ALL-IN Character Watcher Rebecca Krick
I am going to be honest with you guys because I wasn’t sure if Denn could actually win the Big Deal, I was holding my breath in those last couple pages…
Denn- A poker player who has been though it all: Heartache, starvation, sleeps deprivation, wins, loses, and encounters with bad people. Throughout the book we have gotten to known Denn and see him grow as a person. Denn use to read people and learn their signs for when they had a good or bad set of cards he has learned that using that method doesn’t always work and now thinks twice before he make a move. Denn is a smart person and even though he made be wasting his money away it doesn’t matter because people do what they have to do in life.
Did you honestly think Denn was going to win the tournament? If you had your doubts what were they and why?
Cattie- This girl was very confusing to us at the beginning of the book and we didn’t know if she was on the good side or bad side of Denn’s situation. Cattie Hart is a poker dealer who grew up with a slut for a mother and learned how to make money herself and get what she needed in life. Cattie Hart originally tricked Denn into a poker game with Morty and Frisk but in the end she helps Denn win the most money he has ever had.
What reaction did you have when you read Cattie had come back to the Big Deal wearing Denn’s gold necklace? And why?
Who do you think Cattie was helping more during the tournament Artie or Denn? Why?
Artie- The man with all the money during the poker tournament until Denn wins it all from him after a chip mix up. Artie thought he could win his own tournament but by then end of the night he was breaking his own rules and giving up quickly. When Cattie was dealing his table she was suppose to help him win but Cattie ended up making him lose and was sent away from his table and sat out the rest of the tournament. Did Artie have this bad luck coming for him? Is karma part of it?
After Denn won the Big Deal what do you predict happened to Artie?
Morty- This guy is a friend of Arties and helped out in the first set-up Denn was a part of. In the last chapter he has to call a shot for Denn or Artie and he picks Denn, this was very shocking! There weren’t that many people around and Morty was suppose to help Artie, what do you think happened to make Morty choose to play fair? This is unusual considering what we know about his character.
Jimbo- The main “narrator” throughout the story. He also played in the Big Deal tournament and went pretty far but left his table before the last few rounds started. We also had our doubts about Jimbo while reading the story but in the end Jimbo was just one of Denn’s friends trying to help him out.
Who was who?
What character completely changed from who they were at the beginning of the book to who they were at the end?
Who spoke Spanish over the phone with Denn?
What characters played at Lucy Lou’s?
Who drives a Lincoln Navigator?
Who drives a Camaro?
Who was your favorite character? WHY?
Who was your least favorite character? WHY?

I agree with you, Rebecca.
Denn- To answer your questions, I do think that Denn was going to win the tournament. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have made a very good ending to the story. Yet it would still have been a good tale either way.
Cattie- When I read about Cattie wearing Denn’s necklace, I was happy. Cattie had realized that she loves and cares for Denn. It was also the smart choice for her life to be with him anyway.
I think Cattie was helping Denn more. I’m pretty sure that Cattie had dealt Artie pocket aces 5 times in a row to anger him so he would get rid of her. That way she could help Denn, because in my mind I see Denn as a better player than Artie.
Artie- After Denn had won the big deal, I imagine Artie being in shock for awhile, and quitting poker forever. He now has zero friends.
WHO WAS WHO?
1. Cattie, she started off mean and not liking anyone. At the end of the story she had feelings for Denn and did what actually made her happy.
2. Jimbo did, I’m pretty sure it was just part of Jimbo’s quirky personality.
3. The old and experienced people.
4. Artie drives the Lincoln navigator.
5. Denn drives a Camaro.
6. Cattie was my favorite character. Even though she may be lost identity wise sometimes, she always thought about what she was doing and in the end came to realized what was right.
7. Artie was my least favorite character. I got angry at what he was trying to do and how he was trying to cheat out Denn. He is just an annoying and jealous old man that nobody really cares for.

I did not have any droughts, because I thought personally a fairy tale ending was going to occur. But if I had my droughts, then I would have to say I was afraid because of Artie. A guy in his own tournament, and he had Cattie who was supposed to cheat. That was the only persona that I thought could beat Denn.
I was very shocked, because it was weird. She came out of nowhere and actually helped Denn. She gave him the motivation to win and not give up.
WHO WAS WHO?
1. Cattie was the one because she at first had a bad rep. IT seemed that she was only cheating people for money, but in the end she did not cheat. She helped people and gave Denn the will power to never give up.
2. It had to be Jimbo, because he was the only one really talking to Denn.
3. I would have to say that they were some regular gamblers, and I think there were a couple World Series Poker guys there too.
4. Artie.
5. Denn.
6. I would have to say Jimbo was. I say this because he was someone who told the tale, and he made the ending. He did not let Denn get money, and he also did not tell the reader who won the tournament.
7. Artie was, because he broke his rules, made rude comments, and paid people to cheat for him. This is very wrong against my moral code.

Also what did you guys think about Mort’s and Frisk’s role in the end? I thought it was weird as they were not in the tournament.

Where was Frisk at the ending? I don’t even remember reading about him! =/

Denn- At the beggining of the tournament I thought Denn was going to win. He was the best player there. At the end knew he was going to lose. He had to little of chips to take out Artie.
Cattie- Cattie was helping Artie more. She did help Denn but he refused to cheat.
Artie- IF Denn won the Big Deal, Artie would probaly find another way to get back at him. Artie has done this through the whole entire book, get even.
Who was who?
1. Cattie and Denn
2. Jimbo
3. Some old people
4. Artie
5. Denn
6. Denn, he never gave up and tried heis hardest no matter what.
7. Artie, he cheated and didn’t have any moral standards.
