TOTC: Discussion Director: Leah Sevco

So far, I am mostly understand the story, but still I am slightly confused. But there are a few things I would like to ask to get the discussion for this week’s blog going.

First off, what do you think of Madame Defarge’s knitting? Does it not seem sort of creepy to you? Also I’m not sure if I missed it or if it just didn’t say, but what happens to the people whose names are knitted on the register?

Secondly, I would like to remind you of something that may be a key part in the story by asking you a question. Did the fact that Lucie and Darnay went on their honeymoon cause the doctor to “cobble shoes”? Possibly, this is just his reaction that happens when he is confused, lonely, or scared. He may be going a little insane.

Lastly, I would like to comment on how Mr. Lorry had reflected so deeply on the way he had brought Lucie up and helped her through everything. Could he possibly have some feeling for Lucie? Also, even though their relationship has been lasting for 9 years, do you think it will last them for the rest of their lives?

Madame Defarge’s knitting does mean something, Leah, she knits the names of the people who she wants (well she doesn’t want to kill them, someone else does) into the register and they eventually get killed.

Julian is talking about the same thing in his blog about Dr. Manette “cobbling shoes.” I wrote a response about the shoes on his blog so anyone can read it if they want to know what I think about it.

Lucie and Lorry have a father daughter type relationship going on. Any feelings Lorry has for Lucie is the love a father has to his daughter or the feelings of having a best friend, but nothing more than that. I do think Lucie and Lorry will be friends forever because he introduced her to her father and Lorry would not leave anytime soon, hopefully.

Leah you asked this last week. We talked about how it is a type of voodoo and how she was evil.

Next you talk about Dr. Manette and the shoes. I have been looking at this from many different views. We have to understand Dr. Manette’s thought process and what is important to him. His wife has died and the only thing he has is his daughter. Now she is married and will have to raise a family. Dr. Manette knows that he will eventually be alone. So the shoe making is his way of showing that he is upset and is scared of losing his daughter. It has been his life for a long time.

Lastly you talk about a possibility of Mr. Lorry having feelings for Lucie. I think that he is only tring to be helpful to his old friend and his daughter. Mr. Lorry knows that Lucie is married and respects it.

Madame Defage problem is quite simple. I say this now, becasue she is the murderer. She is like the Ku Klux Klan of our time. She knits them in, as a list, and then has her group go and kill these people. It seems kind of sick, as she is a lady. Also since I like to watch a lot of CSI, what motive do you think she has? Do you guys think that she is going to get caught?

I think the though of not having his daughter there 24/7 made him a little weird. I do think that she will find out and beable to comfort him in Book 3.

They will last forever, and Mr.Lorry to me seems like family. As I said this before, as he has taken care of her like a parent should. If he would have feelings for her, I think he would have messed up things with her and Darnay by now. Who agrees with the family connection?
