Abbey Stefanides- Post 4 :)

April 17th, 2009 — 10:28 pm

Final post guys. Lets make it a good one. I am really tired, and I saw a really good movie tonight. It was called State of Play, I highly recomend it. Now to blogging.

In this section, John Grady finally returns to Texas. When he returns, however, he finds out that his father has died. He then begins to cry. This is the first time in the whole entire novel that John Grady cries. Why is this? I mean I understand that now this means that he will never have the ranch, but I feel like he has been through a lot throughout this novel, and he is only crying now? Is this symbolizing something?

Then, John Grady proceeds saying that he doesn’t have a home, and he doesn’t know where his home is. It’s not in Mexico, and it’s not in America, or Texas. It seems as though John Grady is lost, not physically, but mentally. He just seems really torn, he doesn’t have his dream ranch, he doesn’t have his dream women, and he doesn’t know what to do with himself. That is a lot of doesn’ts. Why do you think that John Grady is “lost”? There are a lot of things that come into play, such as losing the ranch, and Alejandra. My final question for you is where do you think John Grady is going now? Why?

Have fun everyone! (:

Blog 4, The Time Machine, Period 1, Sonam Sherpa, Discussion Director

April 17th, 2009 — 09:58 pm

Well, first off I would like to make a statement; This SHOULD be our last and final blog, but thanks to Mr. Shank we have to blog on ANOTHER book. So, I would just like to ask everyone that is reading this blog to bow their heads for a moment and have a moment of silence for the death of your social lives. Ok, now I shall actually get to the information that I was planning to talk about. (By the way Mr. Shank, I realize that my previous comment was extrememly disrespectful, but it needed to be said).

The first topic that I would like to talk about would be the fact that H.G. Wells chooses not to give the characters in his books names, even the characters that are vital to the plotline. We may and probably already have had this discussion, but I would like to bring it up once more because near the end of the story right before the epilogue the narrator refers to the time traveller as Mr.——-, and that brings up this point again. Could the reason for this because he thinks that by not naming his characters he is helping the readers to classify these characters by their actions and their professions. This could be helpful in the way that instead of just remembering these characters by their names he helps us as the readers to start to classify his characters by what they do, and by doing this he is helping us to have a deeper understanding of each individual characters individual motives and intentions and therefore also helping to unveil certian parts of the larger plotline. I know that I have rambled on about this subject, but I just wanted to be clear. So now I would like to hear why you think H.G. Wells chooses not to name his characters, and if you say that you agree with me please build off of what I’ve already said.

Now to get to my second point, I find it interesting that the time traveller felt actual compassion towards Weena when she was lost in the woods after they were attacked by the group of morlocks. This is extremely interesting because this is the only sign that he was actually human that was shown throughout the whole book. What I mean by this is that in the portion before he met Weena we had only seen the side of him that was extremely sarcastic and a little bit of a smart donkey. Then when he had met Weena and had learned to like her he had seemed as if he loathed their company at some points but it was obvious that he enjoyed her company in this new unknown world. Then when he had finally lost Weena he had found that he was extremely angry at the whole race of the people that had taken Weena from her. Then when he had lost Weena and he was talking to the gentlemen at his house he had seemed more as if he didn’t care about what they thought, he was still grieving over what had happened to someone who was near and dear to him. This is also interesting because in the end when the narrator comes back to see the time traveller, the time traveller seems more willing to help him than he was before he had met Weena. So my question for you is, do you seriously think that Weena truly made a difference in the time traveller as a person? And if you do, please elaborate.

I would like to thank you in advance for responding to my blog. (Once again, I’m sorry Mr. Shank, but it was still needed to be said).

This is said by Caroline to Al when talking about the deed that Doro gave to Caroline. pg 228 “I’m happy right where i am. You’ll get bored with me.” “naw. That just makes us compatible honey,”

I agree with Caroline is right. That Al will get bored with her. He is used to moving around and not being tied down at all. This deed is making a commitment and will more likey bore him. Also, Phoebe having a disorder will not be able to move like Al wants.

What do you guys think that Al will do about this? Will he stay and be a father to Phoebe? or will he cut his ties and live free?

What do you think of Pauls actions?? Of him doing pot and destroying the dark room. Do you think that he will throw his life away? Do you think of David handled that was responsible??

