After reading what everyone has to say I realized that maybe the narrator is a LITTLE crazy. He has gone through a lot of trauma. He has the shock of aliens being on the planet for one thing, and even more the loss of his close friend. His emotions are probably going everywhere. In that type of situation (not like I've experienced aliens but...) you do feel a bit insane. ~Erin I am going to contradict what I said earlier a little bit. The reason why is because everyone somewhere has a primitive desire to display their dominance over others, one way or another. And with this extreme situation at hand where people were getting killed it would be an ideal situation to show off your "toughness" by not fearing the martians. Another reason why I would stay interested by the martians is probably the martians landing would have to be one of the biggest pieces of news in a long time, and if you were to know more about the situation then everyone would be envious of your gusto, and whether someone will admit it or not everyone feels he need to know more or be better than someone else. To answer your second question I do not believe that the narrator is going "crazy", I just think that because of the situation at hand and also counting that his friend Ogilvy had died he is probally in some kind of trauma. This could not be true but even if it isn't he was bound to lose some of his senses when the martians landed.
