As the character watcher, I have to chose one or two main characters and follow them throughout the segment of the book we read.
I chose to follow Clym Yeobright. In the previous part of the book we read, Clym came home from Paris and he started to “fall” for Eustacia. They became closer and closer, and in this part of the book, that affection did not stop. In fact, it grew. Clym’s mother, Mrs. Yeobright, was not happy about her son being interested in Eustacia. They got into a big fight and she did not want to speak to him again. Clym and Eustacia went off on their own and got married. They moved into a little cottage in the heath, that is until they can move to Paris again. Clym’s mother does not come to the wedding, but she does want to give her inheritance to Clym and Thomasin. She sends Christian Cantle to deliver the 100 Guineas. Damon did not go to the wedding, along with Mrs. Yeobright. Clym was also taken advantage of because Eustacia let Damon into their house while Clym was sleeping. I feel bad for him because Eustacia even told Damon that she wasn’t happy with her marriage. Clym has come a long way from the last part of the bok we read because he came home from Paris, he got married to Eustacia, and his relationship with his mother has gone right down the toilet.
The other character I thought played an interesting role in this part of the book was Damon. He was able to deliver the money to Thomasin and Clym, but Mrs. Yeobright did not let him. During Christian’s trip to deliver the money, Christian got caught up in a raffle for an expensive piece of cloth, which he wins. He also manages to tell Damon that he has all of Thomasin and Clym’s money, which Damon wants. He gambles and loses it all to Damon. But, Diggory Venn manages to save the day and wins the money back from Damon. But, Diggory makes a mistake and gives all of the 100 Guineas to Thomasin, when Thomasin was supposed to get 50 Guineas and Clym was supposed to get 50 Guineas. Damon was invited into Eustacia and Clym’s cottage, but this was while Clym was sleeping. Damon and Eustacia talked and they confessed that they still had feelings for one another. Damon’s personality keeps getting more and more shallow. He practically cheats on THomasin with Eustacia AGAIN, he lies, and he steals.
My questions for you are…
Was Clym making a smart decision when he married Eustacia against his mother’s will, and what do you think this will do to him and his mother’s relationship?
Also, why do you think Mrs. Yeobright didn’t trust Damon with the money? Afterall, he is her neice’s huband. What was Damon trying to do when he won the money from Christian? Would he have given it to the Yeobrights, where it was supposed to go? Why do you think Damon didn’t go to Eustacia and Clym’s wedding?

I don’t think that Clym was making a very smart decision when he chose to marry Eustacia without his mother’s permission. Especially after she was right about Wildeve, he she didn’t want Thomasin to marry him and then he went and cheated on her. Clym should have listened to his mother. I think that this will put a strain on their relationship and possibly make them even more distant. They already fought about things all the time, now they may never speak to each other again.
I believe that Mrs. Yeobright didn’t trust Damon with the money because she knew that he wasn’t exactly the most trust worthy man. Also, since he and Eustacia used to be together she knew that he wasn’t very fond of Clym. I think that Clym was just trying to win the money just to be a jerk to Clym and Eustacia. He really didn’t need the money; he just didn’t want them to have it.
Finally, Damon probably didn’t go to Clym and Eustacia’s wedding because it probably would have been too hard for him to watch Eustacia with another man, since he had cared for her so much.

I have to agree with Adam, I think the reason why Damon wanted to deliver the money to Clym and Thomasin is because he planned on keeping it and possibly gambling it away. Mrs. Yeobright knows that Damon is pretty money hungery and not a trustworty man, because Thomasin told her he would not give her any money.
Clym is way over his head in my eyes. He is destroying his already strained relationship with his mother for Eustacia. He is lucky that his mother even considered giving him any of the inheritance money. Clym might not get that money anyway, but it was the thought that counted.
Of course Damon didn’t not want to go to the wedding… his feelings for Eustacia would have caused an outburst because he couldn’t stand to see her with another man.

Haha, well, the paper told me to ask an in-depth question. But, I’m obviously not good at asking in-depth questions, so I asked a bunch because I had to get some information out of you guys.

I think that while Mrs. Yeobright amy come off as nosy and controlling, I really think that she actually has the best interests of her family in mind. Mrs. Yeobright knew that Eustacia was trouble, and tried to warn Clym. Adam hit the nail on the head, it was a stupid descision.
I know we are supposed to expand on previous comments, and use name calling when neccasary. I would like to share a quote from the last post.

Lets take a look at this for a moment. Clym was trying to be a jerk to Clym. This makes no sense. You fail. Epically. Anyhow, what Adam meant to say was Wildeve was trying to win the money just to be a jerk. I think that Mrs. Yeobright didn’t want to give the money to Damon because she knew that he didn’t have a very close relationship with Thomasin, and the money would not be used properly.
Finally, I don’t think that Damon went to the wedding because he ws humiliated. People weren’t laughing at him, but he knew he had been defeated by Clym in the Race to Eustacia’s heart. He would have wanted no part in the celebration of his defeat.

When Clym married Eustacia, he knew that his mother disapproved and so he totally went against what she wanted so he made her feel really upset and unloved by her son. So, he was dumb, ’cause his mother loves him and even gave her 50 guineas of her inheritance, which he ended up not getting anyway. Because Clym and his mother already have a strained relationship, this could completely ruin what they have as mother and son.
It’s obvious that Mrs. Yeobright would not give the money to Damon because previously her daughter told her that he refused to give her any money. When she gave the money to Christian, Damon found out about the inheritance and took it away because he’s a big jerk and wants Christian to seem like an idiot. And, he wants to make sure that neither Clym nor Thomasin get their money.
The reason why Damon doesn’t go to the wedding is because he is still head over heels for Eustacia and is so jealous of Clym, which is another reason why Damon wanted to take the inheritance from Clym.
I have to agree Mallory! There’s so many questions!!!

Haha, again sorry about the questions. But, you all gave some really good answers. So, drawing conclusions from what you guys said, Damon is a jerk and Clym is dumb for marrying Eustacia. Thomasin is a victim here, though, because she married a lying, backstabbing, son of a nutcracker. =) She seems like a very nice girl and in the next chapters, I want to see more of her and Damon’s relationship. I can’t get enough of the drama.
