All- in PD 3 CW Rebecca Krick
Pete Hautman created some pretty great characters in this book so far and I can’t wait to start discussing them with you guys.
Character Overviews
Jimbo: Seems to be the narrator of the story, meets Denn while playing poker, and hasn’t really played a huge role yet.
Denn- 17 year old high school dropout, who moved to Vegas to play poker, great observation skills, in love with a card dealer named Cattie, was played by Cattie, Morty and Frisk but we don’t know why.
Cattie- a 19 girl from Minnesota who worked her way up and now is a great card dealer, keeps things to herself, I think she has some tricks up her sleeve, has multiple “jobs”, and was with Denn.
Morty- helped to set up Denn in poker and play him, gave $10,000 to Cattie (reason unknown).
Frisky- Helped to set up Denn in poker and play him with Morty.

Rebecca i agree these are some aawsome characters. They all have their own interesting story. Pete Hautman has drawn us in and created suspense so we want to continue learning about them. This suspense is created by telling the story backwards. First we found out what happened tp Denn. Now we are finding out why it happened.
I would like to start a disussion. which chaaracter is your favorite and why? I like Jimbo the most. He has been along the game for a while. He has so much experience. Jimbo is always willing to help Denn and put his 2 cents into it. So why don’t you guys answer this question.

Rebecca! You didn’t ask any questions! Haha.
But yes, all of your character descriptions seem about right. I think that something else that we can remember about Cattie is that she had gone to a special class to learn tricks for dealing the cards, so she knew how to fool people and to trick them into thinking that the cards would be dealt the correct way, when really she could make people win.
Also, what do you guys think the whole $10000-Cattie exchange was for?

Oh sorry guys, I had question but I don’t know where they went when I blogged, I swear they were there.
Okay one of the questions I had was, Who do you think the guy on the phone with Cattie was, and what do you think her “job” was?
Leah, you asked my next question that I had, Why do you think Morty gave Cattie $10,000 for?
My last question was who do you think the protagonist(s) and the agtagonist(s) are at this point in the book?
Sorry for that guys, I don’t know what happened?

Rebekah,
I think that it was Morty, becasue they are the ones that set up Denn in the first place. Also, I don’t think it was Frisk becasue he was only an accomplise to Morty in the first set-up.
Well the game that they were playing when Denn was set-up was a no limit poker game. So it probably atleast gave the winner 20 grand. So therfore they split half of the money or less and then it would also put the young boy in a financial crisis. Also I would like to ask do you think that Morty was scared that he would lose? I think that he was becasue he shouldn’t need help to be able to beat a young boy.
It is prety obvious that Denn is the protagonist against Morty. He had to do this, becasue I think that Denn beat him before. Also I think this book could be put in a freuidian aspect. The ID would be Cattie, becasue she has that kid like thing to her as she just wants money. The superego is Jimbo, becasue all he does is want to help. The the ego is Denn, becasue he wants to do the right thing, but needs the guide of Jimbo. What do you guys think?

Great minds think alike… I guess.
Simply, I think that Cattie’s job is to deal cards. She may secretly work under cover though and make deals by cheating to make some extra cash.
Here, I have a good suggestion/point. I do not think that Morty was afraid to lose against Denn. I think that Morty was furious that Denn, a 17 year old boy, joined the poker table and is showing up all of these experienced old players. So maybe Marty was just trying to get back at Denn by completely fooling him and driving him crazy, wondering how that nine had showed up in the deck.
The protagonists in this story I would have to say are Denn and Jimbo. Jimbo isn’t hurting anyone, just narrating the story. Denn is also an innocent teen, who isn’t trying to cheat or steal from anyone, either. The antagonists in the story would have to be the rest of the poker players and Cattie. The poker players are bad because they are cheating, just so they can show up Denn. Cattie also seems to be a antagonist, because she had cheated just to get money. She is also said to be a dark and untrustworthy character.
Any more questions?

Julian, to answer your question mine is Cattie. I say this becasue she is what is making the story interesting. She is making all the drama in Denn’s life occur at this point of the book.
Leah, your thought on Morty is really interesting. I still say that he got beat by Denn before, becasue he doesn’t care about the other players. Poker is all about yourself. Also I would like to say that he is scared, or he would have never set him up. He is acting like an immature coward at ths point of the book.
Also, I know that this is late, but I feel the need to discuss more. What do you guys think about the fact that Denn did not finish school? I think this is horrible, and maybe it will be a fairy tale ending and he will get his GED. But that is a less likely choice as he prolly will go All-in and win big.
