Dracula Illuminator Jenni Kantor

Well, I have two paragraphs/passages for you, my lovely group. The first one is as follows:

The room was dark, so I could not see Lucy’s bed; I stole across and felt for her. The bed was empty. I lit a match an found that she was not in the room. The door was shut, but not locked, as I had left it. I feared to wake her mother, who has been more than usually ill lately, so I threw on some clothes and got ready to look for her.

This passage was in the very beginning of the chapter but it made me wonder early on and I could not get it out of my head. My question for you is what do you think that Mina thought when she discovered that her best and closest friend was missing from her bed? Do you think that she had a reason for thinking this? Explain your thoughts.

If you read the rest of that paragraph, there is an interesting situation. Mina finds Lucy passed out. What do you think that she was thinking at this point? Explain your reasoning please. By the way: Please excuse me from refraining to write the entire paragraph. It is in the eighth chapter and the first paragraph in the second entry. Look it up before answering!

There’s my blog for you.

You’re right Jen it is a very interesting paragraph to comment on, although the entire paragraph is worth writing because it contains a lot of detail that is needed in the answer to your question. Mina most likely was shocked and worried to find her friend not in her bed and thinking where can Lucy go, when she knows it’s really late at night and her mother might worry if she found out. Mina probably thought at the moment that she was out of the house again and could be in danger of hurting herself. Mina had a reason for thinking this because Lucy starts to sleepwalk, as we know in the seventh chapter and she becomes very agitated, she doesn’t realize what she is doing. What really shocked me was how Mina could think straight about her friends outfit while being worried…

I don’t get what you mean about when she passes out, like when she was out by herself or when she’s in her house?

When Mina finds Lucy passed out, she is probably thinking that she should make Lucy see a doctor as soon as possible. Most likely because, Lucy seems to be really weak when she has been eating fairly right, and tired most of the time when she gets her sleep. Lucy forgets what goes on around her, which just causes Mina to worry more and more about her.

Mina is obviously worried. Somewhere in the story (I don’t remember where) it says that Lucy used to sleepwalk when she was a child. Mina is probably very depressed as she hasn’t seen Jonathan for a long time and she cares a lot about Lucy. Lucy is the typical damsel in distress, and Mina has to rescue her. Mina probably calms down a bit when she realizes Lucy is sleepwalking again.

As for passing out, it might seem to Mina that Lucy just fell asleep again. Mina probably thought that she had gotten hurt somehow, remember Mina thinks that the small hole in Lucy’s neck is from the safety pin.

I liked the passages you chose from the story Jenny. Kianat is right though, the rest of the paragraph would help to answer the question. Mina was in distress that Lucy was not in her bed. She was worried about her. Sleep walking is a funny thing though, Step Brothers proves that. You can’t really control what you are doing and it can really scare other people.

Mina tries to rationalize the situation to herself by saying the safety pin was the pricks in her neck. She ignored that fact that they were from a vampire. Bad move on her part.
