A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Jenni Kantor; Pd. 3; Illuminator

Alright, this week we read Act III. The passage that I found was actually quite interesting Please read it and answer the questions that follow:

Titania:

Out of this wood do not desire to go:
Thou shalt remain here, whether thou wilt or no.
I am a spirit of no common rate;
The summer still doth tend upon my state;
And I do love thee: therefore, go with me;
I’ll give thee fairies to attend on thee,
And they shall fetch thee jewels from the deep,
And sing while thou on pressed flowers dost sleep;
And I will purge thy mortal grossness so
That thou shalt like an airy spirit go.
Peaseblossom! Cobweb! Moth! And Mustardseed!

 [Enter Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth, andMustardseed]

Peaseblossom:

Ready.

Cobweb:

And I.

Moth:

And I.

Mustardseed:

And I.

All:

Where shall we go?

Titania:

Be kind and courteous to this gentleman;
Hop in his walks and gambol in his eyes;
Feed him with apricocks and dewberries,
With purple grapes, green figs, and mulberries;
The honey-bags steal from the humble-bees,
And for night-tapers crop their waxen thighs
And light them at the fiery glow-worm’s eyes,
To have my love to bed and to arise;
And pluck the wings from Painted butterflies
To fan the moonbeams from his sleeping eyes:
Nod to him, elves, and do him courtesies.

Peaseblossom:

Hail, mortal!

Cobweb:

Hail!

Moth:

Hail!

Mustardseed:

Hail!

Bottom:

I cry your worship’s mercy, heartily: I beseech your
worship’s name.

Cobweb:

Cobweb.

Bottom:

I shall desire you of more acquaintance, good Master
Cobweb: if I cut my finger, I shall make bold with
you. Your name, honest gentleman?

Peaseblossom:

Peaseblossom.

Bottom:

I pray you, commend me to Mistress Squash, your
mother, and to Master Peascod, your father. Good
Master Peaseblossom, I shall desire you of more
acquaintance too. Your name, I beseech you, sir?

Mustardseed:

Mustardseed.

Bottom:

Good Master Mustardseed, I know your patience well:
that same cowardly, giant-like ox-beef hath
devoured many a gentleman of your house: I promise
you your kindred had made my eyes water ere now. I
desire your more acquaintance, good Master
Mustardseed.

1. How did Bottom use each fairy’s name to help plant them into his memory? (How did he make fun of their names in a matter of speaking?)

2. Where do the fairy names come from? (You may have to look this up.)

3. Do you think that Bottom will try to escape? Why?

That is all I have for you!

    For Cobweb, Bottom says he’ll use him as a bandage if his finger gets cut, because a cobweb is like silk. For Peaseblossom, he says he wants to know Peaseblossom’s parents. I looked up what the names mean and in modern language they mean Mr. and Mrs. Peapod. This is a joke because their child would grow or blossom, thus the fairy’s name. For the final fairy, Mustardseed, Bottom says that Mustardseed’s family has been killed because mustard is put on hot dogs.

    I am not able to find the answer to your second question. All I could find was that the name Oberon came from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

    I don’t see why he would want to escape. He has servants, and Bottom seems like a narcisist who thinks that he should lay around all day while other people do his work, so I don’t think he will try to escape.

    I agree with Brandon in the fact that he will use a cobweb for his cut. I did not look up what Peaseblossom meant but I am glad Brandon did. How do you consider it a joke? They would bloom or blossom like peas. Mustardseed can be put on hot dogs and this is a way to remember the name.

    Like Brandon, I could not find your second question. I looked for it and all it did was mention the names, it did not explain where the fairy names came from.

    Finally, I agree with Brandon, why would he want to escape? He has no reason to and everything seems to be going alright with him. He also just hangs out and has other people do work for him as Brandon said.

    1)I agree with Brandon and Dan. For cobweb, Bottom remembers the name by saying that if he cuts his finger he will use cobweb as a bandage to stop the bleeding. For Peaseblossom, Bottom remembers the name by saying that his mother and father are named Mr. and Mrs. Peapod, together they named their son Peaseblossom, or Pea’s blossom when you combined. For Mustardseed, Bottom said that Mustardseed’s family members have been used on (ox-beef) or hot dogs and they have gotten eaten. Bottom is making fun of the fairies names by relating them to things that he knows and placing them in a sense of humor.

    2)Sorry, Jen I looked up where they’d get their names but there wasn’t anything.

    3)I again agree with Brandon and Dan because Bottom is as ease with the fairies and has no reason to want to escape, he has servants that will serve to his every will and the Queen of fairies loves him and thinks that he is handsome, smart and funny,
