All-In Character Watcher: Rebecca Krick

The characters in this story have changed drastically over the past 10 chapters we read this week.

Cattie: at first she did not seem so bad; she was having fun with Denn and liked him.  As we have now found out she was part of scheme that makes Denn lose most of his money.  Cattie is also a thief because in chapter 10 she stole a pair of earrings from a jewelry store, but ends up giving them away because they do not make her red hair well enough.

·         Do you think that is the only reason she gave those earring away to the guy in the parking lot or are we still misjudging Cattie, did she feel guilty about taking them?   Could she have double identities or pretending to do this whole scheme for something else?

·         Cattie also did not know Denn when she first agreed to the man and said she would try to “fall in love” with him in chapter 16.

·         Why do you think the mystery man wanted Cattie to fall in love with Denn?  Do you think he knows Morty ad Frisk?

·         What do you feel about Cattie’s character at this point in the story,&  why?

Denn:  Denn has gone from a grand amount of money to a minute amount in the past week or so because of distractions while he was playing poker.  –I find myself thinking that Denn in his mid twenties while I read but I have to remember that he is still a teenager and not much older than us-.  Saying that, in chapter 15 he goes back to his empty apartment and wants to order a pizza because he doesn’t have any food.

·         If you were living alone in Las Vegas, NV and only had $73 left would you buy a pizza for yourself?

·         Would you be able to survive on $73 and only get what was complete necessary or would you spend it elsewhere?

·         Is Denn mature for his age, why or why not?

Jimbo tells Denn about the Big Deal poker competition that is happening at King’s Crossing, a new in town.  The only problem was Denn needed 10K to enter the tournament.  I like how Denn puts his mind to his 10k goal and starts to raise money by playing poker with some older people at Lucy Lous.  Over I think Denn is a good guy who is just trying to live his life.

Jimbo:

·         Who do you think Jimbo is, good guy, bad guy, old or young, who do you think he is as a person?

Jimbo tries to help Denn the best that he can throughout the chapters and that is all we have basically seen him do so far.

Morty Deasel:  Cattie’s friend who is helping to take down Denn and steal his money out from under him.  Friends with Frisk.

Frisk: Friends with Morty and Cattie

    Cattie:
    – I don’t think that Cattie had felt bad about stealing the earrings. Simply, I think that she gave them to the man in the parking lot because she decided she didn’t like them. Secondly, hmm. That is a good question, Rebecca, and it is also really deep and nothing that I have thought about before. Really I doubt that she has ‘double-identities’ though. I know that she is a part of this scandal with Denn, yet I do not think her character is too suspicious or misleading.
    – The mystery man may have well know Morty and Frisk, and I think that he did. Otherwise, how would he have singled out Denn? Possibly if the mystery man is part of a different scheme other than Morty and Frisk’s, he could have spotted Denn and noted that he was an extremely talented and young player, making him a target.
    – If I were Cattie, I would not be happy with myself. Especially if I discovered that I had feelings for Denn. Everyone that is a part of Denn’s scandal should feel shameful. I think that Cattie is confused about herself, though. She is most likely only doing this to Denn to get money for herself, and in the long run, she is going to actually see what she is doing.

    Denn:
    – Haha, your first question about Denn is funny… But probably no, if I only had $73 and I was really trying to save up fast, I think I would go foodless for a couple of days so I could enter the $10,000 tournament. After I had won that tournament, then i could eat all the pizza I want.
    – I think I could survive for a little while with $73. After a while, of course, I would run out and then run into a problem. But in Denn’s case, he’s saving up the money to win even more money. So if I must, I’d only buy the neccesities I would need to survive.
    – Denn has made some smart decisions in his poker playing for his age and experience. Yet I think it was a dumb decision as a whole to give up his whole life to poker anyway at such a young age. So overall, I do not think he is 100% mature.

    Jimbo:
    – I’m pretty sure that the story had said that Jimbo was an older gentleman. I’m not sure if he is a good guy or a bad guy, but I’m pretty sure that the whole book is told from Jimbo’s point of view. Therefore maybe he is niether a good guy or a bad guy, but just an outside observing everything.

    Tell me what you think.

Leah, after reading everyone’s blogs about this book this week and learning that we all have different way of looking at this story, like Alex thinks Denn is on drugs and alcohol; I don’t know what to think anymore. Hopefully they guys read my comments and we can come up with one or some general idea about what is going on in this mess of a book.

First you talk about Cattie and ask if she is guilty. We have learned a lot about that Cattie doesn’t care. she took all of Denn’s money and didn’t once think of not doing it. So, giving this guy the earings is just because she doesn’t like them on herself. Cattie does not have “doulble identities” she has one identity, and that is an uncaring girl that steals people’s money. Than you ask if this man that Cattie works for wanted Cattie to fall in love with Denn. Cattie doesn’t even want to be in love with Denn, if you could call her feeling love. I don’t think that her boss knows that she is having these feelings. He propalbly thinks that Cattie doesn’t care about him anymore because she hasn’t said anything to about it. By the way, this guy does know Morty. He talks about him with Cattie on the phone. I think they are all parteners in seting people up.

Next you talk about Denn. You ask if I had only $73 would i stay in Vegas. I would be on the first flight home. I think that Denn staying and still playing poker shows bravery and desire. ANd yes Denn is mature for his age. Everybody else thinks he is 25. SO he must act pretty mature.

I believe that Jimbo is a very good guy. He is always helping Denn out. This is very hard to come by in Vegas, where everybody only thinks of themselves and making money.

    Rebekah,

I think Cattie gave them away because she thought she was going to get caught. I say this becasue you start to get the feeling that Cattie feels she has done wrong, and the earings did not “match.” The mystery man is not really a mystery. His name is Jerry. I think he did this becasue he sets up a lot of people. I am pretty sure that he owns a casino of some sort, but he wants easy money from Denn. To me Cattie was trying to make it through life. She seems very poor, and she just wants to be able to live a nice lifestyle.

Denn is not thinking. He is buying things that are of no use and wasting his money. I think I could live with $73 because you can always win money in Vegas. Also you can buy food for under $50 and live for about 2 weeks. Denn is not mature because of how he acts and how he spends money. He spends money like it grows on trees, and falls in love with people that he does not know.

Jimbo is a good guy that is observing Denn. He wants to see how he acts, and I think sooner or later he is going to teach Denn a valuable lesson.

What did you guys think of the Jerry figure? I think it helps us see Catie a lot more.
