1. I think this war is like other wars because because there is a lot of distruction. Casualties, but usually from not just one side although the one martain in the river.

2. I also think the red glow is symbolism but i think it is blood shed happening now and future bloodshed to come.
Also i think the sun is a symbol because the sun was setting when the martians first killed.

3.I think he does not give his name because it is for mystery and to give that kind of feel to the book. Kinda like super heroes nobody knows there real name. This is so readers can not focus on the characters so much and focus on what is actually happening. Yes characters are a main part of the book but names should not be what analysis should be on it should be the actions of the characters and what is happening in the book

I know u guys might not respond to this, but i am just kinda trying to have a little discussion until the next blog.

Im not very good at starting disscussion so if you guys have any ideas GREAT!

What does the wheather represent in the story since it always seems to be really bad wheather all time. No one has that much bad wheather on a normal basis. Why do you think H.G. wells would discribe the wheather so much?

Colin Easter

1. The war is similar to other wars in that the war started over land. In the past, the majority of wars started over landownership. The Mexican War, Roman conquests, wars of the Greeks, and other wars were centered around land. This war is no exception. The martians want the earth and the people want to keep it. This war has the typical bloodshed, panic, and large use of resources that other wars have as well.

2. I felt that there wasn't much symbolism at all. Perhaps the author was trying to symbolize something with the green smoke and the gas canisters. However, he was probably connecting them to growing industry and the development of our own gas attacks. The red glow would symbolize the death, destruction, fear, and bloodshed the aliens are bringing.

3. The author specifically mentions places in England because he is from England. As you know, England isn't very large. Therefore, it is easy to name specific places from England, especially if you are from there. I think that the narrator remains unnamed is because the author is trying to put the focus on the actual events. The story is meant to entertain, and character background isn't always entertaining.

1. War is war. However you look at it, it is still a war. This war is just like any other war in history except this war is between two planets. There is death, destruction, new weaponry and two sides that believe they both are right and deserve to win. The thing that causes this war to be SO different is that it is not a country against a country, these are entire planets fighting! Everything is on a much larger scale.

2. There is a lot of symbolism in the story. The most obvious one to me (Which Taran mentioned)is the red glow that is always near the aliens path of destruction. This glow is from the heat ray, but it could also symbolize death, danger to come,or evil. It is all according to how you look at it.

3. This I already responded to in Sonam's post, but I think it is to create mystery. It makes the main character seem less like a person, causing the reader to feel a little detached from him. The reasoning for this is not yet known, but it might be like that so the author can have the character do something out of the ordinary, without causing such a shock. This is sort of a toughie...

Sonam Sherpa

First off I know this blog is going to be late.

1. Well like other wars in history this war was started over a stupid reason, we were just here and the martians chose to "pump us full of laser". For example like in WWII we don't really know how powerful our enemies are so in WWII they had reverted to using an atomic bomb because we didn't know how powerful our enemies were, so I wonder what the people in the novel will be foced to do.

2. Well I had found a lot of heavily laden sybolism and imagery while the main character was describing the martians. This is most likely because by using a lot of sybolism it is giving more realism to the story. An example of this would be when the main character promised to return that man's coach. He told the man he would return it and the man died while waiting for him to come back, that could be symbolism of what is happening everywhere.

3. Well, I addressed this in my blog, which I hope you'll respond to. I think that by using specific settings it gives the novel a certain amount of realism that is wanted by the reader so that deeper connections can be made. I also believe that it was a good idea for the author to not give a name to the main character. This is because a certain amount of realism is good in a novel, but too much can then make it too real, and possible. So if he were to give him a name then it would make room for emotional attatchment to this character, and then if something were to happen to him or his family it would worsen the affect.

1. This war is mainly like most of our wars because there are two opposing force. They are both fighting for their survival, us to live through the attacks and them to take us over(my guess.) The martians are taking casualties just like in our wars. Finaly it seems as if the fighitng is nonsense. We usualy forget what we are fighting for in our own wars and we technicly do not know why we are fighting this war either.

2. Some symbols that I noticed are the red smoke was probably representing blood. The green fire that was on the cylinders was probably to stand for the martians. Most people think of the color green when they think of aliens so why not incorporate that into an alien situation. The heat ray was probably a symbol of destructuion. Of course it actually does destroy things but of all the elements fire seems to recive the most attention for destruction.

3. I think that it is more important for the author to describe places other than people because it is a war for our World to survive. It is not over one person or one type of people it is over one race or a planet. It is remember called War of the Worlds. I think that it is more imortant for the Worlds to be recognized if they were ment to be recognized. I guess the author does not even tell you the narrorators name because he does not want you to focus too much attention to him he wants you to focus on other things.
