War of the Worlds Period 1 Post 3 Erin C.

This section of the book deeply describes the town, and the condition that it is now in.  The area seems to be almost completely barren at this point and most of the buildings are destroyed from the heat ray and the aliens.  This section is one of the good descriptions: “We pushed through them toward the railway without meeting a soul.  The woods acreoss the line were scarred and blackened ruins; for the most part the trees had fallen, but a certain proportion still stodd, dismal gray trunks, with dark brown instead of green foliage.”  All of these descriptions remind me a lot of the movie, “I am Legend”.  The only differences are that instead of being infected humans, they are martians.  So my questions for you are:  Will the planet become completely desolate by the aliens killing them all off?  If not, how do you think the humans will survive?  Try to use background information to draw your conclusions.

Again please everyone post as soon as possible. Sonam and I are going to be in NY and unable to post anytime tomorrow or Sunday because we do not have internet connection!!! Please save us!!!! hahaha

That is a good connection and I agree with you. It is like they will destroy every one. They obviously don’t kill every one because the narrorator is still alive after the end to be telling the story. He makes it seem like it has already happened because he puts in things like how he didn’t know at the time, and things like “as of then…”. It will not be completly desolate but we don’t know how many people survive. You can not gather that from the way he writes. I think that the survivors will survive either by the military or by a force of nature that the martians have never experienced. Obviously the narrorator can not fend off the Martians by himself but other things can. I do not exactly know how the humans will survive, just that at least one will.

I also agree with whoever commented before me (you should really put your name on your comment). It is obvious that everyone is not killed off by the actual events of this story because he lived to tell the tale, however we do not know if he will die from the aftermath. I also think that the connection that you made was a good one. The reason why is because in both cases we also were the ones who caused the problem. For example, in “I am Legend” it was our fault for messing with nature that we ended up poisoning the masses. Also, although it wasn’t as direct, but the martians could have a ttacked us due to the fact that a majority of the people on earth were aggressive and instead of confronting the martians after they attacked us, we chose to attack right back.

The planet won’t become completely desolate as we know that the narrator survives. Judging from the destruction of one tripod, it can be assumed that a large military could take several of them down. If every major country killed one tripod, there wouldn’t be any tripods left. Since England showed that they could kill one, this isn’t an impossible feat to accomplish. Most people will try to survive by fleeing and hiding from the martians. The rest will be fighting in the military trying to destroy the martians. I think that the navy will be important to survival in the upcoming chapters. As for your connection, I think that it will be interesting how disease will play a role in the coming chapters. If people start catching diseases from the destruction, will the martians catch diseases as well? Perhaps diseases will kill off the martians like they did the Indians.

    good connection Erin!

I have never actually seen that movie so I can’t really say anything about that, but for your question I think that the martians will not completely destroy everything. I think that the humans will come up with something to beat them. Just because in most stories the good guy always wins. Because the narrorator is becoming a leader i think he will be the one to make a plan to beat the aliens.

P.S. I really wish the martians could talk!
