First off, to get a better look into the last few chapters we need to look into the past. Why do you guys think that Mr. Heathcliff married Isabell if he really loved Catherine? Could it be that he was using her? Possibly blackmail?

Why do you think that after all Mr. Heathcliff has done to Catherine, and vice/versa, that they once again meet each other? Do you think that Mr. Heathcliff intends to “woo” Catherine? Or possibly that maybe he wants just to get back at her?

Finally do you guys believe that what Mr. Heathcliff and Catherine is true love??? Being able to withstand the odds and everyone’s opionions! Or maybe its just a big crush. If you love somebody enough, dont you think you wouldn’t care what other people think of your relationship? Maybe Catherine and Mr. Heathcliff have a love/hate situation? They hate the fact that they love each other?

In my opinion, I think that Heathcliff married Isabella because he wanted to have her fortune and she was not ‘half bad’ of a person to marry. There may have been a little bit of feeling for her, but it would be very limited in my opinion. So Brett, I agree that he was in a way using her, but not for blackmail!

I believe that Catherine and Heathcliff truly love each other and nothing can overcome true love. I do not think Mr. Heathcliff is trying to get revenge to ‘get back’ at her in any way. They are in love! That’s all there is to it.

Again, I do believe that the two characters are in love. I do agree that perhaps they do hate that they love each other, like you said Brett. I do not think, by seeing the two character’s personalities, that they would care what anyone else thought, for they are both very self confident people.

I don’t think Heathcliff was trying to blackmail Isabella – that sounds a bit extreme. Especially if he’s going to marry her, that’s just wrong. I also agree that he was using her, just as I think Catherine married Edgar for his status.

Heathcliff probably wanted to get back at her in a way, especially after she went for Edgar. But I don’t think Heathcliff would need to ‘woo’ Catherine, because if they are in love, then he wouldn’t need to try to win her over.

I think they really are in love. I think what proves this is Catherine’s passage:
“My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods; time will change it, I’m well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath–a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I AM Heathcliff! He’s always, always in my mind–not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being.”
She knows she will always love him, and through that they shouldn’t care what others think about it. I don’t think they hate that they love each other, just that maybe things got in the way of their love, i.e. Edgar and Isabella, primarily their wealth and status.

I thought that Heathcliff married Isabella because, like Megan said, he wanted the Linton’s money. Also, you have to think about how spiteful and cruel Heathcliff is, so that probably played into it.

I do believe that Heathcliff mentioned at one point that in the three years he was gone he was always thinking about Catherine, I can’t find it though. On the other hand, I think Heathcliff was trying to get a little bit of revenge for how Catherine hurt him. So Brett, I think he loves Catherine, but being the person that he is, he wants to hurt her a little bit for what she did to him.

I think they are in love and that its not just a crush. Like how Catherine mentioned that her love for Edgar would fade, but since her and Heathcliff were in a way the same, their love would never fade (this is right before Heathcliff leaves). However, their love wasn’t the kind of love that would allow them to disregard other people’s opinions and marry.
