Taming of the shrew post 2 Bp
In act 2 we still see that Bianco is not completly sure who she prefers. Or she is hiding it from us. The quote is siad by Bianco to Katherine while she is being beaten “ Is it for him you do envy me so?
Nay then you jest, and now I well perceive
You have but jested with me all this while:
I prithee, sister Kate, untie my hands.
This quote shows that Katherine is completly jealous that Bianco’s ability to choose and wait for the right suitor. Why do you think that Katherine is so jealous of Bianco. Do you think that Katherine went to far by beating the living crap out of Bianco? Who do you feel is the best suitor? Why?

I think that Katherine is jealous of Bianca because Bianca is the one all of the suitors want. Katherine is treated as deadweight because she has to be married first, but no one likes her. So, Katherine is jealous because Bianca is much more popular and well received. Their father also seems to prefer Bianca more, so that could be a factor as well.
I do think that Katherine went to far by doing that to Bianca. However, we know that she has done those types of things before. It was worse this time because their father was present.
I think that the best suitor is Horensio. He is one of the only ones who is actually honest. The other ones pretend to be tutors or try other tricks to win Bianca’s and her father’s favor.

I personally think that Kate did go a little too far by beating the crap out of her little sister just for being more appealing than her, but I can perfectly understand why she would go that far. She was the older sister and even she realized that her father had a little more liking to her little sister who would not doubt bring his family name more pride and honor. This is quite unfair but I don’t think that Kate solved this problem the way that she should have. She could have simply faced the problem head on by realizing that she was a “w”itch and try to fix that problem.
And now I would like to disagree with Easter Bunny. I personally believe that Lucentio is the best choice of a suitor for Bianca. The first reason why is because I personally doubt that Easter read the whole part that we were supposed to read because we find later on that Lucentio while disguised as a tutor also reveals his true identity and partially woos over Bianca. Easter Bunny if you did read this section I apologize, and please correct me if you find any mistakes with my logic or anything else you would wish to argue with me about.

I think it is quite clear why Katherine is so upset with Bianca. Katherine is not only not liked my the men in the story, but her father also seems to neglect her. Her father adding to her already hurt feelings probably just makes her even worse. This reminds me of Elphaba in Wicked because all of her father’s attention is given to her younger sister, Nessa. This is one of the reasons she becomes what people view as wicked. Without having love in your life causes you to become a person who does not love others. Now, that Kate hungers for that love it is not given to her, but her sister causing her to be jealous.
Though Kate does hold a grudge against her sister, her actions are not acceptable. She gets way out of hand by beating her sister. The sister does not control the men. Their preferring Bianca is not her fault, though of course she does nothing to stop it. Kate could have done many other things to solve her problem. For one thing, Kate could have talked to her sister, instead of hurting her. This most likely would have accomplished more anyway. She also could try to be more like her sister to gain the affection of others, even though her husband has already been chosen for her.
I am not sure who I believe is the best suitor. At first I liked Gremio the most for being honest, but as Sonam pointed out, Lucentio does eventually reveal his identity. Though this may sound bad I must point out that for the time period marrying a person with money is very important. Only because I think the two of them are pretty tied personality-wise for this reason I am leaning towards Lucentio, because he is a good person and he has money. If he was not a good person however I would not think this.

Sorry Brett, I always forget to respond to your post. I think that Katherine is jealous of her sister because she can not find love and there are many men who love her sister. I think she did go too far by beating the crap out of her sister. She exploded in anger and did not think or talk about it. Also by her doing that it lowers her chances of finding love even more if people find out about it making her even more miserable. I think that Lucentio is the best suitor because he is honest, and he seems to be madly in love with her.
