The Memory Keeper’s daughter, last post DD, Derrick Truax

Well, better late than never right?

Okay so we are finally done with this silly book. First of all, after reading the ending do you change any of the things you said about Dr. Henry and his personality? How do you think Dr. Henry changed towards the end of the book?

Do you guys think its okay for Phoebe to move out on her own and have some more free will?

Finally, a kind of obvious discussion maker, what do you all think the theme of the book was and why?

Sorry this is extra late, I got wrapped up in the Flyers Pens game (Flyers won!). Since my comments are already so late Ill comment later.

Oh-kayy. I officially hate you now. I watched that game. Pens are better than the Flyers, thank you very much.

    Ok. I’m done.

I don’t think that just because David dies that we should change any perspective of him. He is still a father who, in my opinion, wants to force his son to be rich instead of happy. He is a husband who kept a daughter, even though Phoebe has a disability, from his wife. And, he kept that daughter from her mother and brother.

I think that Phoebe should actually be coaxed out into an independent life with Robert. Sure, they won’t have a completely normal life, but it’s better than being in an institution.

Well, I think one theme that relates to David rather than the whole book ties in with his photography. He wrapped himself up in his pictures that he abandoned his empty, screwed up life to see what he wants to through the lens of his camera.

And I say again, Pens kick the Flyers any day.

Hmmm I do believe the Flyers destroyed the pens…

I thought with the ending that Dr. Henry was shown not to be as selfish as some of you were saying. Personally, the ending didn’t really change my view of him very much.

I agree, Phoebe should try to lead an independent semi-normal life. She would probably be much happier living a normal life that living a life with people telling her she is special.

So Heather, are you saying that a theme is that one should find something they love and use it to ignore their problems? Thats fine except that means the theme is saying that you shouldn’t care if your life is messed up, and this seems off to me.

Ok first off I don’t mean that you shouldn’t care if you’re life is messed up. I was trying to make a statement that David uses photography to escape from his conflicts. There are plenty of people in the world that have a place or certain area of interest that they use to get away that is calming for them.

And I do believe the Pens lead the series 2-1 thank you very much.

Towards the end of the book, although I do not take back any of the things I have previously said, I will add and make some changes in my opinions. David is not the worst character/person I have ever read about or met. He did change a bit at the end at the realization of his previous mistakes. Although he ‘repented’ and realized his mistakes were wrong, it does not excuse him from doing them, but it does help to start to repair the broken relationships that were caused because of it.

It seemed to me that letting Pheobe have a bit more freedom was a good thing for her and everyone for that matter. She did not constantly have to be looked after and it gave her a feeling of independence that she may have lacked.

The theme of the book could be many different things. The most prominent in my opinion would be that being deceitful with anyone but especially with the ones you love is never the right choice. Just think if David would have been totally honest and up front with Norah; their relationship may have flourished instead of it falling apart.

I don’t think that Phoebe should completly be on her own. Lets not forget they’re disability here. I think they should slowly be let more and more independent. Anything could go wrong with the two. Its a risky situation.

I think the theme was if you have twins, and one’s disabled. Don’t throw it away and never tell your wife.

Till the day I die. I will say that David is not a jerk as megan says. Megan, for once, just accept it. YOUR WRONG. I’M RIGHT. He tried to fix things
