Amber Jones war of the worlds pd.1 post 2

So far in the story we still do not know the narrorators name. In chapter 6 he takes a more general view instead of his own expeiriences. In chapter 7 he seems to be going crazy becasue he cannot remember much about what has happened and is going on. In chapter 8 the narrorator collects himslef and starts analyzing the events that are happening. The narrator points out the irony in that, on the brink of their collapse, the old habits of the social order are as strong as ever. The narrorator seems to be foreshadowing in the 9th chapter when he uses the color red to describe the red glow. This foreshadows the future bloodshed to happen. In the 10th chapter when the thrid cylinder falls the narroartor seems to be even more intruiged my the martians.

questions:

If you were the narrorator would you be interested in teh martians or would you stay away becasue of the danger?

The narrorator seems to represent order in the story, what does it mean when he starts to become crazy?

If I was the narrator I would be interested in the martians. However, after seeing the destruction that they cause, I would stay as far away as I could. The narrator describes the tripods as carrying heat rays, throwing people, and carrying pine trees. It would be foolish to get close to them as they would try to kill you. If you were interested in the martians, you would get more information by watching from a distance and hearing what other people say. It would be suicide to get close to the martians.

The narrator doesn’t seem to represent order in the story. He was just as excited and scared as the other people. The narrator seems to represent people in general more than anything. He showed excitement, fear, curiosity, and other feelings that people in general would show in a crisis. When he starts to become crazy, it is to show that the situation is progressing quickly. The martians land, setup tripods, and start raining down destruction upon England. Factor in his close encounter with the tripod and the dead landowner, and that would make most people need time to recover.

    1. I would be incredibly intrigued by the martians. The new discovery would draw my attention, and I would want to know more about them. On the other hand, I am a big coward. My fear of danger would keep me FAR away from them. I would allow braver people to do the snooping, and make sure that I was one of the first to hear the most up to date news. That way I would satisfy my curiosity while staying a safe distance away.

    2. I would have to agree with Collin when he says that the narrator does not represent order in anyway. I think that the narrator responds to the situation just like everyone else does in the area. First, he is very curious and explores the cylinder. Then, he sees what the aliens are really like and he is almost numb to the truth. Finally, after some time he understands how dangerous the aliens really are, when his own life is at risk. When he starts to become “crazy” he is just realizing how serious things are, and how they are just going to get worse.

Personally if I was the narrator I probably would be extremely interested in the martians. The reason why is because everyone somewhere has a primitive desire to display their dominance over others, one way or another. And with this extreme situation at hand where people were getting killed it would be an ideal situation to show off your “toughness” by not fearing the martians. Another reason why I would stay interested by the martians is probably the martians landing would have to be one of the biggest pieces of news in a long time, and if you were to know more about the situation then everyone would be envious of your gusto, and whether someone will admit it or not everyone feels he need to know more or be better than someone else.

To answer your second question I do not believe that the narrator is going “crazy”, I just think that because of the situation at hand and also counting that his friend Ogilvy had died he is probally in some kind of trauma. This could not be true but even if it isn’t he was bound to lose some of his senses when the martians landed. So he might be going only a little bit crazy, but he has a logical reason to be acting the way he is, even if he doesn’t go about doing these activities in the right way.

    1. If I were in his shoes I would probably follow for a while but once I discovered the danger I would probably leave the area and try to stay safe.

    2. I belive that things will go into chaos. Things will probably not make sense to us. Just like in the story when he starts to make sense of things, the war will be over and things will be at peace and order will be restored.

I am going to contradict what I said earlier a little bit. After reading what everyone has to say I realized that maybe the narrator is a LITTLE crazy. He has gone through a lot of trauma. He has the shock of aliens being on the planet for one thing, and even more the loss of his close friend. His emotions are probably going everywhere. In that type of situation (not like I’ve experienced aliens but…) you do feel a bit insane.
