Return of the Native Character Watcher Post 4
We have to look at a different character each time, and seeing as Thomasin and Clym were already taken, I will look at Eustacia.
In this section, Eustacia inadvertantley kills Mrs. Yeobright. Instead of coming out and admitting her mistake, she chooses to keep it to herself. This shows us how dishonest Eustacia really is. She would rather force Clym to suffer the thought of having killed his mother than confess. When Clym finds out on his own what Eustacia did, their is a fallout. Eustacia leaves Clym, and returns to live at her former house. (Interestingly, in the movie, it is Clym who leaves to go live with Thomasin, not Eustacia.) Eustacia continues to live without Clym, but begins to see Damon. Damon promises her a life of adventure, more than what Clym gave her. Eustacia, still unsure if she loves Damon, agrees to allow him to take her part way to Paris. The night they are meant to leave, Eustacia falls into a River/Stream. Seeing his love in distress, Damon Follows her. Diggory Venn and Clym also arrive on the scene and try to help. Unfortunately, Eustacia and Damon both drown.
This section show a lot about Eustacia’s character. She doesn’t care about other people. She just wants to be living the high life, in a city somewhere. She is so blinded by her wants, that she doesn’t see what the people around her are sacrificing. (Clym, for example.) Eustacia, throughout the entire book, was snobbish. The book ends with the same conclusion.
My question is why do you think Clym still loved Eustacia even though he knew that she was taking advantage of him?

It’s hard to say why he would still love Eustacia, but I’ll try anyway.
When Clym fell in love with Eustacia he was forbidden to by his mother. So him and Eustacia went through a lot. But when you love somebody, you look past their flaws and mistakes and love their best qualities. I guess it was hard for Clym to stop loving her because you can never really stop loving someone. He will most likely always love Eustacia and that means that he will have to live with what she did in her lifetime because he realizes no one is perfect……..not even the one you love the most.

I would have to partly agree with Laurisa’s response. I do believe that Clym was blinded by love so that after he got over being mad at Eustacia he was able to forgive her becuase when your in love you can’t always think straight. But i don’t agree with the fact that he rationally thought about what she did. I think that he was just able to forgive her because he loved her and most likely made excuses for her. I would also have to wonder how Thomasin felt about Clym still loving her. Thought Mrs. Yeobright was just Thomasin’s aunt, she had practically been raised by her. Mrs. Yeobright was even allowed to tell her who she can and cant marry. I think Thomasin would have been extremely angry with Clym.

Ah, love. Adam hit the nail on the head for me when he said that Clym was blinded by love. Eustacia practically cheated on him and was about to leave him for Paris. But yet, even though Clym knew this, he still loved her. When you love someone, you are supposed to forgive them for their mistakes and never give up on them. This love was a one-way street for Clym and Eustacia, and Clym was the only person that was contributing to the relationship. I don’t know where he got the strength to stay with Eustacia, and quite frankly, Eustacia didn’t deserve Clym. But, Clym must have been madly in love with Eustacia to stay with her through all of the crap she put him through. Maybe he was scared she would hex him with her witch spells, since she was considered a witch . =)

Yeah, I was pretty much thinking like Adam. I think that Clym was so blinded by his previous love that he could overcome Eustacia’s shortcomings. He knew that she cheated on him, but he still loved her. I guess this shows us how powerful love can be…
I kinda (is that a word or a abbreviation/slang I’m not sure) wish that I had put the survery questions in this post, then I would have three people done already. Laugh out Loud. (The proper lol I think?)
Good talk everyone. On to Anil (Anals?) ghost I suppose.
