The Bean Trees- Discussion Director;post 2,Kortney Mann, Period 1
Summary:
In chapters 1-4 we read about a girl named Taylor and how she had a child given to her, but we also read about a girl named Lou Ann and how she was having a baby and how Angel left her. In our first posts we never mentioned Lou Ann. I think it was necessary to mention her because now in chapters 5-8 Taylor was looking for a place for her and Turtle to stay and she ended up moving in with Lou Ann and her son, Dwayne Ray. Taylor soon got a job working with Mattie even though she has a fear of exploding tires. Also in these chapters Turtle starts to talk. Taylor took Turtle to the doctor and pound out that she had multiple fractures that had healed as she grew. Taylor and Lou an also discovered that Turtle’s real name is April.
Questions:
1. Do you think it was a wise decision for Taylor to choose to live with Lou Ann instead of choosing one of the other people that had an ad in the paper?
2. Do you think that Taylor’s decision to work with Mattie was smart due to her fear?
3. Do you think that Taylor should have reacted little more when Turtle started talking?
4. Do you think that they should continue to call Turtle, Turtle or start calling her by her real name April?

I think that it was a wise decision to move in with Lou Ann because this is a lady she knows instead of living with people she doesn’t know or renting from people she doesn’t know. I would rather choose to live with someone I am at least familiar with instead of a complete stranger.
Also, sometimes you have to overcome your fears in order to do the best for the people around you. Taylor needed a job and although she might be a little frightened, she needs the money so sometimes you just have to put your feelings aside in order to help those around you. So, yes I do believe that taking the job was a pretty smart decision because what happens if she couldn’t find another job?
Taylor probably didn’t know how to respond to the little girl starting to talk. She has never had kids before and Turtle isn’t even her kid. She might have had numerous things going through her head and she just didn’t know how to express them. I don’t think that it really mattered. Yes, she probably should have shown more interest just because Turtle might have liked the attention but I don’t think that it is going to affect her drastically.
I think that it is up to Taylor whether or not to keep calling her Turtle or April. As of now, Turtle is Taylor’s child and Taylor chose to call her Turtle. I would choose the name if I was Taylor because it would be my child, but I would have tried to choose an actual name instead of Turtle. I think that it is ultimately up to Taylor as to what she will call her.
