The Time Machine Illuminator Per 1 Post 3

Colin Easter

The beginning of this week’s reading provided an interesting possibility as to the location of the future events and how they came to be.  On page 52, the time traveller says, “All the old constellations had gone from the sky, however: that slow movement which is imperceptible in a hundred human lifetimes, had long since rearranged them in unfamiliar groupings.”  Since all of these stars have moved far away, the earth must have moved also.  The time traveller also says, “And amid all these scintillating points of light one bright planet shone kindly and steadily like the face of an old friend.”  The time traveller doesn’t say anything more about this planet.  However, I think that it is earth.  The time machine stops in the location that it starts.  The time traveller made this clear by telling us how he worried about stopping inside a solid object.  If the location stays the same and the earth moves around the sun, the time machine probably wouldn’t land on earth.  The time traveller landed on a different planet in the future.  This society could have been formed as a space colony.  This would explain the underground ventilation system.  It could also explain the war between the Eloi and the Morlocks.  If they lost communication with earth, they could have fought against each other if they were from different countries.  The similar locations of the rivers that the time traveller mentions would be a coincidence.  The same rivers wouldn’t be there after around 800,000 years, would they?  The museum could be a collection of fossils that they brought from earth, showing how the colony could preserve things (the fossils would have to be extremely old by then).   What do you think of this possibility that they are on a different planet than earth?  Is there any more evidence supporting it?  Is there any evidence against it?

Wow Collin, you are much more observant than I am. I read that whole section and I did not think anything of it. First of all you might be correct in saying that they are on a different planet, and this was just subtle foreshadowing. What I took that friendly planet as was the North Star. I just thought that the author was calling it a planet for no specific reason. I assumed this because he made it sound like that light did not move. In our current night sky the north star is our only one that does not move (or technically moves so little that it won’t be noticed for a couple million years). Finally, sorry but no I can not think of anything else to support, or go against your theory. I thought for almost 10 minutes and I still could not think of anything.

Well, Easter Bunny, I would just like to say that that comment was extremely Mr. Shankish of you. I personally would love to think that this is the true situation and that we will not end up evolving into inept, helpless, creatures, or barbaric, violent, canibals, but it is highly unlikely. Although, if your theory is true then there are some more factors to incorporate into this possible situation.

For example, if the time machine stops where it originally started, just in a different time, then what would happen if the time traveller stopped travelling in the middle of the year when the Earth had not yet made a full circle? Are you then saying that he would have ended up in space, but you said that the time traveller knew of this possibility. So therefore wouldn’t the time traveller have prepared for the unexpected? Also, if it were on another planet, which one would it be, in our time there are no other planet that we know of that can sustain life of our kind.

Personally I too would like to agree with your theory, but sadly it is most likely incorrect. The reason why is because the time traveller probably ended up doing something to prepare for this possibility. Sorry.

Well, I do not think that they are on a different planet. When the time machine moves through time it does not move just the time moves. When the time traveler was moving through time, he was seeing the basment that he started out in age and later on being reconstructed into other things before he made it to this time period. It is possible that the stars can change and the weather can change because the stars do move and the Earth wobbles in its rotation causing different different weather patterns to occur. Finally if they were on a different planet how is the air perfect for human breathing and the water perfect to ours, the gravitation would be different on other planets too, sorry Colin.

I also do not htink they are on a different planet, butit is a possibility just not likely. When he first travels through time for a few hours he stays in the same spot just time moves. So i believe that he stayed in the same place just traveled 800,000 years.
