The Great Gatsby: Connector: Post 2
In Chapter 4 when Nick, Gatsby and Meyer Wolfshiem go out for lunch, some unexpected ideas of Gatsby comes up. As Wolfshiem continues talking with Nick about Gatsby and his wealth, he suggests that Gatsby did not come about all of it honestly. Wolfshiem leaves Nick with the impression that he and Gatsby may be involved with a certain “underground” organized crime. This idea reminds me a bit of the mafia. The mafia do favors for people and expect things in return. If you ask me, that sounds like the kind of crime, if any, Gatsby would be involved in. What do you guys think?
What kind of organized crime do you think that Gatsby is involved in with Wolfshiem, if any?
P.S.: Where page are Megan’s and Alyssa’s posts on? I can’t find them. Thanks.

Hmm this is a very intersting question. Like I put on Alyssa’s post, we see that Gatsby asks Nick to join his business but he won’t tell him what it is. This leads me to think that he maybe does have an undercover crime going on. Yet Gatsby seems like such an honorable and honest man. We really don’t know him yet and maybe it is all and act. When I read about Wolfshiem and his rigging of the world series in 1919 I did wonder if Gatsby was involoved and why he would be friends with a man like Wolfshiem becuase like I said before he seems like such a nice person. There is definatly more to Gatsby than what we see know. It could be a crime or group but I guess for now we all need to read and find out =]

P.S. I found Alyssa’s post, but I also didn’t find Megan’s.

OK, so I know I kind of forgot to comment on these and that this is really late but I’m bored so I’m going to comment anyway. I was going to mention the World Series thing but Lauren already said that so I’ll just continue on from what she wrote. Seeing as the World Series is baseball, I’m thinking that maybe Wolfsheim isn’t the mofia but rather a bookie. So my thought is that Gatsby is possibly involved with gambling and throwing games. He certainly has enough money to give out, even if he does lose a lot of it on bets.
I think it is possible that Wolfsheim is involved with the New York mafia because he does seem like a shady person, but I don’t think Gatsby would be so stupid as to get involved with that. Plus, Gatsby does seem like a genuine person and I doubt he would want to have anything to do with something like that. (Note to Lauren: I disagree with what you said about Gatsby being honest. Even Nick is suspicous of what Gatsby tells him in the car ride to New York.)
By the way, if you guys don’t know about the 1919 World Series fix I would suggest watching the movie Eight Men Out. It’s an older movie (it’s on VCR) but definetly worth watching. Another random fact: some of the White Sox players from the series are in Field of Dreams, which is another great movie.

By the way – Megan said she’s been having problems logging in to post, so that’s why you might not be able to find her blogs.

Erin-Nice addition!
Maddie-Explore your connections further and expand upon them. This one has some significance, but it is entirely to superficial at the moment. Also, you need to ask better questions.
Shank out.
