The Memory Keepers daughter Discussion directer post 2 Derrick Truax
Grrr, I completely forgot too do this yesterday.
Okay, lets get this discussion going. So, what are you thoughts on Norah and the whole overprotective thing? Do you guys think she is overprotective solely because of the supposed death of Phoebe or is it just her. Where do you guys drawn the line with what is overprotective and what isn’t?
Secondly, what are your thoughts on Norah and Dr. Henry drifting apart? For more discussion… it seems that marriages are falling apart more and more in today’s society; do you feel this relates to Norah and Dr. Henry?
You know Mr. Shank I never knew DD was supposed to answer his own questions…

I think being overprotective is not always a negative aspect of parenting. As I mentioned in another comment, I believe that Norah thinks she is partially to blame for the “death” of Pheobe and she wants to control the life of her “only” child. Because of this, her maternal instincts play a large role in the parenting of Paul. I do not know if there is a set ‘line’ that is able to be drawn between protective and overprotective. I do believe that Norah is being overprotective in a positive way.
With the entire marriage concept, I do think the author based the story and characters off of the world today. The weakening of the relationship is caused I believe by both of their own problems which sometimes become one in a marriage. Both of them have faults they have brought to the relationship which have caused it to weaken and eventually may completely break.

Now this is an intense discussion… Anyway, I still don’t quite understand how Norah could possibly blame herself for the death of Phoebe. As a result, I still believe that Norah is just one of those people that is naturally overprotective. I think Norah being so overprotective is a bad thing, I believe there must be a balance of how protective a parent is.
I also think that the marriage between Dr. Henry and Norah is a reflection of marriages today in the real world. Couples drifting apart is a common thing today and anyway, it makes the story slightly more interesting.

I dissagree with Megan strongly. Theres is a difference between caring about your child and watching out for him than being way to protective and not letting the child do anything. At the one party she wanted him to take off a necklace because she thought the necklace could hurt him! Whats it going to do, attack him???
Also I don’t understand why David and Norah drifting apart is Interesting. There is always a conflict between them, and I think it makes the story negative.

Derrick-Good questions. See, you can be a productive member of the group!
To the rest: Get more involved. I still am not seeing the dialogue I want to see. Megan, people disagreed with you, counter (politely of course). And Brett, learn to spell disagree!
