Anil’s Ghost- Connector: Laurisa Varela

I think that I am going to connect this book to the Civil War. I am connecting it to the Civil War because presently in the book a civil war is taking place. Also, the civil war that is going on in Sri Lanka is being directed by a campaign which is killing their citizens.

During the Civil War, the Confederacy wanted to live separate from the Union. Because they lost the war, they lost their own culture that they were striving to have away from the Union. This is sort of like the citizens in Sri Lanka. The campaign killing the citizens of Sri Lanka do not want to be with their citizens because they are killing them. They are killing the citizens to make a statement of some sort. Due to the murders and violence, many people of Sri Lanka are losing their independence and are no longer safe in their own homes. In the Civil War, the south lost and because they lost, they also lost their citizenship of the United States and therefore had to swear oaths and do many tasks in order to be citizens again. So if the leaders of the campaign is ever caught, they will surely be kicked out of Sri Lanka and most likely will not be able to become a citizen again.

Another similarity is the violence that is taking place. The Civil War was very violent and many civilians most likely lost their lives.

So basically both the Civil War and the civil war going on in Sri Lanka in the book are both violent and they are both fights that are killing people from the same country for either mutinous reasons or independence from the country.

My questions for you are…….

What do you think Anil will do now that she realizes just how much she has lost her old culture?

Do you think that she will be able to figure out who is in the murderous campaign and stop them?

Sorry if my connection is rambling. It was kind of hard to find a good connection for this story. :)

To me it doesn’t seem like Anil cares that much about her culture, it doesn’t seem to frusterate her that she can’t understand her language anymore. When she was talking with the old women who cared for her she couldnt understand everything she was saying.
Also, I might sure if she’ll be able to figure out whos behind the killings. The government in Sri Lanka seems so corrupt that if any efforts were made againts them that they would be taken care of. Although, if Anil is able to find the right connections and if she is able to push her way through she might be able to make some chnages for the better.

Yeah, I agree with Adam. Anil doesn’t really care about Sri Lankian culture, which she expresses through her love of the West. She tried to escape Sri Lanka eariler in her life, so she must not have loved it that much. I think that Anil will be able to find the killers for the sole reason that this is realistic fiction, and something has to happen to make the book interesting. If she didn’t find the killers, then the book wouldn’t be very interesting.

To Mr. Shank: I think that if ou looked at what time most people commented, you would see that is like Saturday night. If the Blogs were due on Saturday morning, we would still have the same amount of time o blog. Anyway, if the blogs were due on Saturday, I would probably blog Friday night anyway, but I would rather have a choice incase things come up.

Yep, I agree with Adam and Brian. I don’t think Anil is bothered by the fact that she lost her culture and is now most a Western girl. She seems to like the West a lot. I think she wants to leave Sri Lanka behind because her family died there and she doesn’t want to bring that part of her life back. I think that might be why she doesn’t like to talk about her being a swimmer either.

I think in the end, she will find out who is doing all of this murdering and I really have no idea what she will do with that information. She is a strange character and we really don’t knew her well enough yet to say whether or not she is going to put whoever in jail or not.

Laurisa- I think the connection could be a good one, but it remains a bit superficial. Also, you kind of brush over some important facts about the American Civil War…but a good attempt.
