Tale of 2 Cities Period 3 Character Watcher

I have decided to follow Lucie and her father, Dr. Manette throughout this reading.  They both go through strong ups and downs.  Both also play big roles throughout the second book.  We also get a lot of our questions answered about them.

First I would like to talk about Lucie.  Last time there were many questions that were left without answers.  We learned that Charles Darnay is in love with her and was going to ask for her hand in marriaged.  It was also learned that Mr. Stryver asked for Lucie, but he was turned down.  Was Lucie going to marry Darnay?  This question was answered with a huge yes.  The two finaly got married.  They decided to live in an apartment above of Dr. Manette.  Lucie and him have developed a great, strong relationship.  These livind arrangements should keep these two happy.  Later in the story we find out that the marriage is going great.  Charles is treating her well.  They also have had a little girl with the name of Lucie.  Unfortunatly all this good news for Lucie ends when her second child dies when only a toddler.  This upsets Lucie.  She seems to be kind of depressed.  With this I believe it is important to ask if Lucie will recover and continue a happy marriage with Charles?  Will her relationship continue to get better with her father?  The outcome of these questions will control the outcome of mthis story.

Next I would like to talk about Dr. Manette.  He is now freed and back to normall living.  Him and his daughter have a great relationsip.  It almost seems that he needs her.  When she gets married he says that he is upset at losing her.  Though he isn’t really losing her, she will be right up above from him.  He is so worried that he might lose his daughter that he starts making shoes again.  This is very confusing.  He is going back to his old way of living.  He makes shoes for nine days straight.  Mr. Lorry and Miss Pross think this is terrible and that Lucie can not see her father like this.  Eventually Dr. Manette is back to normal.  Why did Dr. MAnette do this?  Will Lucie find out about this breakout that her father had?

Great question, Julian, and I really think it was a great one to ask because why her father would return to the habit of making shoes. Does it comfort him, and if it does what does it remind him of and why does it make him comfortable? He was making shoes for all those years as a prisoner but makes them when he thinks he is going to lose his daughter. Maybe he thinks that if he looks like he is going crazy Lucie will stay near him (like she already was) and not leave. Dr. Manette might have been doing this to get attention or because it comforted him

And I don’t think Lucie will find out about the “breakout” Dr. Manette had because Lorry doesn’t want her to think her father is getting worse instead of better.

Well, Julian, I believe that Lucie has gotten over the fact that her first child had died because she moved on and had a second child. As for her relationship with her father… I think that will always be strong, because Lucie has the power to comfort and calm Dr. Manette down. If for any reason the two would grow further apart in their relationship, it may be due to the fact that Lucie is married and has a husband and a child to take care of.

I doubt that Lucie will find out from Mr. Lorry or Miss Pross that her father had this outbreak. If she does, that will probably worry her sick, and she’ll think that it’s because she wasn’t with him. Then it could possibly ruin her marriage and her life.

And I do not think Dr. Manette did this consiously. I think it is just his comfort zone.

Julian I think you have it wrong. The daughter is the one that dies. I am pretty sure of this, but then they end up having a son. If anybody gets on to comment, please correct us if we are wrong. Anyways, I think they will have a strong relationship, but I am waiting for Darnay to tell her about his name problem. I think this will be a set back for them, and it willcause for mor drama.
As for the father issue. He feels as he has lost her, becasue once you marry, you become your own family with your husband. SO he feels he has lost her, becasue she is not going to be there very minute with him anymore. So going back to the shoes makes him believe that maybe this never happened. She will find out about this, becasue I think Mr.Lorry will tell her. I say this because if she does know, then she can go talk to her daughter about the problem.
A quick question. Does anybody think that Dr.Manette will go mad once he finds out about his tools?
