Alex Berresford Period 3 TO2C
As the summarizer, I want to point out the setting, and the info of the book, and the time that is occurring during these parts.
Chapter 13- Not much in this chapter except fro the strange visit from Sydney Carton. It is weird, because he shows up at Lucie’s house, and just discusses how he is not well. Also how they would not work out. I think that he is a little mental, because I never knew that she was even considering marrying him at this point of the book.
Chapter 14- This is where it gets really weird, and it really shows how the time period was. In this chapter there is a guy named Robert, who is getting buried. This is important, because they say he was a spy. Also they started stealing things at the end of the funeral.
Chapter 15-16- I put these chapters together, because they all follow the same plot. They all deal with this group that wants Darnay dead. This group includes some spies, Monsieur and MadameDefarge, and many more. They make petitions which they go to Versailles to see the king and queen. Also in this chapter we find that Lucie might marry Darnay.
Chapter 17-19- They are officially married. I pretty much knew that, but now it is official. But now the latest is that Dr.Manette is making shoes again. This is not good, because this is taking him back to the past. So Mr.Lorry does destroy the stuff as Darnay, and the Manetts do to Wales. Why do you guys think he is making shoes again?
Chapter 20- They get back just to see Sydney Carton. What do you think of this guys character part in the story? I think he is pretty annoying, and I think he is jealous. Anyways he shows up because he thinks that Darnay hates him basically. He wants the approval to come over whenever, and he gets it.
Chapter 21-Three years later….. Lucie has a daughter. Several years later….. the daughter dies, and a son is born. So why do you guys think that Charles is letting all this time go by? Also Sydney keeps dropping in over time. Also Mr.Lorry, and Darnay are going to Paris during a dangerous French Revolution.
Chapter 22-We really find out a lot about Madame Defarge, as she is murdering a lot of people. There group is now known as Vengeance. But what do tehy need revenge on? Does anybody understand this? What is her reason to kill all these people? Is there a thing called police, and laws at this time period?
Chapter 23-In this chapter, it talks about how there is no more class. There is no rich and poor, because everybody is being killed. It is like the poor has taken over. This is complete madness.
Chapter 24-We know the year is 1792, and also it has three years passed again. Same thing with the killing, and he leaves two letters behind as he leaves for Paris.
Other key thing- The knitting is like voodoo, as she knits names that will die. She kills the people though.
Also notice the setting as it switched all over the place. To understand the book, you have to understand how all the events show the theme of the book. It shows us number of settings where violence took place. This book wants us to see how bad the time period of the French Revolution. It is showing us a piece of history, but using different characters to give us a better idea of things that could take place.
Word/Character
Words-vengeance-To have revenge on someone.
class struggle-This is how things happen between the rich and the poor.
resurrection-Rising to life again.(Rebirth)
Mender of Roads- A character in the story that is apart of the Vengeance.
Question: The story is called “Tale Of Two Cities,” what does that have to do with the book so far? Support your information with examples.

Why is Dr. Manette is making shoes again? I asked this question in my initial blog, also. In the book, it said he started making shoes again when Lucie and Darnay were on their honeymoon. The book also says and shoes that Lucie is the only one who can calm Dr. Manette down and bring him back to the present. So most likely, Dr. Manette starts making shoes again because he is without Lucie, and making shoes is to him a comfort zone.
To answer your next question, what do I think of Sydney Carton… Well, he did and possibly still does like Lucie, so it is probably hard to tear himself away from the girl he loves. Yet, to the reader he may seem a little annoying, because he doesn’t technically have to be a part of the story. He seems to be somewhat of a neusance. And of course, Alex, he is definatly jealous of Lucie and Darnay.
Truthfully, I do not know why the author is letting all this time go by. Maybe it is simply because not much different happens during that time.
Just to throw it out there, maybe Madame Defarge is secretly a spy and she is killing all these people as a part of her work. Also in this time period, I’m not sure if there is a police, but even if there was, because of the war they probably don’t do much good. Also it is most likely hard to inforce the law during this time of war.
Lastly, this book is probably called ‘Tale of Two Cities’ because of the war going on. Maybe there is also some inside connection you could make between the characters and the title. Perhaps Lucie, Darnay, Mr. Lorry and some others could be on one side, while Carton, Madame Defarge, and some others could be on the other side.

Hello Alex i will tell you what I think about some of your questions.
First you ask why Mr. Manette has gone back to making shoes. There could be a lot of ways to look at this. I think that it is a sign of depression. His daughter was married. To him this means that he is losing her. He doesn’t know how to express these feelings, so he goes back to what he did all the time.
Next you say that Cartoon and Darnay hate each other. I don’t agree with this. Even though the court case and every thing they sound like they got over it. They even talk about being friends.
To answer your next question about why the author is letting time go by, is to show the reader that things have developed and people have gotten used to each other. Like the marriage of Lucie and Charles. They have lived a happy marriage.
You next ask about why Madame Defarge is doing this. I am also confused about this. I had to do some research about the time period. It just seems to be endless rioting.
Lastly you talk about why the story is called the Tale of Two Cities. The story takes place in two different cities, London and Franch. Throughout the story Dickens has been switching to each city. Maybe later in the story these cities will come together more. By this i mean they will have to do with each other more.

Dr. Manette makes shoes because it comforts him when Lucie isn’t around. I believe he is a much protected person and when Lucie isn’t around he is scared she won’t come back.
Sydney is very jealous of Darnay and Lucie and he is a pain in the butt, I feel like when you think he is gone he comes back. Why does he hang around so much, he doesn’t even have a shot with Lucie she is MARRIED! I personally dislike this character the most so far.
I like how Charles is letting the time pass by quickly it is showing how the lower class is rising up and challenging the upper class. It is also showing how the main characters in the story are changing and letting new character com3e in.
Leah is right, Madame Defarge is a spy and killing the people is her job, do you guys think knitting the names makes it easier for her because it calms her down? And there were police back in the 18 century but during the revolution I feel like it was every man for himself, at least every poor person for them self.
The book is taking place in two cities (countries) France-Paris and England-London. There are two revolutions going on with the countries and I am going to once again agree with what Leah said, I think that there are two sets of characters good and bad one and they make up two cities in a way.
