Blog 3, The Time Machine, Period 1, Sonam Sherpa, Discussion Director

April 11th, 2009 — 07:37 pm

Well, in this section of the book we start to see more of the Morlocks and figure out some key differences between the Eloi and the Morlocks. Some of the differences would be as follows. We see that the Morlocks are nocturnal and the Eloi aren’t, also the Morlocks are carnivores and the Eloi are strict herbivores, and also the Eloi are more layed back and relaxed and the Morlocks are more violent. So now that I have already recapped what you all already know, I will now get to the stuff that I’m supposed to be blogging about.

In this section of the book we start to see more of the Time Traveller’s extremely interrogative attitude. I do realize that I’m restating what I’ve already said in my prior blog, but now after reading this portion of the book I’m starting to see more of this than before. The most likely reason for this would be that now he is finding the deeper, more complex parts of the lives of the Morlocks and the Eloi and because of this he is trying to link it to the life that he knew before. The interesting thing about his curious attitude is that he realizes that all of his predictions are most likely incorrect, which is odd because even he realizes the fact that he is exceedingly intelligent. So my question for you is, do you think that the reason why the time traveller second guesses himself? Could this be because he doubts how smart he is, and if he is as smart as he can be? Please give me your input.

Now I would like to ask what you think about the two species, the Morlocks and the Eloi. Now that you have learned more about the Morlocks and the Eloi, what do you think of the species? Do you think that the theory that the Time Traveller has thought up is close to accurate? Now that we’ve seen that the Morlocks seem to be more violent do you think that this way of evolution is more likely than the Eloi because of the violence in the nature of every human? Now I would like to ask you, if you could think up a form of evolution for mankind in the year that the book takes place, could you tell me? (this is simply for amusement, and to see how your ideas on the future would differ from H.G. Wells’, and what that shows of your personality and morals.)

Anil’s Ghost Character Watcher Post 3

April 11th, 2009 — 06:24 pm

I was lol’ing pretty hard at Lacrosse earlier when Kody Bell mentioned Blogs.  Woops, forgot about that one.  Anyway, it looks like most people forgot to Blog this weekend anyway.  There were only three pages of blogs as compared to the normal  6.  I was worried, but the Lacrosse team won, JV and Varsity, so I figured it would all work out.  Ok.  On to Bloggin…

Due the scarcity of characters that can be examined, I am going to reinspect Anil.  In this section, Anil continues to struggle with the genocide taking place in Sri Lanka.  Sarath has not yet betrayed her, so I guess my predictions about him were wrong.  Anil and Sarath travelled all over to try and reconstruct Sailors face.   Once his face was reconstructed, Anil seems to gain some of the confidence that she lost through the whole searching process.  Anil started off strong, with a strong will to find Sailor’s killer.  She still has that drive for justice, the endless killing and civil war of Sri Lanka is begins to take its toll on her.  I am begining to wonder wether Anil will be able to continue to suffer through the horrors that she has been routinely witnessing.  Then again, this is a book, and like I always say, in a book something has to happen.  Anil will most likely be fine, and able to continue.  She and Sarath will find Sailors killer, because the book needs a purpose.  My question for y’all is which life do you think Anil perferred, her old life in Sri Lanka, or her life in America.  Throughout this section there are suggestions that Anil liked it at her home.  What do you guys think?

okay well im going to start with chapter 5 because we all read to different spots last time

  •      At the start of this chapter the time traveler is examining this future world and its people. He comes up with this idea of communism.

How does communism represent how society of the Elio function?

  • The time traveler finds out that the time machine has been moved and is in a frenzy. He wakes up some of the creatures and  scares them but eventually calms down and reasons with them on where the machine may be.
  • In the morning  the time traveler believes the machine may be in the statue. He asks the creatures how to open it but he gets weird reactions. He decides to be patient
  • The time traveler rescues a creature in the river. Her name is Weena, they immediately become friends.
  • In the morning he sees a new kind of creature, a “morlock.”
  • These new creatures live underground and can only come out at night. They are ape like creatures.
  • The time traveler decides he needs to enter the morlock’s world to be able to find the time machine
  • The time traveler goes down a well and gets frightened by morlocks , but all he has to do is alight a match to get them to go away. They are afraid of light.
  • He gets attacked by morlocks and barely escapes.
  • After his experiences with the morlocks he trys to come up with new theories about this future world.
  • His new theory is that the morlocks were forced underground by ancestors of the Eloi, but the Eloi have grow weak and so the morlocks are gaining power back.
  • The time traveler believes that both the Eloi and the Morlocks are what has become of man.
  • The time traveler and weena try to find a safe place to sleep that night because the time traveler fears he has upset the morlocks.

