War of the Worlds Pd.3 Paula Ferrara, Character Watcher

The character I would like to focus on is the narrator’s younger brother. Like the narrator, we do not know his name. However it is known that he lives in London and upon hearing of the Martian’s arrival sends a telegraph to his brother, telling him that he would like to come to his house to investigate the Martians for himself. The brother is very much like the narrator in that he likes to see things for himself and that he keeps a cool head in times of danger. Also, like the narrator, he seems very chivalrous. The narrator insisted on leaving his wife to return their cart to the innkeeper they borrowed it from. This requires him to go back to their town, which is under seige. The narrator’s brother, during his flight to escape the Martians, attempts to help a lot of people and tries to do the right thing. Upon seeing two women being attacked by robbers, he fights of the men and is almost killed when one of the women come back with a revolver and drives the thieves off. While traveling with the two women, he also attempts to save a man from being trampled by a cart, an act which nearly gets him killed, and helps in convincing Mrs. Elphinstone to come with them on the boat and travel to safety instead of staying on land and putting herself in danger out of fear of leaving for a new country. The brother seems to be a very self-righteous person. What do you think drives him to be so chivalrous? Do you think his self-righteousness will keep him alive or eventually get him killed?

I think that it is just in his nature. I don’t think he is trying to be chivalrous, I just think that it is him being him. It isn’t wrong for a person to be brave, or to help someone out. He probably is thinking that the world might be coming to an end, so he wants to leave the world knowing that he helped someone.

I don’t think it amtters to him. I don’t think it matters at all. How can you say that when we have people doing it for us all the time. Do you think that that question runs through the soldier’s minds that fight for our freedom. Do you think they sit there saying, “Man I don’t want to do this if I can die. I don’t want to risk my life for someone else.” Soldiers make that decision to protect others and that is their job. They wouldn’t sign up for the military if they don’t want to do that. I think that the brother is just doing what he does best. He isn’t going to think twice about helping someone, and that is a great characteristic.

I have to agree with Abbey I don’t think that he is trying to be chivalrous. I think that, that is the way the brothers were brought up and it is just in their nature to be like that.

Again I’m going to agree with Abbey. The brother is not going to think twice about dieing to save someone else’s life. Abbey uses a great example of the soldiers that are in Iraq and Afghanastan. YEs he most likely will die from theis characteristic, but he doesn’t care because he will die saving someone else from danger.

I also agree in the sense that he is not being exactly “chivalrous”, but rather just a good person. If you saw a person in trouble and had the power to save them, would you? I have enough faith in the human race that in times of chrisis like this that it should be expected for a person to be helpful to others. I am certainly not saying that all people would do that, but i also believe that they should not be placed on a pedestal for it.

I believe that it is a very valid possibility that this may get him killed, but i also think he is more likely to be killed by the Martians than from his helping people. If he saw a person in danger, however, i think he would sacrifice himself for them in an instant.
