The Bean Trees- Period 1, Illuminator
The passage I chose from the first 4 chapters is on pages 23-24. This is when Taylor first recieves the child from the mystery woman at the bar. I chose this passage because she left her hometown to not have a child but now, here she is, with a child even though it is not her own. So, she will now have to be more responsible since recieving the child.
Do teenagers have enough responsibility to take care of a child on their own? Explain why or why not.

I think depending on how that person was raised and the suroundings of their childhood determines if they could be a decent single parent as a teenager.
For example if a person was brought up by parents that were alcoholic or drug addicts and were beaten as they grew up, would probably not make a good parent for a child, especially as a teenager.
In this case with Taylor I believe she was brought up fairly well, she stayed out of trouble, she finshed school, she had a steady job all in her hometown. She left to avoid having a child, but ended up with one anyway. With Taylor she knows well enogh that she could take care of the child once she gets a job becasue she is a smart girl.

I agree with Kortney. Some teenagers were raised to be good parent figures because some teenagers have to take care of their little siblings. But, on the other hand, you have some teens who are completely out of hand and unfit to make even half decent parents. It all depends on how that specific teenager was raised and also how responsible and mature they are. Taylor appears to be a pretty responsible teenager and she seems to be doing the best that she can possibly do in the situation that she is in.

I agree with both of you that it does depend on what situation a teenager was raised. But, there are probably some teenagers who live in harsh conditions and are forced to be responsible because of these conditions. Whether it is because they have siblings or are trying to make it in the world.
I also agree that Taylor sounds responsible and I think she will do well with taking care of the child along with herself. She seems to have the ambition and sounds very smart.

For some reason, the website won’t let me log in so this is my initial posting for this week for the group to comment on.
The passage I chose is on page 97. Taylor is talking to Lou Ann.
They were talking about Taylor and her little baby Turtle. Lou Ann kept asking Taylor questions about the baby and Taylor just had to tell her that she was just given to her. Lou Ann thought that that Taylor adopted her but Taylor told her that that’s not really what had happend.
My question is do you think that Taylor has any real motives of adopting Turtle or is she just going to keep taking care of her? Do you think that when Turtle gets older Taylor will tell her the truth about what had happend the night she was given to her?
Again, sorrry about the difficulties hopefully Mr. Shank can figure it all out.

Sarah L- Good question, though a bit limiting. Should have some follow ups ready.
In terms of responses, still would like to see more depth.