Do you think after the time travelers experience that he will try to go into the morlock’s world again?

  • The Time traveler and Weena go to the Palace of Green Porclin which is a actually a ruined museum.
  • He gets some matches and camphor and runs out.
  • He hears morlocks. He quickly breaks off a lever off of a machine and him and weena exit the museum.

The Time Machine Illuminator Per 1 Post 3

April 11th, 2009 — 03:56 pm

Colin Easter

The beginning of this week’s reading provided an interesting possibility as to the location of the future events and how they came to be.  On page 52, the time traveller says, “All the old constellations had gone from the sky, however: that slow movement which is imperceptible in a hundred human lifetimes, had long since rearranged them in unfamiliar groupings.”  Since all of these stars have moved far away, the earth must have moved also.  The time traveller also says, “And amid all these scintillating points of light one bright planet shone kindly and steadily like the face of an old friend.”  The time traveller doesn’t say anything more about this planet.  However, I think that it is earth.  The time machine stops in the location that it starts.  The time traveller made this clear by telling us how he worried about stopping inside a solid object.  If the location stays the same and the earth moves around the sun, the time machine probably wouldn’t land on earth.  The time traveller landed on a different planet in the future.  This society could have been formed as a space colony.  This would explain the underground ventilation system.  It could also explain the war between the Eloi and the Morlocks.  If they lost communication with earth, they could have fought against each other if they were from different countries.  The similar locations of the rivers that the time traveller mentions would be a coincidence.  The same rivers wouldn’t be there after around 800,000 years, would they?  The museum could be a collection of fossils that they brought from earth, showing how the colony could preserve things (the fossils would have to be extremely old by then).   What do you think of this possibility that they are on a different planet than earth?  Is there any more evidence supporting it?  Is there any evidence against it?

House of Sand and Fog, Post 3, Period 1, Kortney Mann

April 11th, 2009 — 03:55 pm

Ok, recap of section 1; Kathy losses her house to the county and Behrani buys it. Kathy’s husband left her, and Behrani quit is second job. Behrani finds Kathy talking to his wife, and he threatens her. Lester impersonates a cop to try to get Kathy’s house back. Kathy tries to kill herself, but Behrani finds her.

So in the section we have just read we learn that Behrani takes Kathy to his house and his wife cares for her. They leave her to take a shower and get cleaned up, but after a period of time she still hasn’t come out so they go to check on her. They find her lying in the tub unconscious from overdosing on some pills. Soon after that Lester comes and hold the family hostage in their house because he saw Kathy’s car parked at their house when she was suppose to be at the cabin with Lester. The family gets locked in the bathroom for some time. Kathy wakes-up to find that the family is locked in the bathroom and that Lester is also there. Behrani persuades Lester to let them out to eat, but then Lester makes Behrani call the county so he can sell it back to them in order for Kathy to get the house back.

Questions:

1.      Do you think that Kathy will ever stop trying to kill herself because she has already tried                  2 times one at her old house with Behrani and his family there?

2.      Do you think that Lester should get some type of legal action taken against him for holding the family hostage?

3.      Should Behrani sell the house back to the county that is if he wasn’t being forced by Lester?

4.      Do you think that after all that has happened Kathy will still love Lester? Should she still love Lester in your opinion?

5.      Do you think that Kathy should just forget about that house and find a new one?

Okay, I have a very odd set of questions this time around, so do not yell at me! This first passage of the story is from the fifteenth chapter from Dr. Seward’s Diary on September 27:

I answered: “Do not press me too hard at once. I am willing to accept. How will you do this bloody work?”

“I shall cut off her head and fill her mouth with garlic, and I shall drive a stake through her body.” It made me shudder to think of so mutilating the body of the woman whom I had loved.

The next passage is also from chapter fifteen but from September 29:

“Agreed!” said Arthur; “that is only fair. And now that the pournarlers are over, may I ask what it is we are to do?”

