The Great Gatsby – Blog 4- Per 1- Character Watcher

This post is going to be very short due to the fact that Gatsby was only in the one chapter before the twist of the story.

Before I get to my point I need to give some back round on Chapter 8.  In this chapter Mr. Wilson ( the husband of the dead Myrtle) wants to find who killed his wife.  He remembers seeing a car that looked like one Tom would know the owner of.  Wilson finds out that it was Gatsby’s car and thinks that Gatsby killed Myrtle and that Gatsby was the one having an affair with Myrtle.  While this is happening Gatsby tells Nick that he has never used his pool and as going to go for a swim in it.  Nick leaves and Gatsby is alone.  Mr. Wilson goes to Gatsby’s house and shots him.  Wilson then shots himself.

My point, Gatsby’s emotions in the beginning and the end were both the same.  He stated out feeling upset and lonely without Daisy and that is the exact same way how he felt when he died.  There was a time in the middle where he was happy.

Questions:

1) How do you think Gatsby was feeling at the end before his death?  (your opinion)

2) Do you think Daisy felt at all guilty for Gatsby’s death?

That’s an interesting question, Lauren. I’d have to say that Gatsby was feeling content before he died because he finally got to openly proclaim his love for Daisy and she said she loved him back. Even though she probably didn’t mean it, it still gave him hope for the future, so I guess that he would feel content. If I was in his position, I think that I would feel that way. I would probably also be feeling worried because my car just hit someone… Somehow I don’t think Gatsby was thinking about that though.

I’m going to go ahead and say that Daisy was probably NOT feeling guilty for Gatsby’s death at all. As I have mentioned several times on other comments, Daisy is a self-centered, shallow person. So I’m thinking that she really doesn’t care that much about Gatsby anyway. I doubt that she would ever leave Tom for Gatsby because of Tom’s status, regardless if she loved him or not. Besides that, because of the way I think Daisy’s mind works, she would try and convince herself that it was Tom’s fault that Gatsby got shot. Tom was the one that told Wilson it was Gatsby’s car, so I’m sure that Daisy would lie to herself about who’s fault it really was (but if you want to be technical, it was Gatsby’s fault for falling for her in the first place).

    1. It seems to me that Gatsby is kind of in a daze the few days before his death. I think that he is so overwhelmed at the thought of Daisy saying that she loved him that he doesn’t have a care in the world. Gatsby may have also been stressed out about what happened to Myrtle [his conscience] but since he really had no connection with her I don’t know that it made that huge an impact on his life.

    2. I agree with Erin. I don’t think that Daisy really cared all that much for Gatsby. She seems that she doesn’t TRULY care for anyone but herself and her own needs. I don’t think that Daisy would hold herself responsible for Gatsby’s death and I’m not sure how big an affect his death would have on her life. Gatsby’s “relationship” with Daisy didn’t really help him or mean anything, because I think that Gatsby was a little “starstruck” by Daisy. It’s kind of sad.
