1. He is highly educated and yes at first he did make careless mistakes, but now he is thinking everything through. I believe he is doing this becasue that is his mind. That he usualy does think things through like he is now but the intial shock kinda sent his mind out of control.

2. Yes i believe the narrorator will become more of a leader later in the book. I think this because He is already poseing as a leader the more he gets into the attacks the more he will become more of aleader telling everyone what to do to survive. Like already he told everyone to get in the water, and people are following his judgement and hiding the same places as him like in chapter 15.

3.I think he is motivated to become leader because that is his mind set. Some people are naturally leaders.

Sonam Sherpa

I also agree with you that he will become a better leader with experience, but as we have already seen when the narrator is quick to give advice it doesn't always turn out the right way. What I mean by this is that when he suggested that everyone should get into the water to escape the heat ray at Weybridge it didn't turn out too well. So my question for you is, just because you think that he will become a better leader do you think that he will be a "good" leader?

First of all Sonam you did not post late. You have until tomorrow at 5 because of Mr.Shank's much appreciated kindness.

Next, I think that the main reason the character is thinking more before acting is because he realizes that that is the only way they will survive. By jumping into unplanned action creates chaos, and a lot more room for disaster. I do not believe that the main character realizes that he is doing this though. I think he is just acting on his instincts to protect himself and others. This is what makes him a great leader. I believe that he will become an even better leader the farther we get in the book. I think this is because he experience will be broader and he will have more knowledge of the aliens. He can use these two things to find a way to defeat them.

Sonam Sherpa

First off I know this is late, so I'm sorry about that. I also think that the narrator will eventually take on a more important role in the actual happenings. But this fact is not really that important, because we could already have assumed that the main character would have something to do with being a leader like figure. This is because who would write a book where the main character doesn't have an important role. I guess that you could tell it from a person's view who was there, but by telling it from a leader's point of view makes the facts weighted heavier. So I am not trying to make your point seem less important, I'm just pointing out that this change is not really that unexpected.

I think that you make a very good point. He did go from freaking out to being a leader. I had not even thought about that until I read you post. I think that he is thinking because he has that natural protection instinct to protect other people. He probably is over the shock of the martians. I think he is thinking to help everybody escape. He may not even notice it. He may just be taking it one step at a time. I think that he will become more of a leader as the story progresses. He seems to naturally become the leader and he will not be stoped because of the will that he will have to get him and others to saftey. I also think that he is a good leader because he has been with the Martians since the begining and he knows how they opperate. I also think that he is motavated to be a leader because he was with the Martians since the begining. He probably feels like he has to stop them somehow.
