Kody Bell, Peroid 3, The War of the Worlds, Post 2, Connector

I feel that the book can still be connected to the movie Independence Day.  In the movie the aliens are destroying cities everywhere.  In the book the same thing is happening.  Oddly enough in both the book and the movie they use Heat Rays.  However, in the movie the aliens were in aircraft hovering over the ground, while in the book the martians were on the ground.  The Heat Rays were also different but they still destroy everything in site.  There is one big difference between the two though.  In Independence Day the airships had shields that stopped anything from damaging them, but in The War of the Worlds if the robots get hit with any kind of gun round it can do damage.  But if you miss your target your dead.

I have one question-What do you think the military would do if martians did attack earth, and they had both the airships AND the robots?

I think that we would be in trouble. When the martians came by air, we would use the airforce. When they attack by land we would use our army. Thats why we have them. We wouldn’t do anything different than what the people in the book are doing. The only different thing may be that NASA would probably help out with some things. NASA would help with the air war, just like the movie.

I don’t think that your question makes a lot of sense.

I agree with Abbey, this question doesn’t make any sense. But if Martians did invade, then yes, the air force would fight in the air and attack the ships while the military, navy, and army would fight by land and water and take on the robots. NASA would probably have they’re scientists work on some way of combating the aliens and send some people to space to help the air force.

The only thing that War of the Worlds and the movie Independence Day have in common is an alien invasion. This is also the basis for many other science fiction works as well. To make a connection to that particular movie you would have to look deeper than just how the aliens attack and what they attack with. A good way would be to analyze how people react to the aliens in both things.
In Independence Day and War of the Worlds the people all have similar thoughts and reactions; they are very scared, but even more curious. When the aliens become hostile the military takes action. Another good question to ask would be what is life like for humanity after the invasion. Since we have not read that far yet, however, we cannot answer that question.

But to answer your question, Kody, i think we would just be screwed.

Kody: First of all, this connection has been made. Be original. Second of all, you’re question isn’t all that relevant, nor does t really expand on the connection. It doesn’t give your group much to work with!
