All the Pretty Horses, Character Watcher, Kody Bell

In the third chapter of the novel I am again going to look at John Grady.  In this chapter John Grady and Rawlins are both hurt by a man who slashes both of their stomachs.  John Grady then kills the man, he feels remorse which Rawlins scolds him for when they are both released from prison.  When they are released Rawlins decided to go back to Texas, but John Grady decides he is going to stay in Mexico and go back to the ranch to retrieve the horses and try and win Alejandra.  This brings me to my first question which is:  Do you think that John Grady is making the right decision or should he go back to Texas with Rawlins?

My next question is who do you think hired the man to kill Rawlins and John Grady?  John Grady knew that the man was a proffesional killer and that someone hired him to kill them.  Do you think it was Alejandra’s aunt or maybe her father?  Why do you think they wanted to take such extreme measures to get rid of the two.  I mean they were already in jail weren’t they?

If John Grady goes back to Texas, he’s faced with the life that he originally ran away from. If he stays in Mexico, he has a slim chance at making a life for himself and finding love in the process. In short he can take the safe road or take a chance. Personally I think he should go after Alejandra and stay in Mexico. A life of searching for what you want is better than a life of caution and regret.

I really do not have a clue as to who hired that man to kill John Grady and Rawlins, but I don’t think it was Alejandra’s aunt or her father. Her aunt is not that cruel and her father, as far as we know, trusted John Grady and Rawlins. Who ever wanted them dead probably thought that even though they were in jail, there was still the possibility of them getting out. The safest thing to do would be to erase them from the face of the Earth completely.

Okay Paula but who would want them dead? Nobody knows them in Mexico besides the people on the ranch, somebody had to have a reason.

I see Kody’s point in this, Paula. There really is only about two people who could possibly want them dead in Mexico. I think that there is a lot that has been going on outside of jail that we are not informed of yet. Perhaps Allejandra’s aunt was not even really the one who bailed them out. Maybe it was actually Allejandra impersonating her. I believe that it absolutely has to have been either the aunt or the father who tried to kill Grady and Rawlins.

I think that John Grady is making the right decision. I always say, “If you have dreams and desires go after them and don’t hold back.” This is exactly what John Grady is doing. He is going after what he wants and I think that is great! Now when he comes over obstacles, if he tries to overcome them, I know that he really wants this, but if he doesn’t then maybe I am thinking to big of John Grady.

I am going to have to go with Shaun and Kody on this one. There are only so many people in Mexico that actualy know these two boys/men. I liked how Shaun said that Alejandra could have be impersonating her. I think that is a very good inference. Now I might be totally wrong on this one, but what if it were the guys that Rawlins and John Grady stole the horse back from? Do you remember? I don’t know. Just throwing that out there.