Anil’s Ghost-Adam Lough, DD

April 17th, 2009 — 08:31 pm

In the final section of the book the author finally gets back and focuses on the main story. And thank god, because now we finally get to see what happens next in the story. The book comes back to story with Anil alone in the house with Sailor, after they have discovered Sailor’s identity. Sarath said that he would come back to her after looking more about who Sailor really was, but he never did and Anil became suspicious. Anil then returns to Colombo and in the process Sailor’s body gets stolen. Then, while giving the report on Sailor’s death, Sarath shows up and basically makes a fool out of Anil by discrediting her.

When you were reading this part of the book what was your reaction to the betrayal of Sarath?  Did it suprise you or were you expecting it?

When Anil leaves the building she meets Sarath, he tells Anil to take a van with his driver and go to their old laboratory in the ship. Reluctantly she accepts, after getting to the laboratory Anil discovers that Sarath had found Sailor’s body and had given it to her in the back of the van. Along with a tape recorder with Sarath explaining a way for Anil escape the country safely. Later Gamini discovers the body of his brother Sarath in the morgue, he had no doubt been tortured and killed because he helped Anil.

What is your opinion on the ending of the book?
And through out everything that has happened in the book what is your final opinion of Sarath?

The Memory Keeper’s Daughter- Character Watcher

April 17th, 2009 — 07:23 pm

In the last part of the book, both of the Henry children’s characteristics are emphasized and their personalities are made clear, as clear as any character in a book can be made! David also changes a bit and comes out and states the truth about a few topics, the largest of witch is when he admits to more people than Caroline that Pheobe is his daughter. Norah’s character is also made more clear in the last part of the book.

Pheobe- As the story progresses, Caroline does, in my opinion, a very good job in raising the young girl. She sticks to her original decision and does not send her to an institution at any time in her life. Pheobe grows up into a very nice, pleasant, and genuinely kind person. She is also very independent and does not let her disability get in the way of what she wants and needs to do to live a normal life.

Paul- This character is interesting, for even though he does not have a physical disability, he does struggle with other disabilities both mentally and emotionally. Paul becomes a bit depressed when his life is not going the way he had always planned it. In the end, though, he does come back to help his sister and “take her home.”

Dr. David Henry- Although he had struggled with many difficult decisions in the beginning, he comes back in the end and admits his wrongs to other people. One major step he is able to make in the end is to not only admit his wrongs to other people, but also realizes his wrongs himself and is able to admit them to himself. One aspect of the story I would like to take a closer look at is the title. I think that it is referring to Dr. David Henry and Pheobe. The questions for this last post will be very opinion based and thought provoking. HAVE FUN!

1. What are the memories that the story’s title is referring to?

2. Are there any other characters in the story the title could possibly referring to?

3. Who is the main character of the book? Are there more than one?

4. Who, in your opinion, is a better person: Norah or David? More parent-like?

House of Sand and Fog Summarizer Final Post!

April 17th, 2009 — 06:30 pm

So, when Les takes Behrani and his son Esmail to go to the county office to turn the house back over to Kathy, Esmail gets shot by two police officers when they do not continue to move along the sidewalk to the building and Esmail turns Les’ gun on him. The two police officers at the scene think that it was Behrani that was the instegator. So, they arrest Behrani but take Les with them too because they know who he is. Les goes to the police station and they ask him to explain what happend, and he tells them the whole truth about imprisoning the family in their house and threatening them.

Behrani finally gets to go to the hospital to see his son to find out from the doctor that Esmail has died. Behrani is so upset, that when he arrives back at his house, he strangles Kathy in an attempt to kill her. Then he goes into his bedroom where his wife is laying, and strangles her too. He quickly writes a note to his daughter and places it on the refrigerator. His last act is to kill himself by suffocation.

Les goes to jail in Redwood City and is in Protective Custody. He misses his family and wonder what has happened to Kathy. Kathy wakes up to find herself in the hospital. A police officer comes in and tells her she is under arrest for Aggravated Kidnapping, False Imprisonment, and Brandishing a weapon. She has them call Connie Walsh for her since she cannot speak because of Behrani strangling her. Connie comes and tells her all that had happened to Les and the Behrani family. Kathy is then sent to jail.

I have one question, why would Kathy be charged on these accounts even though Les was the one who has committed these crimes?

So, I thought that we would brush up on legal terms for the last post of educational vocab words:

Booked-(v.) to enter an offical charge agaisnt a suspect on a police register.

Commissary-(n.) a term used for a deputy.

Protective Custody-(n.) detention of someone by the police as protection agaisnt a possible attack or reprisal by someone.

FTO- stands for ‘Field Training Officer.’

