All-In: Illuminator: Leah Sevco

Guys, I LOVE this book! Haha, what are your thoughts on it so far?

Anyway, there were three quotes that I had discovered. The first quote I believe may be important later in the story, or it could possibly be the theme/message of the story. This first quote is:
“It’s not over till you’re dead, kid. It’s all one big game” (18).
I believe that this quote signifies the fact that now that Denn had started, and gotten deeply involved, in his poker career, he will not be able to return to his normal lifestyle with his family again. This quote could also relate to the idea that many people say, “life is one big game”. My last thought on this quote is that since poker became so addicting for Denn, he will never be able to leave the game and begin a normal lifestyle because he will never be able to tear himself away from the game. What do you suggest this quote means?

Secondly, I came across this quotation:
“A guy that brings his relationship to the table is burnt toast” (21).
This quote brings up a lot of discussion and questions. First of all, Denn had fallen for a girl, a card dealer, named Cattie. Don’t you guys think that this was risky, anyway? Of course if something would go wrong with a relationship like those two would have, don’t you think if you were Denn you would never go to a table where she is dealing the cards ever again? Well, anyway Denn had, and Cattie seemed to cheat him out of a huge pot. Why do you think she did this? Did she do it on purpose? Was she paid by the other men at the table to do so?

Lastly, I found a quote that, quite frankly, means absolutely nothing to the story. Yet, I still thought it was funny and Shank-Class-Worthy :)
“Kid’s luckier’n a double-dicked rooster in a henhouse” (21).
The men playing poker say this about Denn as they watch his careful skills and his smart moves.
Haha, thought you guys might enjoy that.

Let me know what you guys are thinking about these. Also, why don’t we get good discussions going on under everyone’s blogs this time! :)

So far i agree with you Leah. This book is great. It keeps us intrested in the book by telling the story backwards. We already know what happend. Denn go all his money taken in a poker game that he was setup in. Now we are learning why the people set him up. I also like that each chapter is through a different characters piont of view. This way we get to know all the chareacters well. The helped the reader a lot by doing this.

Now on to the quotes. I believe the first quote is very theatening and not meant to please. We have to understand who says this. It is the guy who Denn took the restuarant from. So i can imagian that he is pretty upset. He tries to scare Denn by saying that it is not over until he is dead. This also displays that he wants the restuarant back and he will do whatever he can to get it. Next the guy says that it is all a big game. I think he means life is similar to poker. People live to win and get a grand prize. Whatever that may be, love, money, being well known.

Next you ask questions about the second quote. I believe that having this type of relationship is very risky. If anything went wrong she could set the game up for Denn to lose. We learn that she does set him up. I wonder if Denn did anything to make Cattie mad. Next you ask about if Cattie knew that she set Denn up. She obviously did. In a later chapter we learn that she got paid by Morty.

That third quote was pretty funny.

The first quote is great one, Leah. This quote came off to me as life being the big game, not just poker, and that the game is over when you die. I have heard this quote before and I am sure it came from poker players. In life we take different road that could hurt use, make us stronger, or keep us at the same level we were before, life truly is a game you have to earn points- going to school/good grades, trade them in- college/job, and survive and live among people who want to tear you down or build you up. Denn doesn’t have anybody wanting to build him up, but he has plenty wanting to pull him down.

I think it was very risky dating a card dealer from Vegas when you play the game yourself, not a smart move on Denn’s part. I would never go to Cattie’s table ever again, but Leah, we don’t know if that was the last time Denn went to Cattie’s table. This story still has a lot to be told and how do you know Denn only went to Cattie’s take twice? Again, I think Cattie did cheat him out for money but I am not sure if was a good cheating or a bad cheat.

As soon as I read that quote in the book I thought to myself, “I bet Leah picked this one,” because knowing our perverted minds, ha-ha, well you know. I loved that quote and we somehow have to use in class at a random time…maybe I will stick in our Romeo & Juliet dialogue somewhere.

I think the book is interesting, becasue kids can relate to it. Also I think it opens your eyes to how you can be broke by gambling really fast.

Jimbo is tyring to tell Denn that just becasue he was set-up it is not the end. Poker players live their lives like that everyday, and that he shouldn’t end his career becasue he has hit a brick wall. He needs to figure away to get around it and move on.

Well Leah, you created a good question. He is to young to know about love and being burnt. SO when your young , you do some stupid things just as he did. Also it was not risky, becasue he was just in love. When your in love, why should it stop becasue one is a Poker player, and the other is a card dealer. Also she came in the middle of the game to deal the cards, he did not go to her table. So there you are wrong Leah. She did cheat him out becasue she is greedy. She is a kid who wants and needs money. Also it wasn’t like she needed and money.

The last quote is interesting, but he has skills, but he is more lucky then anything, which you need to be sucessful in teh game of Poker.

    Haha, thanks Rebecca.

Also I just thought of this, what you were talking about in your last paragraph, alex, directly relates to the last question on the love survey that we just had to give people!
