A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Brandon Greer: Discussion Director: Post 1: Act 1

Okay guys, I don’t know when I’ll be back yet, but here’s my post on Act 1.

1. Compare and contrast the play that the theatre group is going to present with the plot of Romeo and Juliet.

2. What are the similarities and differences between Lysander’s plan and Friar Laurence’s plan? Which do you think is more foolproof?

3. Lysander and Demetrius both love Hermia, but the way that they show it is different from the other. Compare and contrast.

Yeah!! The Professor speaks to us once more! We miss you Brandon and (more importantly) I have no one else to annoy/argue with in English besides Mr. Shank!

Okay, sorry for the little note, here is my blog for you:

    1. The plot of the play in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is not described as well as it should be for a proper comparison, but I will try my best. In our current play, the plot involves the deaths of the two main characters, Pyramus and Thisby in relation to “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” where both main characters share a similer fate. Both plays contain a main character’s love for the other main character. Also, both play’s main characters appear to be wealthy. As for differences, there are many different types of characters in each play.

    2. To answer your second question, I believe that Lysander’s plan is the more foolproof of the two. THe Friar had too many uncertain factors and too many chance ideas could have occured. If a plan is less complex, it is more likely to succeed.

    3. Lysander’s love seems to be more steadfast and actually love rather than the immpression of love that Demetrius appears to be giving. Demetrius seems to only be in love with Hermia’s beauty, or perhaps her family’s wealth.

There is my reply for you, and I hope you get better soon Brandon! :)

Sorry, same as Dan had no idea you posted, we were told you wouldn’t so…but it’s you, I guess I should’ve expected you to blog, sorry! Get better soon!

    Ok, now onto my blog

    1) Well the theme of the play is different. The main characters are in love with each other despite the fact that the girl’s father disapproves and wants her to marry of his choice. There is another character, Helena who is in love with Demetrius who loves Hermia who loves Lysander who loves her back.

    2) Both Friar Lawrence and Lysander did not expect changes in their plans; Lysander did not expect anything to go wrong but Friar Lawrence did, he knew that there would be a risk if Juliet took the potion as for Lysander he did not expect to take a potion and fall in love with the wrong girl. I think that the Friar’s plan was more foolproof. Although, Jenni does have a point and I agree to that as well.

    3) Lysander really loves Hermia as his true love but Demetrius loves Hermia only on the outside he shows that he loves her but he only loves her beauty because he ditched Helena after he saw Hermia. He didn’t get to know her or anything he just claimed to have fallen in love with her. On the other hand, Lysander and Hermia really share a connection and they both love each other.

I’ve felt like crap, so the responses are a lot later than the initial posts.

    1. Differences: Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. The theatre group refers to the play in A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a comedy. Instead of meeting at a masquerade ball like Romeo and Juliet, Thisbe and Pyramus meet in a hole in the wall. Thisbe, unlike Juliet, does not plan her “death”. There is also no lion in Romeo and Juliet.

Similarities: Their families hate each other. The male figure commits suicide when he finds out that his lover has “died”. The female figure is revealed to still be alive. She finds her lover dead and kills herself.

Question 2: Both plans involve leaving the town, so that the lovers would be away from more powerful people that can control them. The girl is destined to be married to someone that she does not like. The plan is also confided with a third party (Friar John and Helena). The third party also messes up the plan. Friar John cannot go to Romeo and Helena, is going to intervene.

Differences: There is no Friar Laurence character who oversees the plan. In Midsummer, Lysander creates the plan, something Friar Laurence does in Romeo and Juliet, and he is also the girl’s lover.

Question 3: Lysander and Demetrius both think that Hermia is attractive. Lysander, however, is deeper. He wants what is best for both of them. Demetrius, on the other hand, is shallow. He only “loves” Hermia because he thinks she is hot. Demetrius also “loved” Helena until he saw Hermia.

I’ll probably be getting out Friday or Saturday. I probably won’t be going to school on Monday. Hopefully, I’ll be back Tuesday.
