Much Ado About Nothing; Pd 1; Illuminator

With the following quotes and passages I am going to focus on Beatrice and the first time we meet her.

Act 1 Scene 1

LEONATO

You must not, sir, mistake my niece. There is a
kind of merry war betwixt Signior Benedick and her:
they never meet but there’s a skirmish of wit
between them.

BEATRICE

Alas! he gets nothing by that. In our last
conflict four of his five wits went halting off, and
now is the whole man governed with one: so that if
he have wit enough to keep himself warm, let him
bear it for a difference between himself and his
horse; for it is all the wealth that he hath left,
to be known a reasonable creature. Who is his
companion now? He hath every month a new sworn brother.

In this conversation we learn that Beatrice and Benedick do not get along and seem to have a grudge against each other.  We also see that Beatrice is not the nicest person and can be rude and ignorant.  Why do you think Beatrice and Benedick do not get along?

Act 2 Scene 1

LEONATO

Well, niece, I hope to see you one day fitted with a husband.

BEATRICE

Not till God make men of some other metal than
earth. Would it not grieve a woman to be
overmastered with a pierce of valiant dust? to make
an account of her life to a clod of wayward marl?
No, uncle, I’ll none: Adam’s sons are my brethren;
and, truly, I hold it a sin to match in my kindred.

In this conversation we learn that Beatrice doesn’t want to get married and basically think men are dirt.  It shows us that Beatrice is very independent and doesn’t like to be controlled by other people.  Do you think being independent like Beatrice is good or bad, why or why not?

In my opinion, Beatrice and Signor Benedick are a lot alike and therefore their personalities clash. They are both independent and clever and therefore are not able to agree with each other. There is a possibility though that because they do not get along that they may fall in love, a situation that often ends up in this matter.

I believe that it is good to be independent but Beatrice seems a little too stubborn. This characteristic is not necessarily a good one to have, for it makes it hard for that person to get along with another. In this case, I do not believe that Beatrice is as independent as she is stubborn and therefore I do not believe it is good to be.

    1. I don’t think that Beatrice and Signor Benedick get along because their personalities are so similar. I think that they are both very witty and sharp almost to a degree of mocking. I think that because of this, the two get into little spats. I think that they could get along very well though, if they learn to control their tempers a little.

    2. I think that it is good to be independent like Beatrice because she can hold her own and can stand up for herself. I think that this kind of personality can also get you into trouble though, because it’s easy to get into a fight with someone if they are so stubborn that they won’t listen to what you have to say. I think that Beatrice’s personality controlled would be a little easier to handle.

I think that they do not get along because they are secretly in love and they just do not want to admit it. Because they don’t want to admit it, they try to talk themselves out of being in love by finding the flaws in the other person. It is either that, or they are madly in love and they just don’t know it yet. Or the final scenario is that they are madly and love and they just don’t want they families to find out so they act like they desperately despise each other.

I think that it is a wonderful thing to be independent. I think that being independent is good, especially with women. This shows us that she is perfectly capable of taking care of herself and she does not need to depend on a man for anything. That is something that most women today lack. They all think that they need a man to survive and that is complete and utter nonsense and Beatrice proves that.