The Time Machine Period 1 Connector Post 4 Taran Copenhaver

April 17th, 2009 — 06:10 pm

In this final section of the book we see that the time traveler goes into the far future in which the world has become almost a lifeless ith the air crisp and cold like on a mountain top. The sun has reached its second to last phase before it dies and now takes up the entire sky in a constant state of twilight. The time traveler goes back to his time after getting sick from the cold and the silence. Just before he left he felt a silence like all life was gone. He was all alone and everything had gone. This relates to Sponge Bob. In the episode were Squidward time travels to get away from sponge bob and Patrick he first finds himself in a distant future were there were still people that were like his own, like the Time Traveler and the Eloi and Morlocks. Then Squidward goes to a distant past were primitive and strange things lived, just like the giant crabs in the future. Squidward finally goes one last time to a time were there is no life. He is totally alone and gets a scared feeling, just like the Time Traveler on his last little jump. He was alone, no life. Eventually they both get back home and are safe again although the time traveler is not home very long.

This leads me to my question what do you think of this emptiness? Is there really going to be an empty time without life or are we going to continue in circles and regenerate it? Is this emptiness real today?

Dan Black-Dracula, Summarizer

April 17th, 2009 — 05:21 pm

Van Helsing and Seward go and investigate the deaths of the children. They see that they have the same markings on their necks as Lucy. The two visit Lucy’s grave and her corpse is gone. Seward says it was a grave robber, but Helsing says to keep watch. He obviously suspects Dracula. Seward sees this white streak go by in the morning and then they see a child laying there, but Seward still thinks that Lucy is not responsible for anything. He changes his mind when they see Lucy returned to her coffin, beautiful and restored. They believe that she is ‘un-dead’ and needs to be killed, again; a stake through her heart. They meet with Holmwood, who is first opposed, but then agrees to the task.

In the next chapter, the group goes to the tomb. They find it empty, and they hide and wait. They see a figure come and it is carrying a child and has fresh blood. It is Lucy and she runs back into her coffin when the wafers are removed. Holmwood, after seeing this, decides that they need to do the ritual. Helsing thinks to himself that he will reunite with the men to discuss the terrible things they need to do.

In chapter 16, Helsing says that he wants Mina and Jonathan to stay with him. Renfield has been calm and he thinks it is relavent to Dracula’s location. Seward and Mina switch journals and read them. Jonathan looks at the earth that was shipped from Transylvania. He is curious where they all went. Mina says that Jonathan has recovered from his visit from Dracula’s castle. Holmwood is also very shaken still about Lucy’s death.

Next, Mina visits Renfield and has everything in order when Helsing arrives. He sits everyone down and tells the story of the ‘un-dead.’ He describes them very badly, but also describes their many weaknesses. He then describes how to kill Dracula. Renfield askes to leave when the whole company comes to see him, and Seward denies his request.

In chapter 19, Seward and some men go to look for the 50 boxes of earth. They find 29, and there are rats so they have to call in dogs to kill them. He then asks to Renfield after he returns to the asylum. Helsing wants an interview, but Renfield refuses to cooperate. Mina writes in her diary about seeing strange things in her room, and waking up to an open window, when she knows she closed it. She describes the white cloud and figure. She also rationalizes it as part of her dream.

In the next chapter, Harker finds the locations of the missing boxes. They are wondering how they are going to break into the houses in a high populated area. They talk to Renfield, and some of his opoinions change, but he says he wants life. The next night they hear a scream, and they find Renfield covered in blood in his cell.

In chapter 21, Renfiled admits that Dracula visited him a lot. He says that he got angry and then Dracula bit him. He then ran off into the asylum. Dracula is found with Jonathan unconscious and drinking blood from Mina’s chest. They show him a wafer, and he runs away. The count has torn apart their study, but they did keep copies in a safe of their paperwork. At night Mina says that Dracula threatened to kill her husband if she made a sound, and he drank her blood. He said it was not the first time.

Finally, in chapter 22, Harker writes in his journal. They are about to go to Dracula’s house and Haker puts wafers in Mina’s room. He touches her head and she calls herself ‘unclean’ when she bleeds.

House of Sand and Fog- Pd 1- post 4 Connector…Brittany Miller

April 17th, 2009 — 02:21 pm

Well, in this last section, there are many different things that happend in this last section. For one, Kathy and Les both go to jail. Berhani’s son got killed by Les. Another thing that happend was that the Berhani family committed suicide. This was a very depressing book and there are really no connections that could be made with this book. The only connection that I have been able to make throughout this whole book is the fact that it is very similar to a soap opera. This is the only connection that I am able to make throughout this whole book. That is pretty sad, I know. Well thank goodness this book is overwith…Mr. Shank you do have an interesting taste in books.
