I agree with Megan, if Edgar would have acted differently, that it probably wouldn’t have changed anything. Either way he and Catherine would still have problems, because she has feelings that are stronger for Heathcliff.

I don’t think Heathcliff married Isabella for the sole purpose of getting wealthy, but it probably helped him make the decision. I think he did it to get back at Catherine for marrying Edgar. To expand on what Megan said about what Heathcliff did to Catherine, she did the same thing, so I’m wondering why love didn’t prevent BOTH of their marriages.

Hindly always acted this way toward Heathcliff, so I’m not really sure if it was only for attention. What Derrick says about making a game out of it really stood out to me. This reminded me of The Most Dangerous Game, because if Heathcliff knew Hindly wanted to harm him, and it just goes on and on, it’s sort of what the hunter did to the guy that was on the island.

I believe that it was unneccesary for Edgar to “throw” himself at her. If she locked herself in a room refusing to eat chances are that you just want to be left alone a think. Unless Catherine was just doing this for attention.
I believe he married Isabella out of spite. He was trying to get back at Catherine and Edgar. Also it provided him with the oppertunity to get in touch with Catherine. He was able to use Isabelle as blackmail.
I agree with Megan, but I would call Hindly along the lines of a rebel. Just disagreeing with something or causing mischeif for no apperent reason, or just to stand out. I believe this is an act for attention.

It is possible that he brought his troubles with Catherine upon himself. I do not know if it would have made a difference, though. I think that Edgar became more miserable by acting in this fashion, but Catherine had already made her mind up about her feelings towards Heathcliff.

I do not think that this was Heathcliff’s initial thought, but was definitely a positive outcome for him. I believe that he did it to get revenge on Catherine for marrying Edgar, for he said he was going to get revenge. What I find interesting is that if Heathcliff really loved Catherine, he would never do such a cruel thing to her, or so one may think!

Hindley, in my opinion, is just a disturbed man who will never find any real happiness in life. He just wants to make Heathcliff’s life as miserable as he can, doing everything in his power to turn everything upside down. He wants Heathcliff to suffer and not just endure a quick and easy death. He wants, as I said before, to make his life as awful as he can!
