House of Sand and Fog, Connector, Brittany Miller- Post 2

Well, this is definately an interesting book to make connections about considering there really isn’t anything like it. In this section Les, the man who evicted Kathy in the first place, has a little love affair with Kathy. This is interesting because Les is married so he is having an affair with the woman whose life he nearly destroyed by taking her house. The only thing that I could possible connect this with was a soap opera like “All of my Children” or “One Tree Hill”. This story reminds me of one of those types of shows. Other than that I have never watched or heard of anything quite like this.

My question would be why would Les leave is wife or at least cheat on her with some woman he just met? Also, why would he be having an affair with the woman whose life he nearly destroyed? It doesn’t make too much sense at this point.

I don’t really understand either why Les would do these things, besides that he said to Kathy that he married his best friend and there really wasn’t much there. Since we haven’t actually met his wife, maybe she isn’t that great of a person to live with. For the second question, maybe he feels really bad about what he had to do because he is trying to help her get her house back. Maybe Les really does love Kathy but it is too early to tell. Also, now that he has mysteriously not returned after leaving the cabin the one day to settle things with his wife, it is uncertain what Les’ feelings are for either of these women.

Why does anyone cheat on their husband/wife? There are many reason; they could be unhappy, bored, crazy, and angry. There are so many more reasons why someone would cheat, but in this case it is really unclear. We don’t know anything about his wife, she has never been in the book, besides the one time he mentioned her. He doesn’t seem to feel guilty about spending time with Kathy so that’s a sign that something might be wrong with his relationship with his wife, so he feels the need to cheat.
Why he would have an affair with a woman whose life he nearly destroyed is just as clear as why he is cheating. There is no certain answer specified in the text so we have to infer on why he made this choice. I think that even though he did change her life in a not so good way, it is possible to feel an attraction towards her. What he did can’t change his true feelings. The fact the he was the one who evicted her does make things a little more complicated between them though.

Guys-get a conversation going. Who is missing here? Who else is in the group?

Brittany-You need to make a much more significant connection. Just mentioning that it is soap opera-esque doesn’t quite cut it. Be more specific, and use the connection to aid your group in better understanding the book.