“I want you to come with me, and to come in secret, to the churchyard at Kingstead.”

Arthur’s face fell as he said in an amazed sort of way:-

“Where poor Lucy is buried?” The Professor bowed. Arthur went on: “And when there?”

“To enter the tomb!” Arthur stood up.

“Professor, are you in earnest; or it is some monstrous joke? Pardon me, I see that you are in earnest.” He sat down again, but i could see that he sat firmly and proudly, as one who is on his dignity. There was a silence until he asked again:-

“And when in the tomb?”

“To open the coffin.”

“This is too much!” he said, angrily rising again. “I am willing to be patient in all things that are reasonable; but in this-this desecration of the grave-of one who—” He fairly choked with indignation.

My first question is not a question as so much a statment (Actually it seems to be more like instructions or a request). Both Arthur and Dr. Seward have strong feelings for Lucy. Compare and contrast their opinions on opening Lucy’s grave. Look back in the story for more details.

My second question is why do both men act the way they do? If you were this type of situation, how would you react and why. Give me opinions with your thoughts and with facts from the story, please.

There’s my blog for you!

All the Pretty Horses Pd. 3 Connector Paula Ferrara

So, I think we can all agree that this part of the book is extremely negative after the previous chapter. With that said, I would like to connect this section of the story to a previous book that we all read, Night by Elie Wiesel. Night is a memoir of the Holocaust and follows the author’s struggle for survival with his father in the various labor camps they were held captive in. Jews were seen as lowlifes to the Nazis; they were held captive in the worst conditions and many were shot just for the heck of being shot. Many turned on each other and fought over as little as a crumb of bread.  But with promises to stay alive for each other, the author and his father survived some of the harshest conditions of the war. Sadly at the closing of their captivity, his father died.

John Grady and Rawlins seem to have the same relationship during their imprisonment as Elie Wiesel and his father had during theirs. Like the Wiesels they are imprisoned for being considered lowlifes, in this case horse thieves. They are held in disgusting conditions, Blevins is shot without a fair trial, and their own fellow prisoners fight constantly; they themselves ar ewounded a lot during these fights. However they always promise each other that they will stick together no matter what. Just like Elie Wiesel and his father.

At the end of their captivity their promise to stay together is forgotten as Rawlins decides that he wants to go back home and John Grady decides he wants to find Alejandra. This is similar to how Elie Wiesels father dies and he is left to survive; they go their seperate ways. Would you have stuck to your friend if you were in the same predicament as John Grady and Rawlins or would you have gone for the whole ‘every man for himself’ kind of approach? Also, after everything they’ve been through, do you think it’s a good idea that the friends split up now? And did their split take you by surprise? Because it did for me.

The Great Gatsby: Connector: Post 3

April 11th, 2009 — 03:23 pm

A lot happened in chapters 5, 6, and 7.  Daisy and Gatsby grew much closer, and Tom affirmed his suspicians about Daisy and Gatsby loving one another.  These chapters reminded me of an old movie where there are two guys fighting to win the love of the same girl.  Between Gatsby having the parties to lure Daisy, Gatsby going out to eat with Tom and Daisy, Gatsby having tea with them, and going into the city with them.  Tom is just trying to decide if Gatsby and Daisy do love each other.  I can’t decide at this point who Daisy likes.

From how chapter 7 ended, do you think that Daisy likes Gatsby more than Tom?

The Great Gatsby – Per. 1 – Character Watcher

April 11th, 2009 — 02:49 pm

Over Chapters 5, 6 and 7 we see a change in Gatsby.  In chapter 6 we learn about Gatsby’s past.  We learn that Gatsby’s real name was James Gatz and that he worked for a man on his yacht.  The man gave Gatz the new names Jay Gatsby and that name stuck with  him.  When the man died he left most of his money to Gatsby and this is when Gatsby’s poor life turned around.  What do you think of Gatsby’s past? Do you think he was happier when he was poor why of why not?

In chapter 7 we see the most change in Gatsby.  Tom and Daisy go to one of Gatsby’s parties and Daisy doesn’t have a good time.  Gatsby then stops throwing parties and fires all of his workers so the rumors about him will stop.  Do you think Gatsby should give up everything for Daisy?

