Period 3 To2Cities Connector

Madame Defarge is always knitting when she is around people, she is knitting names into a register and these people will be executed.  What Madame Defarge is doing reminds me a bit of voodoo dolls, maybe because you sew them and just the fact that she is knitting the names is strange.  What do you guys think about her knitting the names of people who are to be executed?

Also, after Lucie and Charles are married we see Dr. Manette return to his old habit of making shoes again because he thinks he is losing Lucie.  When people get depressed so drink, smoke, do bad things to themselves or others, what Dr. Manette does really reminded me of a drinking problem because he can stop for a bit but as soon as something goes wrong he returns to his old ways.  Then when Lorry sees him in this state he chops of the shoemaker’s bench and hides the tools in the garden so Manette can’t make shoes anymore.  This to me is kind of like rehab in a way because he cut Dr. Manette from his shoe making supplies like alcoholics are at a rehab center.

Well I personally think that this is really wierd, and does not really match up the past events of the book. Also I agrre with the voo doo, becuase they are both being created either as dool, and or knitted. But in a way it is not, because voo doo, is controlling someone. Where I don’t think that the names can do anything.

I have not read to all of book 2, so I did not know about the shoes. But I can agree with the rehab and what not, because losing a daughter, is something that could make you become depressed. Which further more could lead to like a drinking, smoking, and what not. I do not like how he thinks that he is going to lose her, becauase they seemed like they were having a good relationship between the two. This is really weird, but I think that this is going to have a fairy tale ending, so they will have a good relationship.

I agree with your thought on the drinking problem. It is most likely really hard for Dr. Manette to get out of this state, especially because of what he has been through. He seems somewhat of a mental case, finding comfort in odd things.

Also, Madame Defarge seems to be a mental case, too. Saying that her knitting reminds one of a voodoo doll seems reasonable. It is also somewhat creepy. And most likely, something will happen to the people whose names are carved on the register. How does Madame Defarge know this? Hmm..

This is a very good observation. This is very similiar to voodoo. The things she is knitting are the dolls and the names are the people. Why is this happening. Maybe it is just a quidencedence (idk). She probaly knits when people are not dying.

I thought that we only agreed that we weren’t going to read all of book two. It is good that Darnay finally got the courage to ask Lucie.
