think Kate is happier, she finally realized that the things that she has been doing (her old ways) have been hurting her more than the people that she was doing them to. And if the two other women see Kate doing this, then maybe they will follow her demonstration and do the same.
5. UMM KATE and PETRUCHIO! DUH! I do think that they will all find their happy mediums though. They will work things out, don’t worry Paula.
6. I don’t think that it was important at all. It obviously wasn’t important enough to continue it… ?