Also in Chapter 7 Gatsby and Tom meet and talk.  Gatsby tells Tom that Daisy loves him and not her husband.  Tom gets angry and the relationship between Gatsby and Tom becomes worse.  Do you think that Gatsby should have confronted Tom about Daisy?

Finally Daisy and Gatsby are driving together in Gatsby’s car.  Daisy is driving and she hits Myrtle ( Tom’s other woman) with the car.  Gatsby later tells Nick that he will take the blame for the accident.  Do you think that Gatsby should take the blame?

We so in the last chapters that Gatsby has changed and not really for the good.  He has become very obsessed with Daisy and will seem to stop at nothing to win her back.  Do you think that Gatsby has changed for the better or for the worse, why or why not?

Questions:

1) What do you think of Gatsby’s past? Do you think he was happier when he was poor why of why not?

2) Do you think Gatsby should give up everything for Daisy?

3) Do you think that Gatsby should have confronted Tom about Daisy?

4) Do you think that Gatsby should take the blame?

5) Do you think that Gatsby has changed for the better or for the worse, why or why not?

All-in Period 3 Alexander Berresford DD

April 11th, 2009 — 02:36 pm

To get this discussion going I want to talk about Denn and how he is holding up, Cattie’s better insight of her life, and finally the big tournament.

We now see that Denn has to enter this “Big Deal” tournament so he can defeat Artie.  He wants to do this because of Cattie.  He loves Cattie and it seems that Artie does to.   If he can win the tournament then Artie might leave her alone and it could allow for Denn to possibly go out with Cattie again.  The only problem is money.  As we go through his struggle to get money we find out that he is thinking of his family.  Why do you think he is doing so?  I think it is because Denn is coming back to reality, as he sees that Poker is his job.  I now see that Poker can be a life/job for people because it is not really gambling.  Denn shows this as he describes people throwing away their money.  Really Denn is investing his money like a business would.  What do you think of this?  I think that he is right and now he sees thediffernce between a game and a job, which casues him to see how love can be compatible with his job.  What if Denn were to continue his poker life and start to have a better relationship with his family again?  I think that this is a possibility as it seems that both Cattie and he have been thinking of love and family.

Pete has given a more interesting insight on Cattie’s life.  She is extravagant with her lifestyle, buying high-endjewelery, and gourmet meals.  which has lead to her bad childhood, with her non supporting mother.  As a child she would avoid her mother because her mother was always finding new men that would provide her with gifts in money to live.  Cattie did not like this and we see that it has impacted Cattie as she is trying to make a better life.  If Cattie had a more supporting mom then she might have had a better life then the one she has now.  What do you think of the matter?  Also, I think that what Cattie has now is pretty amazing, since she was raised by a drunken mother.  Finally, we see that she has feelings for Denn.  She is always thinking of family, which is including Denn.  Do you think that this will have a major impact in the end?  Will she have a life that will be more suitable to a normal lifestyle outside of the casino?  I think that her and Denn will have a relationship and have a normal lifestyle, with her either leaving the game forever or they both will take over the casinos.

Lastly I would like to talk about the tournament.  It is taking place at the King’s Crossings and it is Artie’s tournament.  Denn has just received money from Cattie and is going to enter, as he had already been rejected by Jimbo.  Does Denn have any friends?  Was Jimbo using him?  Is Jimbo really the bad guy in the story?  I think that Jimbo is the bad guy because of the fact that he seemed afraid that Denn would defeat him.   So he did not give him any money and I think it is complicating the ending.  I wonder how it will end.  Do you guys have any ideas?  What if it is in the finals between Artie, Denn, Morty, Frisk, and Jimbo?  Then we will have Cattie dealing.  Who would she choose to win?  Would she play it fair?  I think that she would play it fair, and then Denn would win as he would play not to just win, but to prove that love can be compatible with the game.  I also think that after Denn wins the family relationship will begin, and then he will return to Cattie. .  Or he will stay and take over all the casinos.  What is some of your guy’s thoughts?  There are plenty of possibilities that could occur, but which one do you think has the better “odds.”

-Alex

P.S. Mr. Shank I thought the blogs were only due at 5 and I am still unsure about the time they are due.  Also there was no way for Leah to blog, because she does not have the book.  Rebecca has her book.
