“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Character Watcher, Kianat Zamir Pd.3

I’m really enjoying this book, i love the tensions between the lover’s and i can’t wait to see who ends up with who and how!

Ok, now to the blog. Let’s focus on the main characters Lysander, Hermia, Helena, and Demetrius. These characters have been given very interesting characteristics, Lysander and Demetrius love Hermia and Helena loves Demetrius even though Demetrius doesn’t love her back. And Hermia and Helena are best friends. But i want your opinion on Helena , do you think that she is a good friend to Hermia?

Helena: Hermia tells Helena about her plan to run away with Lysander because she trusts her. But Helena decides to tell Demetrius about Hermia and Lysander running away to win his love. Hermia trusted Helena but Helena was too much in love with Demetrius to betray him, if you were in Helena’s place how would you react, would you rather betray your friend or the person you love? She was envious of Helena’s beauty and the fact that Demetrius loved Helena rather than her and broke promises about being with her.

Demetirus: Do you think that Demtrius was wrong to leave Helena after he betrothed (promised to marry)her for Hermia? Or do you think that he was following his heart and did the right thing by trying to be with Hermia? Did Demetrius want to be with Hermia because of her beauty or because he truly loved her?

    Act II

This act begins with two fairies meeting in the woods. They are not very happy with each other and warn to stay away. Oberon wants Titania’s boy but she refuses to let him go. Oberon’s servant is nicknamed Puck and he plays tricks on people. The two fairies meet and question why they are so close to Athens before the wedding. They accuse each other of loving the two people getting married. Titania explains that she will hold the boy close to her to honor his dead mother. She wants him to dance with her, but until she gives Oberon the boy, they are ‘fighting.’ Titania goes away and Oberon says he will get back at her before the night is over. He tells Puck to go and find a flower that when rubbed on someone’s eyes makes them fall in love with the first thing they see. He hopes it will work on Titania and she will fall in love with a weird creature or thing.

Demetrius and Helena come into the glade and Oberon makes himself invisible so he can listen in on their conversation. Demetrius tells Helena that he doesn’t love her and she should stop following him. Helena tries to tell him how much she loves him, but he doesn’t listen. He is just mad at everything in general. Oberon watches them leave and says that when the night is over, Helena will have Demetrius chasing after her. Puck then returns to the glade with the potion. He says to go to where Titania sleeps and to put it on a boy so he falls in love with the lady. Oberon goes and puts the spell on Titania; Hermina and Lysander walk into the glade. They agree to fall asleep far away from each other to respect traditions even though Lysander isn’t all for that. Puck comes back and says that he cannot find this boy that Oberon talks about. He then accidentally spreads the potion on Lysander, mistaking him for the boy. Helena is now left behind and afraid of the dark. When Lysander wakes up the potion works and he becomes deeply in love with Helena. Helena tries to tell him he loves Hermina but he says that she means nothing, his love is only for Helena, etc… She storms off thinking that he is just making fun of her. Hermia then wakes and can’t find Lysander. She goes off into the woods to look for him.

    Act 1

Theseus and Hippolyta begin with talking about their wedding plans. He was very excited about his wedding and tells Philostrate to give them something to do until their wedding day. Philostrate tells Hippolyta that he will marry the two of them with a big celebration at the wedding. Egeus comes into the room and starts complaining about his daughter. Hermia doesn’t listen to her father when he says she has to marry Demetrius. They threaten her with death. Lysander accuses Demetrius for loving Hermia’s friend, but once he found Hermia; she just left her friend. They all leave except for Lysander and Hermia, and she is left to think about the wedding. Lysander and her make a plan to travel to a house far away and get married and be free from Athenian law. Hermia gets excited and agrees to go. Helena enters and is sick because Demetrius doesn’t love her anymore. They tell her the plan and wish her goodluck. She is envious and they go and prepare for the trip. She thinks that if she goes into the woods after them, she can win back Demetrius’ love.

In Athens, a group of people practice for the wedding, playing music. They discuss a song that has meaning that they will play at the wedding. They assign the parts of the ensamble. Bottom interrupts saying he should be the one assigning the parts. Quince convinces him that his part is good for him. He says that the lion’s part is very hard to learn anyway. Quince once again has to convince Bottom that he cannot play the lion. This whole scene is based on planning the music for the wedding.

Well Kianat to answer your first set of questions:

Helena is one of those characters that I really love. Though Helena gives away Hermia’s secrets and betrays her, her character makeup is fascinating to watch develop. If I was in Helena’s position, I would most likely stay out of the fight. Eventually something will go amiss for betraying one you care about; it is better to be safe than sorry.

To answer your second set of questions:

Demtrius was wrong to leave Helena for Hermia. He does not love her for herself, but rather for her beauty. There has been nothing through the two acts so far that has truly indicated any affection between the two. Helena truly cares for Demtrius while he chases another girl who just happens to be Helena’s friend. Helena truly has a strong heart.

    To Dan:

Your summery was short and sweet, yet summed up all the information quite nicely. I thank you for your efforts, but would appreciate it if you put in the interesting words you found. That is one of the funniest parts of the blogging and makes it more bearable. :)

    There’s my response for you!

    1. Fairies- main characters in the story, and can also be used to describe male soccer players..i.e. foot fairies :) It is also a fun word to say and the tooth farie brings me money when I lose a tooth!

    2. Goodfellow- this is the name of Oberon’s servant and is a very funny name. He can be ridiculed very easily.

    3. Dream- not only is this part of the title, but the setting of the story. It is very important because it is the basis on all major plot ideas and changes.

    4. Love- also very important to the story because as a Beatle’s reference, “Love is such an easy game to play…” They are using potion to make people fall in love.

    5. Curse- this is important to the story becuase the potion plays a huge role. The curse is going to change the characters forever.

I think that these charaters can be very confusing to follow. There is a lot of drama between them and the plot is based off of lies and drama and deception. Secrets and betrayal, etc.. I agree with Jenny where Hermia is a cool character. She told the secrets but I would not feel bad. Helena should stay out of the fight. It would make the book more interesting if they would full out brawl though! haha.

    Your second questions:
Demetrius should not have left Hermia for Helena. He doesn’t truly love her he just wants her for her looks as Jenny said. The pg-13 version of that is that he just wants some. He needs to realize what true love is and its not what’s on the inside, but on the outside that counts. It’s pretty low to get rid of someone you love for their friend. ouch! :(

    Drama!

It’s allright Dan, sorry i was just wondering if you forgot the book name, lol. Your words are quite intersting and hold a lot of meaning in the book.

Nice responses guys! I enjoy reading your opinions on the characters.

    Wow this is confusing!

From this, it seems that Helena is one of those girls that would do anything for love. She does something and then later she’ll say “Oh, sorry Hermia”. But what’s different about Helena is that she’s actually in love with Demetrius. She just doesn’t think that he’s some super hot guy. She really cares about him and is heartbroken when he falls for Hermia.

Demetrius is a player. He probably doesn’t really love Helena or Hermia. He just sees some chick and tries to get with her. If Juliet walked onto the scene, he’d be fighting Romeo for her. Demetrius was wrong to abandon Helena just because he saw Hermia. Lysander probably knows Hermia a lot better than Helena.

Dan, good summaries as usual. Interesting words, but I thought we were only reading act 1? Why do you have an act 2 summary up there?
