ROTN Character Watcher: period 3-Laurisa
Because I am the character watcher, I think I should talk about a different but important character in the book. That character is Granfer Cantle. He knows everyone in town by their first or last names and their occupations. He likes to talk about other people’s business, especially about the wedding of Thomasin Yeobright. He is eager to hear every new piece of information that may come about in that subject. He does not gossip to hurt other people in his town, but it does not seem to matter to him if they do not want him to say anything to anyone or not, because, he most likely will update everyone anyway. However, as the story goes on, I think that he is starting to care how people feel when he tells everyone their business. My question regarding this character is: Do you think that Granfer will stop his gossipping? or do you think that due to his gossipping there will be an outburst between who he gossips about and himself?

I think that Granfer (Grandfer?) Cantle will not stop gossiping. He is an old man living in a usually boring town. He doesn’t have much else to do except gossip, and I think the people of the Heath accept that. I think that the people that he gossips about understand that gossip is a way of life that they have to deal with.

I think that Granfer Cantle will continue to gossip because that is how he has had to entertain himself all these years. Since his own life has become dull he now tries to excite it with talking about other people. Although I do think that some people may get tired of his gossiping. Especially Eustacia if she starts to spend more time with Clym out in the country. She’ll have to put up with all of the country folk, and she won’t like it.

I also believe that Ganfer Cantle will continue to gossip. Being a girl and all, I know what it’s like to gossip a lot and it’s sort of fun. But, it does hurt people’s feelings sometimes. Granfer Cantle doesn’t seem like he cares whether he hurts people’s feelings or not. I think that since there is a new love connection between Eustacia and Clym, and the marriage between Thomasin and Damon, i think he will have so much to gossip about. I think he will find it very hard to stop gossiping, because everyone does it, and he seems to love to do it. Maybe Granfer Cantle enjoys to gossip because his life is boring, and, again, drama is one of the only ways to keep yourself occupied in a little town like the heath.
