Period 1 wotw Summarizer Taran Copenhavaer post 3
Chapter 12: The narrorator was traveling along and met up with a large group of people in Sheperton. He then proceded to tell them all about the martians. Suddenly some were approaching. Artillery were firing at them when one was smashed in the face and collapesed in the river. They had finally defeated one. Every body thought that they could hide in the river from the heat ray but when it touched the water it just about boiled it. The narrorator escapes with bad scaldingbut he escapes none the less.
Chapter 13: The narrorator finds a little boat in the river and padels his way up the river. He met up with the curate. They had talked for a while when they heard gunshots and a weird yelling noise and started on their way again.
Chapter 14: The narrorators brother whom we don’t know the name of either, is in London reading the news of these martians. HE keeps getting updates when the last update is that “they are coming” and they are sending a black smoke that kills all of whom breath it in.
Chapter 15: The narrorator is once again in focus and he witnesses more of the destruction. He sees rockets being fired and smashing into the ground, not exploding or making a sound. He is intruiged and tries to watch but a black mist seems to be rising, the only safe spots were on roof tops or in trees. He watched as the mist covered everything. Meanwhile the fourth cylinder falls.
words to know:
pallid: Abnormaly pale. This was probably common on all of the citizens .
desolate: to leave wrecked and damaged. This was what hapened when the heat ray was used.
calamitive: Being in a destructive state. There is obviously a lot fo this.
kpoje: a small hill. This was mentioned when the rockets were being sent into the air.
tumultuous: An uproar in a crowd of people. This word is used a lot in these chapters and obvioulsly happens whenever the martians are near.
questions:
1. do you think that the narrorator or his brother will escape the black fog?
2. How long do you think it will be until the narrorator and his brother meet up if you think they will meet at all?
3. Do you have any important words that I missed?
Thanks
Taran

1. I do believe that the narrator and his brother will make it out of the fog. The reason why is because authors like H.G. Wells usually like to give their characters hard challenges that makes it seem like they won’t overcome it, but there’s still a lot of the book left, I don’t think the main character will be killed off quite yet.
2. I personally do not think that the narrator will meet up with his brother again, my reasoning for this is that normally family makes everything more emotional and it would make it a little too much like average life if he were to meet up with his brother. Much like the dinner with his wife, it was too average to put in the story and it didn’t fit in with the information given to us by the main character.
3. I personally do not remember reading half of those words, probably because I read half of this on a moving bus, but I did find a word.
cowled- a hood shaped object.
This is significant because it is used to describe the martians and it also referred to them as “little”, and they’re anything but “little”.

1. I see Sonam’s reasoning with the length of the book, but I also just believe that he will make it out. I do not have any proof or support for this, but I just do not want to see them die.
2. I do not believe that the main character and his brother will not meet up, even though I would absolutely love to see it. I think this is because it is so unlikely. With all of the chaos going on in the book the chances are very slim. It just does not seem like a possibility.
3. Again, I read on the bus like Sonam so I don’t remember many words… plus I got bus sick then but anyway…
vehement- to be angry of violent
This is an obviously important word because it is another word to describe how everyone is feeling.

1. The narrator and his brother will make it out of the black fog. This is because the narrator tells the story in past tense. This means that he has already been through the events and has survived. His brother will make it because the narrator has information on his brother. Therefor, his brother had to have told him what he experienced.
2. I think that it will be awhile before they meet up, but they will meet. The brother is getting his own plot line with other people, so it makes sense that they won’t meet up for a bit. Since the narrator knows what his brother went through, they must have met up at one point to tell each other their stories.
3. “…article in the Referee compared the affair to a menagerie suddenly let loose in a village.” Menagerie is an important word to know. It means a collection of wild or foreign animals kept for exhibition. This shows the extent of the panic when you fully understand the above quote.

1. Yes i think they will get out or at least the narrorator will because the good buy always wins! haha but other reasons are because the story would basically end if the narrorator didnt survive. I think his brother will not make it because there is already tragedy in the book why not add more.
2. There is to much threat going on. Liek Erin said chaos. I think the borther will die before they get to meet up.
3. the word i said earlier cockchafer is a beetle. Just so you know.
